The death of that baby kept me up at night. It still does. I should have taken a stand then, but Salen told me it kept her up at night, too. She promised to make changes to ensure that it never would happen again, and I believed her because I cared for her. A lot. But my eyes were closed, and I should have stepped up sooner. Because this place is my home, and you pains-in-the-ass are my family. Together, we can fix this woman's heart, her brain, and neck. We can do great things for all our patients... If we don't kill each other first.
~ Dr. Marcus Andrews acknoledging his own wrongdoings in remaining loyal to Salen due to his love for her clouding his judgement

Dr. Marcus Andrews is a major character of ABC's medical drama series The Good Doctor.

He was the Chief of Surgery of St. Bonaveture Hospital who was prejudiced against Shaun because of his autism, but eventually learned to get used to him and his abilities. He becomes the Hospital President after Dr. Aaron Glassman steps down and is succeeded in his former position by Dr. Jackson Han, who was later fired by Andrews in defense of Shaun, at the cost of getting himself fired as well, before being rehired as an attending surgeon by Han's successor Dr. Audrey Lim.

Sometime after Salen Morrison signed off Ethicure's ownership of the hospital, Andrews once again becomes the President. However, he decides to resign due to concerns from the hospital board over his second mandate, and is succeeded by Lim and Glassman as interim co-presidnets.

He is portrayed by Hill Harper.

Season 1[]

Andrews fights with Glassman over hiring Shaun Murphy as a surgical resident, even after Shaun saves a patient before even reaching the hospital. Glassman then proposes a deal: if Shaun does not live up to Andrews's expectations, then he would resign as President of the hospital, thus giving Andrews the position he wants. As the season goes on, he slowly starts to form a great deal of trust and belief in Shaun, shown in Shaun's very first day when Melendez refuses to let him parttake in a surgery and Andrews repeatedly insists that Shaun assist. Ironically and hypocritically, Andrews himself sees through Melendez constant verbal abuse of Shaun, while also still longing for the President promotion, still expecting Shaun to fail by giving him more responsibilities and exploit this for his own pride. Jared Kalu, a fellow surgical resident, who also distrusted Shaun but started warming up to him, gets fired for physically assaulting a doctor who tried to make unwanted sexual advances towards Dr. Claire Brown, his lover. Andrews refuses to rehire Jared, who in response sues the hospital for racism, a case he ends up winning, but causes him to lose Andrews and Melendez's respect in the process as both of them start giving him the cold shoulder, leading Jared to apply for Denver Memorial Hospital. After Shaun makes a mistake that nearly kills a patient, he decides to take full responsibility of the incident, despite Glassman reminding him of the deal he previously made with Andrews. Nevertheless, Shaun and Glassman enter Andrews's office to confess, albeit at the cost of Glassman's job.

Season 2[]

Andrews has become the President of the hospital, but maintains his job as Chief of Surgery as well. He meets three of his residents to give them feedback: Shaun, who had exceeded Andrews's expectations through expertise and concentration but still has to work out his clumsy communication skills if he is to remain a surgeon, then advises Claire to be more assertive and Morgan, due to her arrogant behaviour, to be more of a team player. However, when Claire does become more assertive, Andrews hypocritically reverts to his selfish personality, overreacting in a very unneccesary manner when Claire objects against the working policy hours in a very calm and polite way. Also, despite his clashing with Jared while working with Shaun on a homeless patient's case during his very last day, eventually relents when Jared genuinely stands up for Shaun.

Despite being pressured to relinquish his Chief of Surgery job, Andrews still remains firm on his previous decision, but that is until a viral quarantine that he is forced to employ Dr. Jackson Han to fill in for the vacant position due to the hospital board's recommendation of suspending the medical licenses of Shaun, Melendez and Dr. Lim. Much like Andrews, Han clashes with Shaun displaying the doubts the former had about him being able to be an excellent surgeon, particularly due to his communication skills, resulting in Han deciding to transfer Shaun, against his own wishes, to Pathology and forbid him from making any contact with patients or their families. Shaun demands he be transferred back to Surgery, which Han refuses to do. After doing this again in a very emotional way, Han loses his patience and fires Shaun, having previously threatened him into doing so if he did not leave his office. Andrews and others try to change Han's decision, with no success, telling Shaun to face reality and things are the way they have to be. When all hope seemed to be lost and the board sided with Han, Andrews, at the last minute decides to defend Shaun by using his power as President to fire Han in order for Shaun to be rehired, having been inspired by Shaun's speech about his brother Steve and Glassman's fighting for Shaun, but it would also be his downfall as his actions led to him being fired as well.
