A demon taking the form of a woman who left this world under unfortunate circumstances, only to be reincarnated in hell. Unlike her beautiful, swallowtail butterfly-like appearance, this demon is particularly brutal, and her reputation is well known even amongst the denizens of Inferno.
~ A description of Madama Butterfly in Bayonetta 2.

Madama Butterfly, also known as the Mistress of Atrocity, is one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Rosa) of the Bayonetta series.

Once a human woman who suffered a tragic death, she was reincarnated in Inferno as the fearsome Madama Butterfly. Widely known and feared throughout the underworld for her ferocity and ruthlessness, Madama Butterfly struck a deal with an Umbra Witch known Bayonetta, supplying her with power and knowledge in exchange for the thrill of battle. Despite her dreaded reputation, Madama Butterfly grows fond of Bayonetta over time and the two treat each other like friends, in stark contrast to how manipulative and feral most of the other Infernal Demons are.

She is voiced by Nanako Mori.

Biography[]

Past[]

Very little is known about Madama Butterfly's past, other than the fact that she was once a human woman who died under "unfortunate circumstances", only to be reincarnated in her current form in Inferno. Over time, she developed a reputation for being one of the most fearsome demons in Inferno, gleefully butchering fellow spirits in excessively violent ways. She also has a longstanding rivalry with another Infernal Demon named Alraune, though the origin of their feud goes unexplained.

At some point, Madama Butterfly made a pact with an Umbra Witch named Cereza, offering her power and knowledge in exchange for the thrill of battle. Cereza would eventually become known as Bayonetta.
