Biography

An American Tail

The year is 1885 in Shostka, Russia. Mama and her family are living peacefully in their home in the home of the Moskowitz family, but Mama is very temperamental about Papa when he mentions the "c" word, AKA "cat". As she feared, just after Papa tells Fievel and Tanya that in the United States of America, there are no cats and she shushes him, fearing "they" would hear him, "they", the Cossacks and their cats, arrive to lay waste to the village in one of their anti-Jewish pogroms. Though the Mousekewitz family escape, their home, and that of the Moskowitz family, is destroyed.

With the loss of their home, the family head to Hamburg, Germany to catch a ship to the United States. After Fievel wandered off to find some fish in a barrel, when he returns to tell Mama, she snaps back that it was a shame he did not find any cats, causing a momentary panic from the other mice passengers, before Papa leads them in singing, "There Are No Cats In America", moments before the ship sails into a nasty storm. As a result of the storm, Fievel is swept overboard and presumed drowned, and Mama and the rest of the family arrive in New York Harbor at Ellis Island with broken hearts to be processed through immigration.

After finding a place to set up their new home in NYC, along with a memorial to Fievel, the Mousekewitz family start to get used to their new life in America, but though Tanya believes Fievel might still be alive, Mama and Papa highly doubt it. However, they soon find that the rumors of America being cat-free are misplaced when they are attacked by the Mott Street Maulers, resulting in Mama sarcastically asking Papa about what he said earlier about no cats in America, to which he can only reply sheepishly about being wrong with believing there was no cats in America.

Some time later, Mama learns of the plan from Gussie Mouseheimer to build a secret weapon to deal with the Maulers once and for all, and travels to Chelsea Pier with Papa and Tanya to aid in the construction of it. They are later awoken when the Maulers arrive earlier than Gussie expected and the weapon is attempted to be launched prematurely, but is restrained until they hear the whistle from the boat bound for Hong Kong sound, being the true signal to launch the weapon, but because of the emergency restraining process, they are unable to launch it on time, until Fievel risks himself to release the weapon, knocking himself out on a metal nut when the ropes recoil backwards upon being severed. Mama helps drive the weapon, based on Papa's tales of the Giant Mouse of Minsk, after the Maulers until they are forced to abandon it as it chases the Maulers into the water. As Warren T. and his Maulers are picked up on the anchor of the ship and are on their way to Hong Kong, the mice celebrate, until leaking kerosene is ignited by the leftover fire from what Warren lit earlier to burn the mice out, setting the pier ablaze, forcing the mice to flee as the human FDNY arrive to fight it. During the evacuation, Tanya hears Tony Toponi and Bridget calling for Fievel. Remembering what happened with her being renamed at Immigration on Ellis Island, Tanya decides to seek them out as Papa and Mama follow her. They soon locate Tony and Bridget, but while Tanya and Papa talk to Tony, Bridget shows Mama Fievel's hat he was given by Papa as a Hanukkah gift back in Shostka, so when Papa is still unconvinced it is his Fievel they are looking for, Mama shows him Fievel's hat to confirm it is their son.

The next morning, the Mousekewitz family, aided by Gussie, Tony, Bridget, and Tiger, are looking for Fievel in Orphan's Alley, a place where many orphan mice have ended up after giving up hope of reuniting with their families. Only when Papa calls out to Fievel and Fievel, having just about given up hope on finding his family, hears him, and with his hope restored, goes looking for them and calls back, Papa has Gussie halt Tiger as he dismounts to find Fievel, and soon reunites with his son. Mama arrives shortly thereafter, overjoyed to see her son is alive, and both parents realize Tanya was right that she had faith Fievel was still alive and it proved true.

Some time later, Mama hangs on for dear life and she and Papa join Fievel and Tanya as Henri and his pigeons fly them to the Statue of Liberty. Though Papa wants Mama to see the statue, she only has one thing to say to him about their current condition:

Papa! When we land, I'll look!
~ Mama Mousekewitz

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West

Five years after the original movie, the Mousekewitz are still having a hard time living in NYC. Tanya's singing only angers their human neighbors, who throw fruits and vegetables down at them as their only means of nourishment since they don't have any cheese to eat. When their neighborhood is attacked by the Cactus Cat Gang under Cat R. Waul, the family escapes into the sewers, where they find a mouse puppet controlled by Waul mentioning a better life out west in Green River, Utah. After Papa agrees to buy tickets for the train ride there, the family packs to head out west.

At the station, Tanya is momentarily distracted by seeing an actor and a singer, but Mama snaps her out of it, scolding her over wanting to live her dream of becoming a big singer one day. On the train ride out to Green River, during one night, Fievel sneaks away to explore the train and discover Waul and his Cactus Cat Gang on board. After overhearing their plan for the mice once they get to Green River, Waul initially lets Fievel go, but sends his assistant, T.R. Chula, to throw Fievel off the train. Fievel's screams wake up Mama and the others, but they are too late to stop Fievel from falling off the train and being left stranded. As a result, the Mousekewitz family arrive in Green River with heavy hearts over losing Fievel again, but this time are confident he will find some way to make it to Green River to reunite with them.

After finding a place to stay near the water tower, only for Chula to block it up, Waul appears to offer a deal with the mice to coexist with his gang by helping him build his new saloon together, and the mice agree, including the Mousekewitz family. Later, as they are helping with the construction, they are reunited with Fievel, who made it safely to Green River, but when Fievel tries to warn them of Waul's real intentions, they are too lost in Waul's lies to believe him.

Later, when Mama, Papa, and Yasha are attending the ribbon cutting ceremony for Waul's saloon's grand opening, it is interrupted by Fievel, Tiger, and Wylie Burp. Only after Waul shoots Tiger with his revolver and deliberately blows his cover with killing the mice in the giant mousetrap disguised as grandstands for them by ordering his architect to cut the ribbon, Tanya, having overheard with Miss Kitty, rushes down to save her family and the other mice, forcing Waul to stop the cutting to avoid killing Tanya as well, buying time for Mama and the others to flee, even as an enraged Waul fires on them with his revolver until Fievel commandeers it with Wyile's help. After Tiger single-handedly takes down the Cactus Cat Gang, especially Chula for threatening Miss Kitty, Fievel shoots and cuts the ribbon, sending the Cactus Cat Gang high into the air. As everyone watches, Tiger, Miss Kitty, Wylie, and the Mousekewitz family, the gang soon land in the mailbag on the side of the train tracks, where a train snatches it up as it passes through, snapping the spigot on the water tower wide open, undoing Chula's sabotage from earlier, and the water causes many flowers to spring up as a result. As Fievel rejoins his family, Mama and Papa praise him for his heroism, before Papa leads everyone in a celebratory dance with his violin. Fievel then follows Wylie to a small butte overlooking the sunset, where Wylie hands Fievel his sheriff's badge and some final words of wisdom before the two of them watch the sunset together.
