Madason is the main protagonist of Dragon Quest V.

Appearance[]

Madason wears a purple turban with a white tunic underneath it and he holds an oaken staff. Similar to his father, Pankraz, he has long jet black hair and he wears a ponytail all the time.

Personality[]

Madason is stoic and shows a strong sense of dignity in his efforts. He is loyal to his relationships, be it his family or his friends, staying with Prince Harry for 10 long years they were forced into slavery while not once resenting the young prince for the events that had happened.

As a husband he is extremely faithful to his wife, wanting to keep her safe during his quest (even when, in Debora's case, she treats him more like a slave than a husband) going as far as dropping all his responsibilities to his kingdom to go rescue his wife after she was abducted by Kon the Knight despite being advised not to do so alone.

As a father, Madason is protective of his children and has a deep bond with them; interestingly enough, their journey mirrors the one Madason himself took with his own father years before. He is said to be a righteous king, ruling fairly and well loved by his people.

Story[]

Madason is aboard a ship, waking up from a dream where he is born to royalty, though his father, simply dismisses it as just a dream. Upon arriving at the harbor Madason and Pankraz meet the owner of the ship, Rodrigo Briscoletti, and his two daughters, Nera Briscoletti and Debora Briscoletti. They make their way to the village of Whealbrook, where they stay with Sancho, the loyal servant of Pankraz. Bianca Whitaker and her mother are in town to find medicine for her sick father. While the adults chat, Bianca brings Madason upstairs and tells him a story, in which she took care of Madason when he was an infant. Bianca's mother calls her downstairs since they need to get the medicine but the man sent to get the medicine is missing inside the cave. Madason ventures to the cave and successfully rescues the herbalist from a rock. The next day, Pankraz and Madason bring Bianca and her mother back home to Roundbeck.

Arriving at Roundbeck, Bianca tours Madason around the town, where they encounter two kids bullying a sabercub. Bianca tries to stand up for the bullied cub but the bullies won't relent unless they can prove their bravery by defeating the ghosts in the Uptaten Towers at night. The duo accept the challenge, since Pankraz accepted Mrs. Withtaker's invitation to stay for the night at the inn, and so during the night, they sneak out of town and make their way into the tower. Upon entering the tower, the Countess tells the two to remove the evil monsters in the tower so that the ghost residents can rest peacefully. The two successfully expel the monsters in the tower, so the Count and the Countess bestow the duo a Golden Orb.

Returning to the town, word spreads that Madason and Bianca alone were able to drive away the monsters from the towers despite their young age. The bullies surrender the Sabercat cub to them, which Bianca names it for Madason and gives it to him because her parents wouldn't allow her to keep it. Pankraz has recovered from the cold he had caught from Whitey and so, the two of them are going to return to Whealbrook, but not before Bianca can say her goodbyes to Madason and asks him to take her on another adventure when they meet again.

When Madason and Pankraz arrive in town, people seem to be talking about a stranger who has arrived. The stranger looks like Madason only older, when he approaches the young Madason he asks him to look at his Golden Orb and after doing so, he instructs Madason to take care of his father. The strange events happening is actually because while it's actually spring, it's still as cold as winter. Madason eventually discovers the culprit is a Faerie named Honey, who is trying to get the others' attention but is unable to do so since no one can see her. She visited Madason's world because she is looking for someone who can help save Faerie Lea, the home of the Faeries. She takes Madason to her world to meet the Faerie ruler, Treacle, who asks him to recover their most precious artifact, the Herald of Spring, a flute that can summon the spring.

After Madason defeats the thief of the Herald of Spring, he returns to Treacle who uses it to bring the spring to his world. Treacle promises him that when he's older, he can return to the Faerie Lea and she will grant him any favor he needs and after saying his goodbye to Honey he is brought back to his home in Whealbrook.

Upon returning, Sancho tells him that his father was called to Coburg by the king so Madason decides to follow him. The two then arrive in the castle and Madason is given the chance to go explore and meet the prince, Harry. Harry, however, is a spoiled brat ordering Madason around and acting superior towards him due to his high status. Unfortunately, a group of thugs kidnaps Harry, leaving behind Madason. Pankraz soon follows after chasing the thugs to rescue him with Madason in tow. Upon arriving to the dungeon where Harry was taken, they discover that a child kidnapping ring, where all the members of noble houses are being taken away by Grandmaster Nimzo's minions as to prevent the coming of the Legendary Hero. After rescuing Harry, he once again displays his arrogance and smugness, only to be hit by Pankraz, who teaches him that his demeanor is wrong and that he will only end up pushing everyone away if he remains this way, words that Harry takes to heart.

However, while they exit the dungeon, Ladja, Grandmaster Nimzo's top servant arrives and prevents them from escaping. Ladja easily defeats Madason and Harry along with the Sabercat cub. Pankraz arrives and easily defeats Ladja's underlings. Unfortunately, Ladja holds the unconscious Madason hostage and threatens to kill him should Pankraz not put his weapon down, so he complies. Ladja takes advantage of this and orders his minions to attack him mercilessly, beating him down to his knees. With his last breath and strength, Pankraz reaches the unconscious Madason and tells him that his mother is still alive somewhere out there and that to find her, he needs to obtain the Zenithian Equipment and the Legendary Hero to rescue her. Ladja then heartlessly casts a Kaboom spell, completely decimating Pankraz, killing him. Afterward, Ladja takes the golden orb from Madason and smashes it to pieces.

After Pankraz's death, Madason and Harry are sold into slavery and are forced to build a temple for the Order of Zugzwag, a cult that worships Grandmaster Nimzo, where they remain for 10 long years. One day, Madason and Harry witness a woman being whipped mercilessly for getting one of the slave driver's shoes dirty. They fight the slave drivers to protect the girl, and are subsequently, thrown in jail. Moments later, a guard, Joshua, opens their cell and quietly tells them to follow him; he is the brother of Maria, the girl the duo saved earlier. Joshua lets them escape by placing them in a barrel as long as they take Maria with them. After they drift in the sea, the barrel washes ashore at the Abbey of the Aboveall, where the party finds a chance to rest. Madason wakes after sleeping for five days in the barrel, alongside Harry and Maria; Maria is accepted into the order. Madason prepares to explore the world to find his mother, in which Harry follows him as he has no direction in life anymore.

Madason and Harry arrive in the town of Fortuna, where they are approached by a fortune teller who tells Madason that the woman he is looking for (his mother) is still alive and that he has to head north. They arrive in the ruins of Whealbrook, which has been devastated in the 10 years of Madason's absence. They enter the nearby cave and they discover the Zenithian Sword, left there by Pankraz years ago along with a letter, pleading him to search for the Legendary Hero and the Zenithian Equipment so that he can save his mother, revealing that she has strange powers that are coveted by the forces of Nadiria and is most likely the reason why she was taken from them. Madason himself tries to use the sword, but it drains him of any strength he has, proving he is not the Legendary Hero.

The party then travels to Roundbeck, only to discover that Bianca's family no longer owns the inn. Things worsen in Coburg after Harry went missing, his half brother took up the throne after his father passed away and the queen has been running the town into the ground. Therefore, Harry pleads to Madason to return to Coburg to try and sort things out. Arriving in town, the group learns that Queen Dowager has been hiring shady mercenaries to serve as the army, increasing taxes to pay for them while making the population suffer while King Wilbur, who is Harry's half brother is nothing more than a puppet. Infiltrating the castle through a hidden passage, the group finds the queen imprisoned and after meeting with Wilbur they are tasked to find a magic mirror that can show the true form of whoever it reflects. So they depart to find the item locked away in a tower. Enlisting Maria for help, they are able to enter the tower to obtain the Mirror of Ra and bring it to the castle to discover that that queen is actually a monster in disguise. After slaying the monster, Harry stays behind and help Wilbur rule the land fairly, saying his goodbyes to Madason after 10 years and advises him to take a ship towards Littlehaven to continue his journey to find his mother.

Arriving in Littlehaven, Madason visits a pub where he witnesses a farmer from a neighboring village being harassed by thugs and battles them to defend him. After doing so, the villager explains that he came to town to find someone that can help his village get rid of a monster that is terrorizing it, so he enlists the help of Madason to accomplish said feat. Madason arrives at the cave where the beast lives, in which he battles the beast only to realize that it's the same Sabercat he and Bianca rescued from the bullies years ago. Using the ribbon Bianca gave Madason, the Sabercat remembers the scent and rejoins Madason; it gives Madason Pankraz's sword that he kept all these years. Returning to the village of Hay, Madason is accused of being friends with the beast and is kicked out of the village.

The party arrives in Zoomingdale and after helping the local professor, Madason learns the Zoom spell. Madason uses his new spell to teleport to Coburg and learns that Harry and Maria are now married and, after a tender moment with Harry, Wilbur notifies Madason that they were able to discover the Zenithian Shield; it is in Mostroferatto, under the ownership of Mr. Briscoletti. Madason arrives in Mostroferatto where he stops a runaway dog belonging to Nera Briscoletti who, unbeknownst to both of them, have met before when they were both children. When he arrives at the Briscoletti manor he finds that the young men in town are there as well, summoned by Mr. Briscoletti; he is looking for a groom for his daughter Nera. The older daughter, Debora, comes downstairs, only to be brushed away by her father. Mr. Briscoletti tells that he will give the Zenithian shield to the man who will marry Nera but to do so, the suitor has to present him with the rings of fire and water which are located in their respective caves. Nera tries to dissuade the suitors from such a dangerous mission but is taken away by her father regardless.

Madason ventures inside a volcano and, after battling the monsters protecting the Ring of Fire, retrieves the ring. Returning to town, Mr. Briscoletti tells Madason that the Ring of Water is inside a waterfall cave so he lends Madason his ship so that he can sail towards the waterfall, only to be stopped by a closed gate. Landing close to the village of Stockenbarrel, Madason looks for a way to open the gate to resume his journey. After searching for a way he encounters Whitey and is then reunited with Bianca after 10 years. Madason tells her of his quest to find the Ring of Water to be able to marry Nera, so Bianca agrees to help him by opening the gate but asks to come along with him to fulfill the promise he made to her to take her on an adventure when they meet again, to which Madason agrees.

Madason successfully obtains the Ring of Water, so Bianca accompanies him back to the manor where Mr. Briscoletti agrees to Madason marrying Nera, but she has some reservations upon seeing Bianca. Nera believes that Bianca has feelings for Madason and as such it wouldn't be right for her to marry Madason if it would mean that she would end up hating her forever. Madason has to ponder who he wants to marry and after visiting the bachelorettes in the night, including Debora, he has to make his choice in the morning. When morning comes, Madason is summoned to the manor and asked to make his decision, when suddenly Debora comes downstairs and commands Madason to chose her for his bride, which shocks her father. Madason is then given the choice between Bianca, Nera, or Debora. Whoever the players choose will not affect the outcome of the story, only different party conversations, so they are free to choose any of the three freely. Afterwards, the wedding ceremony takes place and in the morning Madason and his wife are taken to the manor once more, where Mr. Briscoletti gives him the Zenithian Shield and his boat so that he can continue his journey.

Mr. Briscoletti also suggests that Madason should visit the queendom of Helmunaptra where he can find the Zenithian Helm. Upon arriving to Helmunaptra, Madason and his wife meet Queen Cleohatra who takes them to the Zenithian Helm, only for her to realize that Madason is not the Legendary Hero, meaning she cannot part with the artifact. However, she reveals that she knows about the journey that Pankraz was experiencing and reveals to Madason that he is actually a prince from the far away land of Gotha and thus Madason sets out to find his lost home. Travelling through a mountain path, Madason and his wife eventually arrive to the town of Battenberg where his wife suddenly faints. This, however, is brushed off as exhaustion so Madason spends the night with his wife and in the next day the two make their way to Gotha once more passing through the mountain.

After a long trip, the couple finally arrives in Gotha where after 10 years, Madason meets Sancho again and they visit Albert, Madason's uncle and the current king. When the wife faints once more and after being treated by a doctor, it is revealed that she is pregnant. She decides to stay so she will be able to safely deliver the baby. Madason is then taken away from his wife for a bit when he is informed that to succeed to the throne, he has to undergo a ritual of passage as per the tradition of Gotha. Madason successfully completes the trial and so he returns home; his wife has given birth to twins in which Madason names them. Unfortunately, during Madason's coronation, his wife gets abducted, though the children are safe after his wife told the nanny to hide them from the abductors. Despite the objections of Sancho and Albert, Madason sets out to rescue his wife and is able to track her down but before doing so, he leaves behind the Zenithian Sword to keep it safe. Madason climbs the tower where she is being held and fights through hordes of monsters until he meets Kon the Knight, one of Ladja's minions that viciously assaulted Pankraz years before.

Madason defeats Kon with the help of his wife only then to be attacked by Grandbishop Ladja, who reveals they kidnapped his wife because she has Zenithian blood and will one day give birth to the Legendary Hero. Ladja turns them both to stone to prevent the Legendary Hero from being born, but unknown to him, the Legendary Hero is already born. They are then taken to an auction and Madason is sold as a statue, where he remains for 8 years. After 8 years have passed, Madason is discovered by Sancho and his own children, who restore him back to life. Madason is finally able to meet his children and they have a heartfelt reunion where he finds out that his son is able to equip the Zenithian Sword that he left behind all those years ago, meaning that he is the Legendary Hero his father was looking for all those years ago.

Madason takes his children to Coburg, to discover that Harry and Maria have a child named Kendrick, who resembles his father, as well as his old snobbish personality. This event parallels the ones that happened years ago with Madason and his father, with the father talking to the king while the child talks to the bratty prince. Afterwards Madason takes his children to the queendom of Helmunaptra and brings his son to queen Cleohatra where she relinquishes the Zenithian Helmet to him once she realizes that he is the Legendary Hero. The party also visits Mostroferatto and fend off an attack against an ancient powerful monster. Returning to their tracks, Madason takes his family to Lofty Peak, the birthplace of his mother to learn more about her. He is tasked with finding the ancient land of Zenithia that had disappeared a long time ago. After traversing into the old mine, the party finds a man stuck in the mine cart circuit, after releasing him he introduces himself as Dr. Agon, a scholar who is also searching for Zenithia.

With the man's help, the party reaches the underground ruins of the old city and they learn from him that to make the city float again they need another golden orb, the same golden orb that Ladja destroyed when he killed Pankraz. Madason remembers that when he was a child he was promised a favor from the Faeries so he sets out with his children to return to the Faerie Lea. Upon arriving to Faerie Lea, Madason and his family is greeted by Honey and after explaining to Treacle his situation she sadly tells him she cannot reproduce a full golden orb, only a golden bauble. Using the fairie's magic, Madason takes the golden bauble and enters through a painting, which leads him back to the past, to when he was still a child, revealing that the strange man he met when he was a kid, was actually his future self. After talking to his younger self, Madason switches the golden bauble for his young self's golden orb and after trying to talk his father out of going to Coburg and seeing him one last time, he returns to his own time with the artifact in hand.

Returning to Zenithia, Madason uses the golden orb to make the city float once more, but Dr. Agon needs one more item before everything is finished and asks Madason to venture into the Temple of the Dragon and retrieve the dragon, After Madason does so, Dr. Agon uses it to reveal that he is in fact the Zenithian Dragon, a being thousands years old who has lost its power and lived with humans until it could regain its power. Now with the ability to fly, Madason goes back to the Order of Zugzwag, the temple he and the other slaves were forced to build for 10 years. He finds the Zenithian Armor and dismantles the Order by slaying Slon the Rook, another one of Ladja's minions who helped kill Pankraz and King Korol, the leader of the order. After doing so, the party is contacted by Mada, his mother, begging him not to come to Nadiria and bestows them the ring of life. Using it, they are able to bring back Madason's wife, where the whole family finally reunites and she finally meets her children.

Despite Mada's warnings, the party enters Nadiria, the netherworld, where Mada appears to be a saint to the local villagers. After climbing through Mount Zugzwag, the group finally meets Mada for the first and final time as it turns out she was the one who is keeping Grandmaster Nimzo at bay. Her powers slowly weaken and after being assured that her son and his family are capable of stopping the fiend, she vanishes from the netherworld and passes away before being able to even hold her child one last time. Now determined on setting everything right, Madason pushes through and is able to finally destroy Ladja for everything he had done. Continuing through the mountain, they finally reach Grandmaster Nimzo and after an epic battle, they are able to finally put him down.

Madason and his family, after so many misfortunes, are able to return to Gotha where a huge celebration is being held in their honor. Pankraz and Mada watch from the beyond, proud of what their child and his family accomplished and disappear happy, knowing that the future that Madason fought so hard for is finally safe, forever.
