Marina Ida is a major character in the Splatoon franchise serving as a supporting character in Splatoon 2, one of the two tritagonists (alongside Pearl) of Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion and the overarching protagonist of Splatoon 3: Side Order. She is an Octoling who, alongside her partner Pearl, is a member of Off the Hook. Gentle and reserved, she is the foil to her more hot-blooded partner Pearl, with whom she used to host Inkopolis News and Splatfests.
She is voiced by Alice Peralta.
Appearance[]
Marina is a tall Octoling woman, standing at 175cm tall, with dark brown skin. She has teal eyes which are pink at the edges, teal eyebrows constantly downturned into a "worried" expression, as well as an Octoling "eye mask" pattern which resemble two large eyelashes on the top and bottom of her eyes. She has long black tentacles with teal gradients and a beauty mark on the left side of her mouth. Marina also appears to be rather muscular, having large forearm muscles, and also possesses a teal gradient on her fingers.
In her outfit in Splatoon 2, Marina wears a sleeveless, high-collared black crop top with a large metal zipper which is partially undone. The zipper itself also possesses an eight-like hole. She wears a teal navel piercing, black pleated shorts, light teal tights and black boots with similar zippers to her top. The grooves on Marina's shorts light up in sync with music. Marina also wears black fingerless gloves and black headphones with teal rings on them. During Splatfests, the teal on Marina's design changes colour to whatever her team colour is, sans her eyebrows. Marina continues wearing this outfit after the events of Side Order, though her tentacles now have her new coloration.
In the Octo Expansion, Marina's outfit has a more hip-hop theme and resembles the attire of late rapper Tupac Shakur. She wears a white bandana with light gray tentacle designs wrapped around her head, a long, silver chain necklace with an infinity-symbol pendant (similar to her zippers from her stage outfit) around her neck, a black wristwatch and a black chain bracelet on her right arm, a white turtleneck crop top, aqua coloured capris, and silver slip-on shoes with a bow on top and white soles. She also retains her headphones.
During the final Splatfest of Splatoon 2, Marina wore a high-collared tight silver dress with a number-eight cut at the chest and very long sleeves turning into gloves, gray leggings with a darker diamond pattern, and matching thigh-length heeled boots covered by her dress. She also had two diamond shapes painted on her left cheek and a different pair of headphones, with diamond shapes instead of circles.
In her appearances in Splatoon 3, Marina now wears an orange suit with a subtle zig-zag pattern and a deep blue interior, similarly patterned pants as well as black high-heels with blue soles. Her suit is unbuttoned, revealing her black bandeau, and the teal gradient on her tentacles and fingers are now deep blue, with a starry pattern being present on her tentacles. Marina's new headphones have a glowing sea-green circle pattern on each ear which are connected by two orange tubes, with a small piece of reflective metal on either temple. She also wears black leather gloves. While Marina is depicted wearing her navel piercing and shorter gloves in her 2D art, she does not don them in Side Order when she appears in-person, with her hologram model during the Bankalive Gou at Nintendo Live 2024 concert also lacking these features, with Marina's gloves instead covering her knuckles.
As Marina Agitando, Marina wears her outfit from the Order VS. Chaos Splatfest. She wears a blocky, grey and teal VR headset with what appears to be game controllers on the temples, which Order seems to use to control her. Marina constantly maintains a meditative pose and is wrapped in what appears to be a large, inky octopus tentacle which occasionally glows red. She also has numerous grey pipes and wires connecting her to the ceiling and her silver loudspeakers, which have a black interior, a red center with the Memverse's infinity logo and a rhombus-shaped metal frame in the front. Marina herself also appears much larger, possibly from Order trying to make her look more imposing, with her tentacles also lacking any gradient.
During the Grand Festival, Marina wears a white plunge bikini top, a multi-tiered chrome necklace with round pendants hanging from a bronze choker, partially unbuttoned white pants with crossed laces on the bare sides, and tall white laced boots. Lacking her usual headphones, she wears multiple piercings in her ears, with a small, teal round one on the front and several purple spikes behind. Her fingertips have a gradient to white, matching Shiver and Frye's.
Background[]
Marina was raised into the Octarian army ruled by DJ Octavio, where she was trained to be a combat engineer, and graduated at only nine years old, meeting the would-be musician Acht (better known as Dedf1sh) at her school. She later was assigned to design Flooders and improve the Great Octoweapons. Eventually, during Agent 3's battle with DJ Octavio, she, along with many other Octarians, heard the Calamari Inkantation sung by the Squid Sisters. This song inspired her to rebel from the Octarian army and escape to the surface, where she met Pearl, and the two of them eventually stated the band Off the Hook.
Biography[]
Splatoon 2[]
After releasing several songs, Off the Hook became very popular, to the point of taking the Squid Sisters' role as the hosts of Inkopolis News. At the beginning of the game, the duo announce the disappearance of Callie and the Great Zapfish, and celebrates their return after the player completes Hero Mode, playing the Squid Sisters' new single, Fresh Start.
Like the Squid Sisters prior, Pearl and Marina announce the current stages in rotation for the player, as well as news regarding the Splatfest events.
Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion[]
Marina is a major character in this DLC pac, alongside Pearl., where they help guide Agent 8 through the various tests provided by Kamabo Co., and help them and Cap'n Cuttlefish escape the Deepsea Metro. During the campaign, Marina creates a group chat where she, Pearl and Cuttlefish talk, with the player unlocking more chat logs as they progress through the story.
Marina and Pearl appear on-screen after Agent 8 finally reaches the surface after fighting a brainwashed Agent 3, arriving in their helicopter to pick up Agent 8, the unconcious Agent 3, and Cap'n Cuttlefish, while a huge statue rises from the sea, from which Commander Tartar appears inside and reveals it has been watching over the Inklings and Octolings, and was disgusted at their hedonistic lifestyle, so it plans to destroy Inkopolis by shooting a laser of sanitized ink from a cannon in the statue's mouth. Marina analyzes it and comes up with a plan to save the day. She intends to drop her Hyperbombs (which are full of ink) all over statue while Agent 8 goes and detonates them, while Pearl charges up her voice to use as a powerful cry using her Princess Cannon to counteract the laser from destroying Inkopolis. Marina's plan works exactly as intended as Tartar is defeated.
Splatoon 3[]
Marina and Pearl appear as a background music artst in Splatoon 3, teaming up with three unknown members to form Damp Socks featuring Off the Hook.
Splatoon 3: Side Order[]
Sometime after the events of the Octo Expansion, Marina would realise that the Sanitized Octarians were created by removing the memories of regular Octarians, converting them into Mem cakes and replacing these missing memories with dummy data that lead to complete obedience. As such, she would create the Memverse, a digital space in which she could begin implanting these memories and thoughts back into their rightful owners via virtual adventures that would strengthen the bonds between their souls and memories.
However, a rogue AI encoded within the Memverse, Order, would begin to hijack Marina's project, trapping people within the virtual realm and draining them of their personalities in order to 'fulfil' Marina's desire for order, turning them into mindless husks. Later on, during a test of the project, Marina herself would be trapped within the Memverse's Spire of Order as one of Order's enthralled soldiers, with the AI also capturing Pearl and Agent 8 as it transports them into the tower. One of the victims of Order's soul-sucking, Acht, would regain their memories and free will. They heard Marina's cries for help at the top of the tower and attempted to rescue her but ended up being mauled by the Jelletons, forcing them to hide in the elevator, where they eventually meet Agent 8 and help them ascend the Spire.
When found on Level 10F of the Spire, Marina can be seen strapped to an odd, inky machine, wearing her outfit from the final Splatfest of Splatoon 2 and being mind-controlled by an odd headset she's wearing. Marina spots Pearl and Agent 8 and, noting them as intruders, begins her boss fight. In the battle, Marina uses her loudspeakers to generate a force field around herself, firing blobs of ink at Agent 8 as well. This force field must be destroyed by destroying the portals holding it up and once the shield is down, the gunk Marina is stuck in must also be inked.
Upon being freed, Marina's headset disappears and she's ejected from the machine, returning to her normal self. Order reveals itself as Marina's possessor and announces that since it now has a physical form, it has no need for a vessel and ejects the trio from the tower before increasing the number of floors in order to stall them and give itself more time to continue consuming the minds of others.
Upon awakening, Agent 8 realises that Marina has changed back to her usual outfit and that Pearl is back to her regular self thanks to Marina deactivating the adventure mode code making her a drone. Marina thanks them for saving her and explains that Order has overtaken the Memverse and stolen the minds of hundreds, if not thousands of innocent civilians, which Acht remarks is how they got sucked in. Marina reveals that Order wishes to create a perfect, orderly world without individuality by stealing the minds of everybody on Earth, draining their personalities via a process known as "greyscaling". Marina expresses her guilt over indirectly causing this mess, to which Pearl insists that she needn't feel bad as she had good intentions in creating the Memverse and promises that they'll defeat Order. The four go on to ascend the tower again, with Marina also hacking the Memverse to give Agent 8 permanent upgrades in exchange for Prlz at the lowest floor.
After 8 battles through numerous levels and bosses, the party arrive at the Control Room to confront Order. As it announces its plans for world domination, proclaiming the benefits of an unchanging, orderly world, Marina rebukes it, proclaiming that while chaos and change can be messy and even painful, they can cause wonderful things to happen. Order is disgusted at being rejected by its creator and thus, transforming into a gigantic octopus, attacks Agent 8, starting the boss battle against it.
While Agent 8 valiantly fights, they're unable to defeat Order in time, allowing it to initiate mass grayscaling as Marina desperately attempts to shut it down to no avail. Fortunately, via the player's assistance the heroes are reinvigorated by the beat of music. Acht and Marina play Spectrum Obligato: Out of Order Mix which not only reinvigorates Agent 8 and drastically changes the Spire's atmosphere, but also sends Order into a dance-frenzy. Thus, Agent 8 and Pearl beat down the malicious AI one more time, causing it to explode.
When the smoke clears, it's revealed that the damage done to Order caused it to assume a form resembling a baby octopus. Now dubbed Smollusk, it swears revenge against the gang though Pearl, enamoured by its cuteness, offers to let it attend the last concert of Off the Hook's world tour if it behaves. Smollusk accepts and with that, Marina and the rest enter the final elevator, returning to the real world.
Later on, when Agent 8 re-enters the Memverse, Marina reveals that despite their efforts, some soul fragments remain trapped in the Memverse as palettes and thus, 8 will have to traverse the Spire again to free them. Arriving at the top, 8 finds Smollusk who is keen on revenge. While the party try to dissuade him from fighting, he transforms into his Overlorder form and attacks, forcing 8 to fight him again. Defeated once more, Smollusk swears vengeance again as 8 leaves the Memverse. As 8 reattempts the run through the Memverse, freeing the rest of the souls, Order gradually starts to mellow out, realising its mistakes and warming up to 8. Eventually, when 8 leaves the Memverse with their own memories, Order bids them farewell and hopes to fight them on friendly terms sometime in the future. As such, Order redeems itself and continues assisting Marina, helping her manage the Memverse while she continues to perform with Pearl.
Personality[]
Marina is a rather gentle and kind-hearted figure. Similar to Marie, she is meant to serve as a foil to their respective more energetic partner (Pearl for Marina and Callie for Marie). She is somewhat shy, seen when she makes awkward-looking smiles during Inkopolis News, this seems to stem from the fact that she was initially dismissed as a weird looking yet tall inkling when she and Pearl first started as Off the Hook, and that she is getting used to the Inkling language. Marina is heavily implied to have a crush on Pearl, making a manga dedicated to the duo in the style of shojo manga, and having a very affectionate-looking hug at the end of the Octo Expansion. This is also exemplified during the Final Splatfest in which Marina is horrified at the prospect of Off the Hook breaking up, becoming very relieved when hearing that she and Pearl are in fact staying together,
Marina is also seen to be very intelligent, seen when she helps create unique stages specifically for Splatfests in Splatoon 2 known as Shifty Stations. Her background as a soldier in the Octarian army and tech enthusiast shows as the Shifty Stages often include various Octarian technology seen in the first two game's single player campaign. Her intelligence is further shown in the final boss of the Octo Expansion against Commander Tartar, as she quickly forges a plan to save Inkopolis using her laptop after Tartar threatens to destroy it. She is also intelligent enough to program an entire virtual realm to house the souls and memories of Sanitised Octarians in order to restore their personalities and being. Despite this, Marina seems rather socially inept, as it's mentioned by Acht that she goes on long lectures about her special interests at times and seems clueless when it comes to sarcasm or any kind of snide remark.
Trivia[]
- Marina is the first idol in the Splatoon series to be an Octoling, with Shiver succeeding her as the second.
- Marina seems to be a fan of the Squid Sisters, presumably after hearing them sing the Calamari Inkantation in Octo Valley which changed her (and many other Octarians') life. This shown as she has two stickers representing them on her laptop.
- She also seems to be a fan of Deep Cut as she claims to know every one of their songs.
- Despite this, the two bands (sans Big Man) end up getting into a rap battle when Off the Hook comes to perform in Splatsville, though Marina is completely oblivious to Shiver's passive-aggressive disses throughout the song, only responding with compliments. It is possible, however, that Marina is in fact aware of the insults and is instead being sarcastic with her compliments. It’s later confirmed that Marina was genuinely oblivious to Shiver’s disses, with Marina also being clueless to Shiver's snide remark at Off the Hook and the Squid Sisters barging in on the Anarchy Splatcast.
- Marina apparently owns a motorcycle. She also appears to be capable of playing the piano as shown from 2D art of her and the band Damp Socks ft. Off the Hook in Splatoon 3.
- Due to never taking off her headphones in-game, Marina's 3D models lack ears.
- While unconfirmed, Marina and Pearl are heavily implied to be in a romantic relationship in Side Order, with the pair frequently having dialog that comes across as flirtatious. Furthermore, the duo are shown to be much closer, with Pearl being extremely protective of Marina after she's freed from Order's control and Marina also showing offense when she thinks Acht is flirting with Pearl. Furthermore, Pearl mentions that she and Marina sleep in the same bed and even brings up "some real fun time" after the two escape, implying that the two partake in certain activities. In the song “Suffer No Fools”, Frye insults Marina by calling her Pearl’s “grouper”, a reference to groupies; women who have romantic relationships with members of a band and follow them around, further displaying that Marina and Pearl are in a relationship.
- Marina's attraction to Pearl is displayed even more in the Dev Diaries found as she frequently uses heart emojis when writing about Pearl, even comparing herself to a "storybook princess" and Pearl to a brave knight who will rescue her when discussing placing digital copies of herself and Pearl in the Memverse to help the Sanitised Octarians in their journey. Marina even has a picture of Pearl flirtatiously holding both of their zippers as her laptop wallpaper, coupled with a gif of a tiny pixelated Pearl dancing at the side.
- Art for the Grand Festival also shows Pearl and Marina interlocking fingers while holding hands, suggesting a much more close relationship than the other idols. Their lyrics for the Grand Festival song “Three Wishes” also revolve around talking about how they’re thankful for the present as they can experience each others’ love.
- The Splatoon 3 relationship chart between the game’s NPCs (which is currently only available in Japanese) also reveals that Marina had romantic feelings for Pearl.
- At 1.75m, or 5'9'', Marina is the tallest idol in the Splatoon series, with the heights of Deep Cut not being revealed yet.
- It’s stated that Marina is the one who designed the Flooders, Octarian robots that cover surfaces below them in ink.
- As seen from her palette in Side Order, Marina’s preferred weapon is the Brella.
- According to a developer interview, Marina styled the galaxy pattern of her tentacle tips in Splatoon 3 after Pearl’s spacesuit-themed jacket.
- According to Acht, Marina created an indie rhythm game during her time in engineering school which ran at absurdly high BPMs, which they managed to beat with extreme difficulty. As Pearl somehow beat it easily, Marina has created an even harder sequel to it.
- They also claim that Marina had a conversation with herself on excavators for two hours, to which Marina starts to begin another monologue about the machines before Acht cuts her off.
- The Grand Festival Splatfest for Splatoon 3 marks the first time Marina's ears have ever been seen in-game. Interestingly, both of her ears are indented unlike other Octolings in the series.
