Captain Marcus Gildark is a minor character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and its 2014 manga & 2016 anime television series adaptations of the same name, and a supporting character in the 2015 spin-off prequel light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Ex.

Gildark was a knight serving among the ranks of the Lugunican Imperial Knights, an organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of the Dragonfriend Kingdom of Lugunica. A seasoned veteran, Marcus was the captain of the Knights of the Royal Guard, the group of elite knights charged with the protection of the Lugunican Royal Family and other important officials.

Marcus Gildark is voiced by Tetsu Inada in Japanese and by Chris Tergliafera in English. Inada has also voiced Endeavor in My Hero Academia, Sajin Komamura in Bleach, Ira Gamagōri in Kill la Kill, and Kurogane in Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. Tergliafera has also voiced Muhammad Avdol in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Appearance[]

Marcus had a chiselled face that, rather befitting of his stern personality and earth-based abilities, was often compared to a boulder or a craggy cliff. He was a large man with an abundancy of muscles which were usually concealed within his armor. Thanks to his bulging muscles, his neck and shoulders were impossibly thick in comparison to an average person's. His eyes were blue and his green-colored close-cropped hair was cut into a box. Unlike most members of the Knights of Lugunica, Marcus wore a suit of plate armor with gold trimmings. Transfixed to his waist was a sword he used in battle. Overall, his appearance exuded the martial spirit of a disciplined warrior.

History[]

Marcus Gildark was born in the Dragonfriend Kingdom of Lugunica. Lugunica was a nation that was protected and cultivated by the Holy Dragon Volcanica, who had a pact with the Lugunican Royal Family. His father, Razaac Gildark, was the commander of the Imperial Knights of Lugunica, which served as Lugunica's armed forces. When Marcus was young, Razaac was killed protecting civilians in the Lugunican city of Pictat. Roughly forty years later, Marcus had assumed the position his father had once held as captain of the Royal Guard. He was heralded as a respected veteran and was considered the second strongest warrior Lugunica had to offer, falling short of the Master Swordsman Reinhard van Astrea.

The Dragon Tablet[]

Shortly after the destruction of the House of Argyle, every person who bore royal blood in their veins suddenly and inexplicably fell ill. Months after the beginning of the plague, Felix's trial period within the Knights of Lugunica ended, and he was officially inducted into the Royal Guard. Marcus subsequently began treating the demi-human worse, as he no longer felt that he needed to give Ferris preferential treatment. Ferris brought his complaints to the sickly Prince Fourier, who laughed about the sudden emergence of Gildark's supposed mischievous side.

Months later, the entire Lugunican Royal Family, including Fourier and the King, died to the illness. The nobility of Lugunica fell into a panic, as with the King and his heirs gone, there was nobody to uphold the pact with Volcanica that they relied on. Rulership of the Kingdom fell to the Council of Elders, who quickly became the highest priority for Marcus and the Royal Guard.

In the aftermath of the Royal Family's death, a new prophecy was inscribed on the Dragon Tablet. The prophecy revealed that, with the Lugunican Family gone, the Kingdom would seek out five candidates to become Lugunica's forty-second ruler. A candidate would be identified by Dragon Jewels which would light up when held by a worthy individual. The candidate who won the Royal Selection would be tasked with entering a new pact with the Holy Dragon. The Knights of Lugunica were tasked with locating each candidate so the Royal Selection could begin.

Powers & Abilities[]

Marcus Gildark was the second-strongest warrior in the Kingdom of Lugunica, only falling behind Reinhard van Astrea in terms of martial might. In terms of combative ability, he was superior to Julius Juukulius and roughly equal to Roswaal L. Mathers. His leadership skills were exemplary.
