James "Mac" Mackreides is a major character in the action thriller 2018 film The Meg and its 2023 sequel Meg 2: The Trench.
He is portrayed by Cliff Curtis, who also portrayed Jonah Hobbs in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and Tonowari in Avatar: The Way of Water and its upcoming 2025 sequel.
Description []
In the film, he is the chief operating officer of the Mana One submarine station, led by the doctor Minway Zhang. We also learn that he is a good friend with Jonas Taylor.
History[]
The meg[]
Mac meets Jack Morris during the submarine expedition leaded by Lori, Toshi and The Wall. He seems stressed and is always moving. When the Meg attacks the submarine, Mac is shown to be the most worried and disturbed by the situation. As they lose the communication with other members, a meeting is quickly organized. Mac directly proposes to call Jonas Taylor to save the crew stuck in the marine pit. He argues with Dr. Heller who tells him Jonas left behind to of his men during his last rescue mission. Mac replies that Jonas was actually attacked and Zhang stop the conflict by deciding to contact Jonas. He and Mac goes in Thailand where Jonas is, and they manage to convince him to come with them because Lori was his ex-girlfriend. It seems Mac is the only one to believe Jonas and really trusts him.
Later, after the successful rescuing by Jonas (despite Toshi's death), everyone learns the Meg's existence altough it was supposed to be extinct. The shark then left traces of bites on the glass wall of the station and destroyed three boats. Jonas decides to go to the scene with the others to kill the Meg. Mac jokes with Jonas by telling him he can go in the water instead of him. The latter puts a tracker on the Meg and Mac with others congratulate him. With Suyin's help the crew kills the Meg but the real one appears kills The Wall, Zhang and Heller. The boat now overturned, Mac goes to a canoe and the survivors get onboard. He saddly listens Morris saying he is sorry for what happens to the crew's friends and leaves Mana One. However, the next morning, Mac learns on phone that Morris never called anyone for the Meg and gets upset by throwing away his papers. He hesitates to follow Jonas who says they have to finish it, but he has no choice. He, Jonas, Suyin and the others take a boat to the Sanya Bay (where the Meg will go to). He stays with Lori, D.J., Jaxx and Meying on the boat when Jonas and Suyin kill the Meg in the water. But Mac and the others are forced to jump off the boat after an helicopter crash on it. At the time of their victory, on another boat, Mac raises its glass the first for their survival and for the death of their loved ones.
