Mai is a minor character in the 2024 Netflix adventure fantasy series Avatar: The Last Airbender, based on the Nickelodeon 2005-2008 animated series of the same name. She is a non-bender and the best friend of Azula and Ty Lee
Biogaphy[]
Season 1[]
Omashu[]
Mai tells Azula that Zuko is fortunate to be away from the FIre Nation and is actually allowed to stay away from home. When she states that Zuko is technically next in line for the throne, Azula sends her a glare. Mai quickly adds that Zuko doesn't deserve to be.
Spirited Away[]
When Azula starts beating down a prisoner of war, Mai quickly intervened and grabbed her friend's hand, where Azula's fire briefly turns blue. Azula is now angry at her for intervening. However, both Mai and Ty Lee realize that Azula could of killed him. As Ty Lee assures Azula that Azula is already perfect, the princess mutters that it is still not good enough.
Later that night, Mai and Ty Lee both fall asleep as Azula keeps pushing herself to work better.
The North[]
Mai and Ty Lee watch again how Azula defeats one of the prisoners, with her father supervising her training. However, they assure her once again she is the best.
Later, Mai and Ty Lee watch with smiles as Azula stand up to her father when she produces a lightning bolt
Personality[]
Like her animated counterpart, Mai is stoic and mostly poised. She too is bored with her life in the Fire Nation and considers Zuko to be lucky because he is out there exploring the world and not stuck int he Fire Nation.
However, she and Ty Lee share a genuine friendship with Princess Azula instead of being loyal to her without fear. Despite being stoic most of the time, when Mai sees Azula taking things to far, she will intervene, as she quickly grabbed her friend's fist before Azula could kill a prisoner during one of her training sessions.

- Sai: Mai possesses a knife, which appears to be her primary choice of weapon. While watching Azula train, Mai is seen toying with her knife,

- When Mai sees Azula taking things too far with training, she often stops her something her animated counterpart would never have done.
- In the fifth episode of the first season, she quickly stops Azula when Mai sees her fire turning blue.
- Unlike the original series, Mai appears in the first season when she didn't debut until the second season episode "Return to Omashu."
- In the cartoon series, Mai was best friends with Ty Lee and Azula as children. She was also in a relationship with Prince Zuko, who she had a crush on since childhood. In the third season, Mai and Ty Lee redeem themselves and end up betraying Azula
- Mai is seen twirling a sai while watching Azula fight, a likely reference to her animated counterpart being proficient with a knife.
