Marina is the titular main protagonist from the 1975 anime version of The Little Mermaid. She is a beautiful mermaid who will do anything to be with her prince whom she saved from drowning. She changes into sea foam in the end, because she never ends up with the prince.
She was voiced by Fumie Kashiyama in the Japanese version and the late Kirsten Bishopric in the English version.
Biography[]
Marina is first seen swimming with her friend Fritz, a dolphin. When she reaches her castle home, she wishes to go to the surface. She eventually goes to the surface and sees a prince on the ship. When a storm comes and the prince goes overboard, she rescues the prince from drowning. Once on dry land, a raven-haired young woman arrives and cares for him. This makes Marina sad, and she went to see the Sea Witch to be a human in exchange for her voice. The sea witch tells Marina that if the prince doesn't end up with her and marries someone else, then she'll become a sea foam. When Marina becomes a human, the prince takes her in and they spend time and done everything together in a month. The prince told Marina that he dislikes arranged marriages and that he's more into the raven-haired girl, but couldn't because she's a nun. To Marina's enthusiasm, he then told her if he can't marry the raven-haired girl, it will be Marina.
But her happiness doesn't last long. The prince marries someone else whom he assumed saved his life; the same raven-haired girl who is revealed to be a princess and declares his love for her, much to Marina's shock and anguish. At the ship, her sisters, who traded their hair for the Sea Witch's help, instructed her to kill the prince with a magic knife in return for her to turn back into a mermaid. Marina couldn't bring herself to kill the prince and decided to sacrifice herself for the prince's happiness.
As the prince rushes outside, immediately calling her, Marina throws herself overboard into the sea and then transforms into sea foam when the sun came up, completely ascending into the sky by a trail of colorful bubbles that rose from the spot she fell into. What is left of Marina was her lily pin and her mermaid scale, also making the prince realize that she was the real girl that saved his life but it is way too late.
Appearance[]
Marina is a very beautiful mermaid princess with long blonde hair that covers her breasts, turquoise blue eyes, fair skin, small pink lips, a light brush of freckles, and an aquamarine green fishtail. She also wears a white lily with a light pink pearl in her hair.
As a human, her tail turns into a pair of slender legs. She is seen mostly wearing a light blue dress along with a necklace with an opal pendant and white pearl earrings.
Personality[]
Marina is sweet, kind, loving, compassionate, selfless, loyal, curious, fun-loving and brave. She sacrifices everything she has for the prince's love, including giving up her beautiful singing voice for a potion to turn her human and turning to foam so the prince can live.
