I'll finish what you started. The Paintress. Renoir. They will pay. I'll save them, Gustave. Emma, your apprentices, everyone. I'll save them. We could never tell if you were my brother or my father. But to me you were both. The best brother and father I've ever had. Thanks for being my family. See you... in the next life.
~ Maelle as she buries Gustave.
If you could grow old... Would you... find a reason to smile?
~ Maelle's final words to Verso in her A Life to Paint.

Maelle is the main protagonist in the 2025 French RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. She is a young swordswoman that serves as a member of Expedition 33. At the age of 16, she is notably the youngest member of the crew. Like the rest of her crew members, she seeks to defeat the Paintress, putting an end to the Gommage for good.

It is then revealed that she is in fact Alicia Dessendre, the youngest daughter of the Dessendre family, who had been reincarnated as Maelle upon entering the Canvas created by her late brother, Verso. Originally sent by her sister, Clea, to help their father pull their mother out of the Canvas, Alicia found herself growing attached to the friends and family she found in Lumière, hoping to spend the rest of her life in the Canvas.

She is voiced by Adeline Chetail in French and by Jennifer English in English.

Quotes[]

I know- I know what you're going to say. You want to offer your condolences. You want to say something comforting. But- I don't need it. I've had enough condolences. I- I've lost so many families now, I- I- I just need-
~ Maelle to Verso, as she grieves over Gustave's deeath.
You're not Verso, no. You look and sound just like him. But you're you. I'm still Maelle though.
~ Maelle with Verso, after regaining her memories of her past life.
Tomorrow comes.
~ Maelle as she leads her army in Lumière.
I know precisely what's at stake! You want control, you want to feel like you're doing something. You couldn't save Verso, so you want to save us. Except you're not. Destroying the Canvas won't help us move on, it'll just deny us the one place that helped us feel again.
~ Maelle telling off Renoir.
Don't do this. Don't leave me again.
~ Maelle as she slowly disappears from the Canvas in A Life to Love.
