Maam is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Hyunckel) of the manga/anime series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
She is the only daughter of Avan's two companions Roka and Leira and is raised in Nayla Village. She became Avan's second apprentice after Hyunckel at a young age. After she first meets Dai and becomes friend with him and Popp, she joins their journey to defeat the Dark Army and save the world.
In Japanese, she was voiced by Miina Tominaga in the 1991 anime and Mikako Komatsu in the 2020 anime. In English, she was voiced by Diana Kaarina in the 2020 anime.
Appearance[]
Maam is a pink-haired girl with dark brown eyes (light brown in the 2020 anime) and an athletic body. She first wears yellow clothes and pilot glasses. She later wears Priest clothes with red (pink in both anime adaptations) poncho over a black skintight shirt and leaves her thighs bare, a head circlet, red (pink in the 2020 anime) gloves and boots. After becoming a Martial Artist, she wears a Martial Artist strongsam with bare thighs (black tights in the 2020 anime) that often reveals her white or blue underwears, a shoulder pad with the "武" character, fingerless gloves, armlets and boots. For the final battle, Lon Beruk gives her a gauntlet that can change into an armor and "metal fist" knuckles.
Personality[]
Maam is strong-willed and courageous with a strong sense of justice, as well as loyal and maternal. She is very caring and loves others yet is ironically unaware of others' feelings for her and yet to understand them well. When Popp tells her his true feelings, she states that she will need time to proceed it. Her caring nature also helps redeeming Crocodine and Hyunckel, the latter of whom is on this path already and views her as a motherly figure. However, she doesn't tolerate perverted antics towards her, repeatedly beating Popp for them regardless if they're intentional as a running gag of the series. That said, she still cares about him, and upon reuniting with her friends again and learning that Popp died once when fighting Baran, she shows her worry and aggressively scolds him.
Maam is rather insecure about herself, unaware of how attractive she truly is and believing that she's weaker than her friends and will only hold them back, especially with the loss of her Magic Bullet Gun, so she decides to leave to train herself to be stronger. When she reunites with her friends, they are impressed by her newly acquired skills.
Biography[]
Maam was born to a couple of Avan's companions Roka and Leira, but sadly her father Roka has already died before the events of the series. She was raised by her mother at Nayla Village. When she was young, she became another student of Avan after Hyunckel and cannot be able to cast any attack spells, which she was given a Magic Bullet Gun to help her with that during her graduation.
When Dai and Popp are lost in the Dark Forest after they arrived at Romos Kingdom, Maam arrived and saved them both from the monsters. Unlike Dai, Popp ungratefully argues and pick a fight with Maam because he sees her as nothing but a "stuck-up girl" before he drags Dai away from her and Mina, unknowingly leaving Gomechan under their care. While Dai is fighting against Crocodine, Maam meets Popp again and saved him from the Infanticore. But when she realized that he just left Dai to fight alone with Crocodine, she becomes angry at Popp before they return to help him. To help Dai get back up, she used the Magic Bullet Gun to shoot a bullet with a Tingle spell inside to free him from being paralyzed, allowed him to defeat Crocodine. The next morning, Dai and Popp were agreed to stay at the Nayla Village for a while where Maam discovers her mentor Avan's death after overhearing Dai and the Elder Village's conversation. Despite the loss of her mentor, she decide to join with Dai and Popp on their journey to follow Avan's legacy.
When the trio got to the Romos Kingdom, Dai, Popp and Maam were forced to stay at the inn for the night after they weren't permitted to enter the castle due to recent monster attacks. The next morning, the trio discover that Crocodine has led the attack on Romos Kingdom, so Dai rushed off to stop him without hesitant. Maam wants to go help Dai, but Popp initially stays behind until he was encouraged by Masopho. After she reached to the castle, Maam tried to help Dai until she was beaten along with the others after Crocodine unleashed Beast King Anguish Blast at them. Luckily, Popp arrives with a little courage and risked himself of getting beaten by Crocodine which he managed to freeing Brass from Zaboera's brainwashing, allowing Dai to finally defeat the Beast King. The trio were later hailed as heroes.
Dai and his friends arrived at the Papnica Kingdom where they discovered the Dark Army has attacked the kingdom and meets Hyunckel for the first time after he seemingly saved them from the skeletons. Impressed, Dai and Maam tried to offer him to join with them in their quest to defeat the Dark Army, but Hyunckel refused and instead attacks them, while revealing himself of the Undead Legion Commander of the Dark Army and how he began his grudge against Avan. While Crocodine went to save Dai and Popp from getting killed, Maam ended up getting kidnapped by Hyunckel and is taken to Underground Palace where she was imprisoned. When she was visited by Hyunckel, Maam felt sorry for his loss and tried to convince him to change his ways, but only for Hyunckel to shut her down by striking her in the face before leaving. With the help of Gome, she managed to escape from her cell and they found the Soul Shell at the hidden room, which she later used it to reveal to Hyunckel the truth about his foster father's death. After Dai finally defeated Hyunckel, Maam later forgives him for his actions which led him to redeem himself by helping the trio to escape from being burned in the lava.
After Maam mourning over Hyunckel's supposed death after his sacrifice, Dai and his friends return back to Papnica Kingdom where they're searching for the signal flares but found the warehouse blocked by the rubbles. Dai then unleashed Fire Earth Slash to destroy the rubble for him and his friends to get inside, but only for him to accidentally exploded all of the signal flares which gotten Lady Amy's attention who took them all to see Leona at Valge Island. After they reached to Valge Tower, the heroes went to save and protect Princess Leona from Flazzard, before the Blizzblaze Commander activate Blizzblaze Curse Field to finish them all once and for all. After Flazzard froze Leona to prevent them from escaping, Maam knocks Dai out unconcious so help him escape with them. The heroes were later being chased by Dancing Flame Army until Matoriv saved them and taken them to his cave.
Though Matoriv refused to help them at first, he later agreed to reconsider after being convinced by Dai, whom he noted his resemblance to Avan. Later that night, Dai and his friends were launched back to Valge Island to deactivate Flazzard's Blizzblaze Curse Field. Popp and Maam went to the Dark Ice Spire to destroy it, but only for them to be confronted by the Dark Lord Hadlar. After Hadlar mocked Avan's sacrifice and supposed death and rub it on their faces, Maam becomes enraged and tried to attack him but only to get knocked out. After both heroes are defeated, Hadlar attempt to threw Maam into the Dark Ice Spire to have her impaled but Hyunckel later destroyed it and saved Maam's life, much to Popp's chargin. After they escaped from Hadlar with the help of Hyunckel, Popp and Maam later reunite with Dai and were about to get back to the Valge Tower, but for Flazzard to ambushed them all until Hyunckel and Crocodine joins with them in fight. When Flazzard used Rock Bullet Shrapnel Detonation to attack the heroes, Maam becomes concerned about his well-being and asked if he could find something other than fighting, but only for Flazzard to shut her off. After Flazzard is finally defeated, Dai and his friends return to Valge Tower where they tried to unfreeze Leona but to no avail. This caused Maam had no choice but to sacrifice her only weapon she has by firing a Sizzle bullet that Dai has charged to freeing Leona from being frozen, but at the cost of her Magic Bullet Gun.
Later that night, everyone were celebrating over their victory back at the Papnica Kingdom. Maam and the others are horrified of witnessing Hyunckel attempt to give himself up to Princess Leona, but only for him to be given another chance. The next morning, Maam is decided that she will become a martial artist following the destruction of Magic Bullet Gun and return back to Romos Kingdom for training. After Popp brings her to the Dark Forest where they first met, he wished Maam a good luck since he couldn't bring himself to confess his love for her. Maam is trained under the teachings from Grand Master Brokeena the Holy Fist alongside her senior disciple Chiu. After finished her training, she and Chiu are ready to participate for the Romos Martial Arts Tournament.
During the Romos Martial Arts Tournament, she reunited with both Dai and Popp where she heard about what happened during their first encounter with Baran. Though she refused to help them get the Sword of Championships due to believing that Dai will use it to kill Baran, but only to changed her mind after Dai assured her that he'll use the weapon to prove his father wrong about humanity. After Chiu lost his match against Gomes, Maam continued fighting against her opponents. When she and the other seven warriors are chosen for the finals, they were trapped inside Zamza's Bioprison where they were subjected into the Dark Army's experiments for the Mystic Legion's Superior Beings Studies. While the others feeling hopeless of getting out of the Bioprison, Maam is the only one who never gives up due to desire of helping her friends. She later managed to free herself and the other warriors from the Bioprison by unleashing Warrior Master Style Secret Attack to destroy it. After helping Dai escape from inside Zamza, she went to fought against him and called him a trash which caused him to remember his father's cruelty on him. After Zamza is finally defeated, she and the others cannot help but sympathize him over his abuse from his father and mourning over his death as he fades away into dusts.
The trio of heroes were summoned by King of Romos at the castle where they discovered that Princess Leona is planning a world summit plan to fight against the Dark Army and thankfully greeted by other warriors, leaving Chiu alone with Brokeena. Now with Chiu joining with the group, they later return back to Papnica Kingdom where they reunited with Crocodine, Leona and Papnica Troika. They later went to Teran Kingdom to ask the king about the sword that's powerful than Sword of Championships before they went to visit the Lankirks Village where Popp's parents lived and later to Lon Beruk's cottage near the village. When Beruk refused to create a weapon for Dai at first, he later changed his mind after he heard about the Demon Dragon Blade and then eagerly accepts to create it for the Hero before both Dai and Popp brought him the Crown of Championships to him since it's made of Orichalcum.
While Dai waits for his sword finished to be made, Maam and the others return back to Papnica Kingdom to stop Mystvearn's rampage around here. While the heroes are fighting the Shadow Soldiers, Mystvearn later appears in front of them and attacks them with his Dark Puppetry Aura Decimation Field, causing Hyunckel to almost giving into the Dark Aura until Maam stops him out of fear of seeing him becoming evil again, this led Hyunckel to use the Light Aura against Myst which almost revealed his face. When Myst attempt to kill the heroes, Dai later arrived with his new sword and managed to stopped him from doing so. After Dai finally destroyed the Sovereign Rock Castle, Mystvearn became enraged of seeing this and attempt to unleash his Dark Aura to kill everyone else here but only to be stopped by Killvearn who reminded him not to reveal his true appearance without Vearn's permission. Kill then mocked the heroes before he and Myst leave, which lured an angry Popp into the Field of Death where he's almost killed right here.
After Dai's disappearance following his fight against Hadlar, Maam stops Chiu from trying to pick a fight with a depressed and remorseful Popp over this. However, Dai is later rescued from being trapped inside an iceberg by Popp, Crocodine and Chiu, and Maam and Gome were became overjoyed of seeing him safe and sound as they're reunited with him. The next morning, Maam was seen training at the Dark Forest before Popp meets up with her after his rough training of practicing his Medroa spell. After returning from her training, Maam and her friends are setting off to Carl Kingdom where they're having a meeting at the underground base and first met Nova. After Nova arrogantly left to Zababa to face against the Elite Royal Guards by himself, Maam and the others agreed that Nova should be needed his help. Maam and Crocodine later went to help Dai, Popp and Hyunckel fought against the Elite Royal Guards and they managed to defeat the guards despite their struggle. After the Elite Royal Guards are retreated under Hadlar's orders, Maam and the others went to treat those injured onces and she reprimands Nova for his pride. Later, Popp returns from rescuing Chiu and the monsters from the Field of Death while waiting for Hyunckel and Crocodine to return.
After learning that Vearn's location is from the his palace Great Citadel, Popp, Maam and Crocodine return back to the Field of Death where they fought against the Elite Royal Guards while Dai and Baran went to fought Hadlar. Following Hadlar's defeat at the hands of Baran, Mystvearn activates the Black Core implanted inside Hadlar under Vearn's permission which blew up the entire Field of Death, but the heroes managed to survive thanks to Crocodine with an exception of Baran who risked himself from containing the Black Core's explosion. When Mystvearn, Killvearn and the Dark King Vearn arrives to confront them, the heroes are ready to fight against Vearn but only for them to be overpowered and almost gotten killed. However, Gome, Popp and Maam were forced to escape with the help of Hadlar while Hyunckel and Crocodine stays behind to hold off Vearn's Calamitous Wall. While Gome, Popp and Maam were drowning in the ocean, they were horrified of witnessing Dai being taken away by Holy Mother Dragon.
As Gome, Popp and Maam are washed up at the shore, they were rescued by Chiu, Akhim and Nova and taken to the Forest Fort. Though both him and Maam lost their spirits following their defeat at the hands of Vearn, they were later encouraged by Queen Flora after she told her history with Avan. After Dai is revived and taken to the Forest Fort, Dai went missing that night while Maam and the others went out to look for him with Popp becomes the only one to found him. The next morning, Maam and the others were overjoyed of seeing Dai returns to the Forest Fort. While they're planning to get through Vearn Palace, Maam, Princess Leona, Merle and Queen Flora went to the Cave of Trials to obtain the Kaglimmer to get pass through the barrier. After the girls return back to the Forest Fort, Maam and his friends were given themselves a weapons from Lon Beruk and Baduck. When she discover that Amy has feelings for Hyunckel, she went to ask Popp for an advice and admits her feelings towards Hyunckel, but only for Popp to angrily vent out his frustrations towards her, though they later made it up by the next morning.
The next morning, the Disciples of Avan are waiting at the underground below the Loroi Valley where Hyunckel and Crocodine's attempted executions takes place. After Hyunckel managed to suppress the Dark Aura inside of him, Maam and her friends emerged from the underground before they do the ritual to cast Kaglimmer on Vearn Palace for them to invade. However, Popp is the only one whose insignia hasn't glow yet which he was about to give up despite his friends' attempt at encouraging him. After Merle took the hit from Zaboera's Venom Chain to protect Popp, Maam was surprised of hearing Popp's confession of his feelings towards him before his insignia starts to glow and completed the ritual which unleashed the Kaglimmer on Vearn Palace, allowing the disciples to infiltrate it. When they're about to face the Dark King Vearn, the disciples were forced to fight against Hadlar and the Elite Royal Guards, with Maam fought against Albinass. While fighting, Maam attempt to reasoned with her enemy since she knew how much she risked her life to protect Hadlar, but only to got herself attacked instead. Despite finally defeating her with her Warrior Master Style Secret Attack: Tiger Shatter Fist, Maam began to took pity of Albinass as she apologizes to her for not being able to settle things peacefully and agreed to take her place in witnessing Hadlar's last moments before she explodes.
She later reunite with Hyunckel where she was encouraged into helping Popp to fight against Sigma. After Popp finally defeated Sigma, Maam was surprised and flustered of him confessing his feelings to Maam. Popp was about to kiss her, but only for him to poke his nose for fun. Embarassed, she angrily beats him up in humiliation. When she and her friends later got to witness the final fight between Dai and Hadlar, Dai finally become victorious after defeating Hadlar. Killvearn then proceed to take advantage of this by activating his Kill-Trap to incinerate Dai and Hadlar to death before Popp went out to hold it off with his Crackle spell. When Leona and Hyunckel has nothing to help them escape, Maam is the only one who is desperate to get them out from Kill-Trap. However, Dai was able to escape from Kill-Trap, but the others are horrified that Popp decide to stays behind out of pity for Hadlar before Avan arrives to save them both. After Hadlar dies while disintegrating into dusts, Maam and her friends were tearfully overjoyed of seeing their mentors were alive.
Maam and her friends went up to the central palace until Avan joins with them after he deals with Killvearn who wants to get revenge on him. While Hyunckel is left behind to fight against the monsters, Maam and her friends reached to the main gates where Avan use the Secret Way of Purification by casting Click on it to open the gates. When they got inside the palace, the trio are having a picnic while Avan and Leona went off to deactivate all of the Kill Traps around the palace. The trio of heroes were later confronted by Mystvearn until Avan and Leona returns from deactivating all Kill Traps. When Avan is taken away by Killvearn, Mystvearn attempt to use this as an advantage to goad the trio of heroes into charging at him, but only to be stopped by Leona who encouraged them to move forward to fight for the Hero rather than relying on Avan. While Dai, Gome and Leona went forward to face Vearn, Popp and Maam went to fight against Myst which he threatens to kill them in front of Dai so he could kill him, until they're saved by Larhart in no time.
While Dai, Gome and Leona went to face Vearn, Popp, Maam and Larhart continued fighting against Mystvearn until Hyunckel, Crococodine, Brokeena, Chiu and Hym joins the fight as well. She became tearfully overjoyed of seeing Hyunckel alive and well. After Hym managed to defeat Mystvearn with his Light Aura, he was about to unveil his Shadow Raiment, but Crocodine warned the heroes about what happened if someone unveiled it. After hearing Dai seemingly finish off Vearn, Maam convinced her friends to leave Mystvearn be because it'll be meaningless if Dai loses to Vearn since there's no need to, much to Popp and Hym's chargin. However, Myst desperately have no choice but to unveil his true appearance to the heroes in order to use his full power against them all, but Brokeena reveals to others that the secret behind Myst's immortality was the Secret Spell of Frozen Time before challenging him for a fight. She was surprised to discover that she was indeed the daughter of Avan's two companions Roka and Leira, which she moved by tears. While they're still fighting, Mystvearn held Brokeena hostage as a meat shield before Popp could fire Medroa at him. Popp then quickly teleport towards Brokeena so they could escape, but only got themselves killed by his own Medroa after Mystvearn deflected it towards them, much to everyone's horror of witnessing it.
However, "Killvearn" appears and asked Mystvearn to tell him more about his secrets, which earned the latter's suspicions and revealed him to be Avan in disguise, who escaped from getting killed by the actual Killvearn. After Avan reveals Mystvearn's secret, Myst had no other choice but to admit this to be true before giving back Vearn's old body back to him, revealing his true form to the heroes. Enraged, Maam furiously attempt to attack the mass of Dark Aura with her fist, but only for him to possess her body and used it to attack her own friends until she was freed by Avan with an Air Strike. After she regained her conciousness, she was surprised to see Popp and Brokeena survived from getting killed, causing her to angrily beating the former up in a brutal manner.
When Maam and the others are joining in Dai's fight against Vearn, they were getting trapped inside Eye Jewels by Vearn and couldn't do anything but to watch as Vearn finally gain the upperhand on Dai and Popp and attempt to destroy the entire Surface World. With Leona's wishes come true because of Gomechan, Maam and the others who were trapped inside Eye Jewels were able to move freely by themselves and attack Vearn to stop him from destroying the Surface World. Following Gomechan's destruction and Dai's wishing for everyone's hearts to be united, Maam and the others were later released from being imprisoned inside Eye Jewels and were sent down into the Heart of Vearn Palace. The heroes tried many times to escape but to no avail, but Popp reveals that the Grand Cross is the only thing that could get them out of here. When Hyunckel volunteers to do so out of concern for Avan, Maam doesn't wanted him into doing it until Hym did unleashed it which almost gotten himself killed, but everyone managed to escape thanks to him. The heroes are later reunited with their allies and waiting for Dai to come back to the Surface World once Vearn is defeated.
Following Vearn's death at the hands of Dai, Maam and the others are witnessing him falling from the sky until Popp went to catch him. Hearing about what happened to Vearn, everyone were celebrating over their victory against the Dark King. Flora reminded Leona to keep Dai out of sight because she doesn't want him to end up like Avan who disappeared following his last battle with Avan, humiliating him in front of his disciples as result. Once they're about to go home, Killvearn appears in front of them to mockingly congratulates them of their victory. He later reveals his true identity to them, was "Piroro" who is the true mastermind behind the puppet's actions, and later activating the Black Core inside the puppet's head to destroy the entire Surface World, along with the six other ones set up by Vearn. When Dai and Popp drags the puppet's body into the sky to prevent the explosion, Maam went forward and succeed in killing Killvearn. Dai later sacrificed himself into getting involved in the puppet's explosion, much to Maam and the others' horror of seeing it.
Following Dai's sacrifice, she and the others were searching for him for weeks, but couldn't find him anywhere. While mourning for him as they stared at the Sword of Dai, Maam thanking Dai for saving the world and changing everyone's lives. They later became surprised of realized that Dai may have come back since he's still alive. The epilogue shows her, Popp and Merle are going on adventure together.
Powers and Abilities[]
Being the daughter of Roka the Warrior and Leira the Priest, Maam inherits abilities from both of them. She is a priestess that is skilled in healing and supportive spells, and has learned to fight in close quarter combat that her weapon of choice is a Polehammer. With the Magic Bullet Gun given by Avan, Maam's offensive abilities are boosted, as the gun uses metallic cylinders as a power source rather than bullets themselves, and they can by infused with seemingly every type of spells which are then passed onto the gun and fired upon pressing the trigger. However, charging more than one spell in a bullet can cause a severe overload that can destroy the gun, which ultimately happens when Dai charges a Sizzle spell on a bullet to free Leona from her icy prison. Additionally, the gun's loss ends up derive much of Maam's fighting ability. However, she takes advantage of her own physical strength inherited from her father to train under Brokeena to become a Martial Artist.
With her training, Maam becomes a skilled fighter capable of taking down even men that are bigger than her, so much so that even Brokeena is impressed that she can master in days what many martial artists can only do in years. She is even able to fight Zamza in his Superior Being form, though he might already have his stamina drained beforehand. The greatest technique Maam has learned under Brokeena is the Refractor Fist, which combines healing magic and martial arts to boost the healing power to the point that it reaches the level of Overheal, allowing her to imbue her fists with healing magic to deliver fatal blows that destroy the enemies from the inside. The Refractor Fist's properties also allows Maam to bypass most conventional defenses like Zamza's Bioprison which is resistant to physical blows and even normal offensive magic. It even nullifies Zamza's regenerative abilities, allowing her to permanently injure even nigh-immortal enemies.

- Maam's name means "mother", signifying that she is the mother figure of the party.
- Maam is author Riku Sanjo's favourite female character in the series.
- Maam got a vocation change once the series was renewed past what would become the Destiny Arc.
- Her Martial Artist outfit is available in the lobby shop corner of Jump Force for female avatar customization under the names: Gi Top (Female) 02, Gi Bottoms (Female) 01, Hand Gear (Female) 05, Shin Guard (Female) 01.
- When the 2020 anime first revealed that she would wear black tights in her Martial Artist outfit, it led to a Japanese outcry. Interestingly, she already wore them in the Malaysian version of the manga, known locally as Misteri Naga. In Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - Xross Blade, she has multiple cards with tights and one numbered 05-057 with bare legs.
