Mai Shiranui is a heroine from both the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series of fighting games. Andy Bogard is her self-proclaimed fiancé. The relationship between the two is often unclear and subliminal, usually on Andy's part, who at times seems to suppress his feelings for her in favor of treating her like a little sister. Since her first appearance in Fatal Fury 2, she has been converted and recognized as the main sex symbol of SNK.
She was originally not planned to be included in Fatal Fury at all, as her fighting style was created for a different male ninja. When developers shifted their focus to including an idol character into the series, they decided to scrap the Shiranui man for Mai. Her characteristic "bounce" was loosely modified from a kunoichi (female ninja) method of assassination: to be sensual to their unassuming prey before they strike. According to an issue of Neo Geo Freak, her breasts were modeled after Fumie Hosokawa and her bottom is modeled after Ai Iijima; both women were famous idols at the time.
Mai was rated #4 in GameSpy.com's "Top Ten Babes in Games" feature and #5 in Game Informer's "Top Ten Hottest Girls of the 16-Bit era." In the character popularity poll on Neo Geo Freak's website, she was voted as the fifth favorite character with a total of 2,380 votes. Along with the many figures and merchandise that have been made in her image, she has made an outside game appearance in the spin off series Queens Gate.
History
Fatal Fury
Mai Shiranui, being the only Shiranui that remains alive, is the legitimate heir of the clan and its ancestral arts of Ninjutsu. From an early age she learned by her grandfather, Hanzo Shiranui, the secrets of Ninjutsu and learned to develop and use with great efficiency and precision the exceptional ability to control the fire known as pyrokinesis, becoming an expert in hiding her presence by completely silencing his steps.
Over the years, Mai became a very beautiful young woman, and for this she received marriage proposals from dozens of men. It was in this facet of his training, when he meets Andy Bogard, a very handsome and handsome young man who had come to train with Mai's grandfather. Immediately Mai was madly in love with him. The King of Fighters
After the previous events an international tournament is announced, the tournament is called The King of Fighters, for that tournament letters of invitation are sent to the best fighters in the world, Mai of course receives her invitation, the rules are very simple, it is required Participating in teams of three, Mai knowing that Andy had also received invitation did not hesitate to propose that they participate together, but Andy had already teamed up with his brother Terry and his friend Joe Higashi in advance. Mai promises that she also participated to be at his side, then meets Yuri Sakazaki, who finds a teammate as well as an inseparable friend, they join King, a Kickboxing fighter.
Unfortunately for Mai and her company, in the KOF'96 tournament, Yuri was forced by her father to take her place in the Kyokugenryu Team, so Mai and King urgently needed a new third member. Without hope and with time over Mai decided to go to her room at the hotel where she was staying when she noticed tears running down her cheeks when she realized how much it meant for her to compete with her friends in the tournament. The next morning Mai had packed all her things and was about to go to the airport to return home, when she opened the hotel door she was suddenly attacked by an unknown woman, but Mai deftly evaded the attack and was about to attack, when a voice shouted "It's enough!", it was King who had found the third participant, the woman introduced herself as Kasumi Todoh and apologized to Mai and praised her skills, saying she needed to check the skills of her future teammate . So the "Female Team" was complete once more and ready for the tournament.
For the KOF'97 tournament, Mai was getting ready to participate with her friends King and Kasumi Todoh like the year before, but there was a problem, Kasumi had disappeared because she was looking for her father, Mai paid a visit to King to inform her of This, but received a little encouraging news, King had decided not to participate in this tournament because he needed to take care of his younger brother Jean, apologizing to Mai for not being able to accompany her on this occasion. Chizuru then proposed a solution, offered to take care of King's brother so that both girls could participate in the tournament, not seeing any inconvenience the two decided to accept Chizuru's offer and thus participate once more.
KOF'99 tournament was announced, Mai finally fulfilled her dream of being able to team up with her beloved Andy since the new rules required a fourth member in each team, so the new Fatal Fury team was formed by Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi and the new member would be Mai. At the end of the tournament Terry disappeared in the ruins of Krizalid barracks, Andy was very worried about Terry not being able to find him anywhere, Mai tried to cheer him up at all times by telling him not to worry please because in the case of Terry he would surely be with life and well, but in case she wins, Mai pulls out a wedding dress, because Andy had promised to marry him if she joined his team.
Mai decided to form the Female Team once more for the next tournament of The King of Fighters 2000, Mai would meet again with her great friend Yuri Sakazaki after being separated for so long, Kasumi Todoh would join the team but they still needed a fourth member already King would participate this time with the Kyokogenryu Team, then a girl named Hinako Shijou who wanted to be part of the team appeared before the others, Mai decided to give it a try and asked her to face Yuri to check her skills, seeing that It turned out to be a talented girl Mai and her classmates decided to accept her as the final member.
In KOF 2001 tournament, Mai teamed once again with Hinako, King decided to return to her friend Mai's side and the fourth member was Li Xiangfei whom Mai met some time ago. Here concluded the second saga of KOF.
In KOF 2002 tournament, Mai participated alongside Yuri Sakazaki and the girl champion of Tae Kown Do and member of the team of the Korean Team (team of Korea), called May Lee, although this game is a dream match, a game without official history, but a compilation of several characters from the past sagas, to the delight of the fans.
In KOF 2003 tournament, Mai participated with her friends, this time including Blue Mary, a private investigator, since Andy no longer participated in that tournament for training to overcome his brother because he was frustrated by never having been able to beat him until now. After knowing about it, when seeing the retirement of Andy, Mai began to think about the reason of the estrangement of this one with her.
In KOF XI tournament, Mai decides not to participate anymore to find Andy and see what is really happening.
Later, Mai decides to enter the KOF XIII with her first KOF teammates, King and Yuri, as she felt that the KOF tournament isn't complete without her. She isn't upset at Andy while making her choice, content to enter a tournament with both her and him in it once more.
In KOF XIV, Mai makes her appearance in this new saga, where she will join the Women Fighters Team accompanied by King and the rookie Alice (the latter replacing Yuri, who joined the Art of Fighting team). According to the story published on the official site of the videogame, it is revealed that Mai, furious after not having been considered in the Fatal Fury team and once again being away from Andy, decides to enter the tournament to defeat that team and prove her worth as fighter.
Personality
Mai is a very happy girl with every girl's dream: get married with her prince charming. She found that same Prince Charming in Andy and self-proclaimed herself his fiancé. Although her preppy fighting persona suggests otherwise, Mai is actually a traditional and ideal Japanese beauty. However, her pride as a Shiranui ninja and infatuation with Andy usually keeps her from fitting the mold 100% of the time.
Powers
- Pyrokinesis: Mai is able to create and control fire. She cannot control flames she didn't create however and is not immune to other types of fire.
- Create Fire: Mai can create fire.
- Fire Attacks: Mai can infuse her attacks with fire. She can also completely cloak herself with her flames.
- Fire Channel: Mai can channel fire through her clothes, weapon and anything she touches.
- Fire Burst: Mai can cause explosions and eruptions of fire.
- Aerial Control: Mai has the ability to temporarily stay airborne and control her movements in the air. This allows her to float, glide, change directions in mid-air or gain temporary flight.
- Hidden weapons: Mai can hide/pull out infinite weapons and items from her clothing and cleavage, from seemingly nowhere as no space visible. She keeps at least one fan (her weapon of choice) with her that can't be seen. She also sometimes carries clothes, giant fans, and usually an umbrella.
- Bushin: Mai can temporarily project shadow images of herself and her weapon.
- Superhuman strength with her martial arts she is capable of throwing her opponents bigger than her and using her hand to hand combat skills.
- Clothes with her revealing outfit it's easy for her opponents to get distracted and gives her an advantage to attack.
Skills
- Changing: With only one gesture, Mai can change clothes within a second.
- Climbing: Due to her ninja training, Mai is an expert with climbing surfaces.
- Stealth: Also because of her training, Mai is a master of stealth.
Fighting Style
Mai uses the Shiranui-ryuu Ninjutsu. The style resembles normal ninjutsu with more graceful and majestic moves, somewhat in reference to traditional Japanese dance. She combines this style with her pyrokinetic abilities. Mai uses a lot of gestures while fighting as well.
She also uses paper fans as weapons, integrating them into her combat technique and using them to perform several combinations and moves. Her clothing, specifically, the 'tails' on her ninja garb are also used to attack the opponent.
