Makoto Edamura is the main protagonist of the 2020 Netflix original anime television series Great Pretender and its manga adaptation of the same name.
The self-proclaimed greatest conman in Japan, Makoto initially led an honest life until the untimely death of his precious mother Miki Edamura. After being roped into a scheme by French international "confidence man" Laurent Thierry and his partner Abigail Jones, Edamura realized how small his world had been as he travelled the world conning crooks with his newfound crew.
As his profession entails, Makoto was cunning, manipulative, and resourceful while concocting and undergoing schemes. However, outside of his work, Edamura was naive and innocent, more befitting a man of his youthful age.
Makoto is voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi in the Japanese version of the show and by Alan Lee who also voiced Ren Amaki in The Rising of the Shield Hero, Ledo in Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet & Kohaku in Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon in the English version. In the English version, child actor Griffin Faulkner provided Edamura's voice during flashbacks where he was a young child.
- Edamura's name translates to 'truth person' in English. On one hand, the name is ironic due to his line of work. On the other hand, the name could reflect his kind-hearted personality.
- Makoto's favorite hobby is collecting capsule toy figures from vending machines.
