|“||I'm sorry, Great Deku Tree... I know you warned us many times, but still I did not listen...||„|
Makar is a supporting character in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. He is a resident at Forest Haven and plays a special role in the annual ceremonies that cause the Great Deku Tree to sprout seeds for the other Koroks to use to create new forests on various islands. He plays a violin (which gives the impression of a cello due to Makar's small size) which is important to the ceremonies. He and Linder have a terrible habit of being late for the ceremonies has a tendency to not listen to the Deku Tree's warnings about the Forbidden Woods which is adjacent to Forest Haven, due to several monsters taking residence there.
Makar lives in Forest Haven with the other Koroks and the Great Deku Tree. One day, Linder and Makar are flying together and the latter headed towards the Forbidden Woods and Linder tells him not to. Makar falls into the thorny island and Linder returns to Forest Haven. Link was meeting with the Koroks and the Great Deku Tree, who promised him Farore's Pearl once the ceremony closes, but Linder interrupts them and lets them know what happened. The Great Deku Tree tasks Link with finding Makar at the Forbidden Woods and bestows him the Deku Leaf to help him float and catch wind from the updrafts to get into the extremely dangerous territory. Link eventually finds Makar, but the latter is swallowed by Kalle Demos, beginning the battle. Link is able to defeat it and Makar is freed; the Korok thanks Link for saving him and when he learned that Link was given the mission to find him, Makar remembered the ceremony that he must attend and tells him to bring him back home. Link and Makar are teleported onto the Deku Tree's lily pad and expresses gratitude to Link. Makar tearfully apologized to the Deku Tree for not listening to him despite knowing the dangers. The Deku Tree reassures Makar that he is safe which is all that matters and proceeds to reward Link with Farore's Pearl as promised. He then tells Makar not to cry anymore and play his violin like he always did. Makar gets out his violin and commences the ceremony by playing it with the Koroks singing along. All Koroks, except Makar and Hollo, grab the seeds and bid them farewell as they left for the islands across the Great Sea.
Later on in the game, Link's mission is to restore the Master Sword's power (due to the fact that Laruto and Fado, the original Earth and Wind Sages are killed by Ganondorf's powerful monsters). After completing the Earth Temple with Medli, Link travels to Forest Haven where he enters a small cave hidden in a waterfall and uses the Grapling Hook to get inside. Makar was practicing for the next ceremony and is happy to see him again, and is surprised that Link can hear him playing his violin, since he thought the sounds of the waterfall would drown out his practice session and doesn't find it fun if everyone knows ahead of time of what song he will play and decides to play more quietly from now on. Link uses the Wind Waker to conduct the "Wind God's Aria", which caused Makar to fall into a trance and upon awakening, he realizes that he is the Wind Sage's successor and asks Link to escort him there. Once in the Wind Temple, the player can play as Makar where he can plant seeds that grow into trees that activate certain events and to fly; he is also needed to break down certain barriers by playing the "Wind God's Aria" to make progress. During their expedition, Makar is captured by the Floormasters and imprisoned in a cell that can't be easily opened. After Link acquires the Hookshot after defeating a stronger varient of a Wizzrobe, he returns to Makar's cell and uses the Hookshot while wearing the Iron Boots to pull down the statue, freeing Makar and they are able to continue their journey together. After Link defeats Molgera, Makar plays the "Wind God's Aria" to fully restore the Master Sword's power and remains in the boss room for the rest of the game to maintain the swords power. If Link revisits the boss room, Makar cannot be interacted with, nor does he acknowledge Link's presence at all.
After Link defeats Ganondorf with Princess Zelda (who is also Tetra) and returned to the world above, Makar is last seen on the pirate ship with Tetra's pirates, Prince Komali, Aryll, and Medli as they greeted Link and Tetra, who wave back at them. Both Makar and Medli have fully fulfilled their roles.
