Maria Rambeau, also known as Captain Marvel, is a supporting character in the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

She is an alternate version of her Earth-199999 counterpart who is a Human-Kree hybrid who can manipulate cosmic energy, and became a member of the Illuminati. During the trial of Doctor Strange, she was killed alongside her teammates during Scarlet Witch's pursuit of America Chavez.

She was portrayed by Lashana Lynch, who played Nomi in No Time to Die and alternate versions of the character in Captain Marvel and The Marvels.

Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known about this version of Maria Rambeau, but it's presumed that most of her early history lines with her Earth-199999 counterpart. She would become an officer in the United States Air Force, where she rose to the rank of captain. At some point during her career, she became a Human-Kree hybrid after encountering the alien race, and gained the ability to manipulate cosmic energy from the Tesseract. Adopting the name "Captain Marvel", Rambeau protected worlds from numerous threats, and became known as the defender of cosmos. She was later offered a position in the Illuminati by the sorcerer Stephen Strange alongside the mutant Professor X, the scientist Mr. Fantastic, the Inhuman Black Bolt, and super soldier Captain Carter.

When Thanos started his search of the infinity stones to wipe out half of the universe, the Illuminati came together to stop his plans. When the team couldn't find a way to defeat him directly, Supreme Strange started to use the Darkhold to find solutions within the multiverse, but it only resulted in the destruction of a universe. The Illuminati then located the Book of Vishanti to defeat Thanos on his home planet, and Rambeau witnessed Strange's willing execution at the hands of Black Bolt. When returning home, the team decided to cover up Strange's death by telling the public that he was killed fighting Thanos. After the Infinity War, they feared of any incursion that would happen in the universes and decided to have the Baxter Foundation to do multiversal research.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness[]

When Earth-199999 Doctor Strange arrived on Earth-838, the Illuminati came together to see what to do with him and his ally America Chavez. During the trial on Strange, Scarlet Witch arrived by dream-walking into her Earth-838 counterpart in her pursuit of Chavez. While Professor X and Mordo remained with Strange to cast their votes, Captain Marvel, Mr. Fantastic, Captain Carter and Black Bolt decided to confront Maximoff. After witnessing the brutal demise of Mr. Fantastic and Black Bolt, Captain Marvel and Captain Carter battled the witch until both were defeated. During the fight, Rambeau would seemingly lose her powers before Maximoff crushed her to death with a statue. The group's failure to stop Wanda resulted in the death of Professor X, as Mordo remained the only surviving member who became determined to defeat Strange.
