A voice identifies the world as the dreamland of Subcon, and asks for Mario's help in defeating the villainous frog named Wart, a tyrant who has cursed Subcon and its people. Mario suddenly awakes and decides to tell Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach, who all admit to having the same dream. The group goes on a picnic, but discovers a cave with a long staircase. Through a door at the top, they are transported to Subcon, revealing their dreams to have been real. After defeating Wart Birdo and the rest of the 8-bits, the people of Subcon are freed and everyone celebrates. However, Mario suddenly wakes up in his bed afterwards, unsure if these events were a dream. He then goes back to sleep.
Super Mario Bros. 3[]
The plot of this game kicks off with Bowser's seven children, the Koopalings, invading the Mushroom Kingdom, with each of them going to one of the seven kingdoms within it, stealing the respective king's magic wand and turning them into an animal. Upon hearing this, Peach sends Mario and Luigi to travel to each of the kingdoms, retrieve the wands from them and turn the kings back to normal. Throughout the game, the brothers receive notes and special items from her after rescuing each of the first six kings, but after they rescue the seventh, they receive a note from Bowser instead, boasting that he has kidnapped her and imprisoned her within the castle of his own realm, Dark Land. The brothers travel there, enter his castle, defeat Bowser in a battle and free her as a result.

However, while resting on the beach, Peach is captured by Bowser. When Mario and Luigi wake up, they try to find her and, after hours of searching, come across a giant egg in the forest. It suddenly hatches and out of it comes a young dinosaur named Yoshi, who tells them his dinosaur friends have also been imprisoned in eggs by evil Koopalings. Mario and Luigi soon realize it must be the evil King Bowser and his Koopalings, so together, the 3 of them set out through Dinosaur Land to save Peach and Yoshi's dinosaur friends. To aid him, Yoshi gives Mario a cape as they begin their journey. Mario and Luigi continue to follow Bowser, defeating the Koopalings in the process, and saving Yoshi's friends in the process. They eventually arrive at Bowser's Castle, where they fight him in a final battle. They send Bowser flying into the sky and save Princess Peach, restoring peace to Dinosaur Land.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[]
While Mario was venturing through Sarassaland in Super Mario Land, the evil Wario stole Mario's castle from Mario Land, so Mario must retrieve his castle from Wario.
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3[]
He makes a cameo appearance during the ending for Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 where he retrieves a giant golden statue of Princess Toadstool using a helicopter after the destruction of Captain Syrup's tower.
Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS[]
The game begins with a letter from Princess Peach inviting Mario to come to her castle for a cake she has baked for him. When he arrives, Mario discovers that Bowser has invaded the castle and imprisoned the princess and her servants within it using the power of the castle's 120 Power Stars. The Power Stars are hidden in the castle's paintings, which serve as portals to other worlds where Bowser's minions keep watch over the Stars. Mario explores the castle and enters these worlds, gaining access to more rooms as he recovers more Stars. Twice in his adventure, Mario unlocks doors to different floors of the castle with keys obtained by defeating Bowser in hidden worlds. He recovers at least 70 of the 120 Stars, breaking the curse of the endless stairs that block the entrance to Bowser's final hiding place. After Mario defeats Bowser in the final battle, he obtains a special Power Star which gives him the Wing Cap, and he flies back to the castle. Peach is then released from the stained-glass window above the castle's entrance, and she rewards Mario by kissing him on the nose and tells the Toads that they should all start baking the cake that she had promised him. At the end of the credits, she, Mario and a couple of Toads are then seen waving at the camera as the Lakitu filming the game flies away.
The DS version mostly plays out the same way, except in this version, Mario heads there with both Luigi and Wario, and all 3 of them end up getting captured. In Mario's case, he ends up getting imprisoned by Goomboss, but once Yoshi, who was informed of their disappearance, finds and defeats him, he frees Mario, who joins him to look for the others, recover the Power Stars and rescue Peach. He subsequently defeats King Boo and frees Luigi, who in turn, defeats Chief Chilly and frees Wario, with the 4 of them going on to collect at least 80 of the Power Stars, defeat Bowser, and like in the original, receive thanks from Peach, who promises to bake them all a cake, followed by them waving at the audience after the credits as the Lakitu filming it flies away.
Super Mario Sunshine[]
Mario sets out for Isle Delfino for a vacation with Princess Peach, her steward Toadsworth, and several other Toads. Upon their arrival at Delfino Airstrip, they discover a mass of paint-like goop. After acquiring the Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device (F.L.U.D.D.), a water cannon created by Professor E. Gadd, Mario defeats a slime-covered Piranha Plant that emerges from the goop, only to be arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of vandalizing the island with the goop graffiti. During a court trial held to assign punishment to Mario, it is revealed that the source of the island's power, the Shine Sprites, have fled the island's Shine Gate as a result of the acts of pollution. With the Shine Sprites gone, the island has subsequently been covered in darkness and has halted proceedings on the island. Being sentenced as guilty, Mario is assigned to clean up the island as community service and track down the real criminal behind the goop.
The culprit is revealed to be a shadowy blue doppelgänger of Mario known as Shadow Mario. Using a magic paintbrush, also developed by Professor E. Gadd, Shadow Mario created the goop. He attempts to kidnap Princess Peach but is thwarted by Mario. After the player collects ten Shine Sprites, Shadow Mario successfully kidnaps Peach, and takes her to Pinna Island. Arriving at Pinna Park, the central theme park on the island, Mario encounters and destroys Mecha Bowser, a giant Bowser robot controlled by Shadow Mario. Afterwards, Shadow Mario reveals that his true identity is Bowser Jr., and that he framed Mario because his father, Bowser, told him that Peach is his mother whom Mario was trying to kidnap. Mecha Bowser's head then transforms into a hot air balloon and Bowser Jr. takes Peach to Corona Mountain.
After the player defeats Bowser Jr. (in his Shadow Mario disguise) in the seven main levels, Delfino Plaza becomes flooded, and the way to Corona Mountain is opened. Mario travels through the lava-filled caverns and finds Bowser, Bowser Jr. and Princess Peach in a giant hot tub in the sky. Mario defeats Bowser and Bowser Jr. by destroying the hot tub, causing everyone to fall from the sky. Bowser and Bowser Jr. land on a platform in the ocean, while Mario and Peach land on a small island. However, F.L.U.D.D. is damaged by the fall and powers down. Mario and Peach watch as the Shine Gate's power is restored while a group of Piantas and Nokis celebrate. Meanwhile, Bowser admits to his son that Peach is not really his mother, to which Bowser Jr. replies that he already knows, and that when he is older he wants to fight Mario again. Mario and Princess Peach watch the sunset at Sirena Beach, and the Toads present Mario with F.L.U.D.D., who has been repaired, and he declares that their vacation can begin now.
New Super Mario Bros.[]
Mario and Princess Peach are walking together when lightning suddenly strikes Peach's castle nearby. As Mario runs to investigate, Bowser Jr. appears, sneaking up on the Princess from behind and kidnapping her. Realizing what has happened, Mario quickly rushes back and gives chase. Mario ventures through eight worlds pursuing Bowser Jr. and trying to rescue the captured princess. Mario catches up to them and confronts Bowser Jr. occasionally, but is unable to save the princess from the young Koopa's clutches. At the end of the first world, Bowser Jr. retreats to a castle, where his father, Bowser, awaits Mario on a bridge over a pit filled with lava. In a scene highly reminiscent of the original Super Mario Bros., Mario activates a button behind Bowser to defeat him, and the bridge underneath Bowser collapses, causing him to fall into the lava which burns his flesh, leaving a skeleton.
Though Bowser was defeated in the first level, this does not stop Bowser Jr. from running through the remaining worlds with Peach in tow, forcing Mario to chase after him before reaching Bowser's castle in World 8. There, Bowser Jr. revives his father's skeleton, creating Dry Bowser, but Mario once again defeats Bowser by dropping him into a deep pit. In the final battle, Bowser Jr. flees once more across a lava chasm to a larger castle, where he throws his father's bones into a cauldron and revives Bowser in his original form. They attack Mario in tandem, but Mario drops the pair into the pit below. In the game's final sequence, Mario rescues Peach, who kisses him on the cheek. Over the end credits, Bowser Jr. is seen dragging his unconscious father across the floor. He looks at the screen, and growls, breaking the fourth wall.
Super Mario Galaxy[]
Mario is invited to the Star Festival by Princess Peach, who had something she wanted to give. He was enjoying the festival with the Toads, until the festival was interrupted by Bowser. Bowser, his troops and a UFO lift Peach's castle up into space to build Bowser's galactic empire at the center of the universe with Peach by his side. Before Mario could save Peach, he gets blasted away into space by Kamek.
Mario later awakens in the Gateway Galaxy, where he meets the Lumas and their "mother", Rosalina. Rosalina entrusted Mario with the Baby Luma's care, so that the Baby Luma could give Mario the power to star-spin.
After rescuing the Grand Star from Gateway Galaxy, Rosalina explains to Mario that she and the Lumas used to travel space with the Comet Observatory, but Bowser and his troops attacked them and stole their power sources--the Power Stars and Grand Stars. She then asks Mario to rescue the Power Stars and Grand Stars to power the Comet Observatory, and Mario agrees.
After rescuing all of the Power Stars and Grand Stars, Mario arrives at Bowser's Galaxy Reactor and battles him. He defeats Bowser, and rescues the final Grand Star and Peach.
Without the Grand Star's power, Bowser's galaxy starts sinking. It later explodes, creating a supermassive black hole which begins to consume everything in the universe, including Mario and Peach. Just then, the Baby Luma comes out from Mario's hat and waves goodbye, before he and the other Lumas throw themselves into the supermassive black hole to neutralize it.
After the black hole explodes, Mario appears in front of Rosalina, who saved him from the cataclysm. Rosalina explains to Mario that baby stars were born and that they will grow up to become galaxies someday. She tells Mario that when stars die, they become stardust and scatter across the cosmos, they eventually create new stars, and that the cycle continues. However, she explains that the cycle will never repeat itself in quite the same way, and tells Mario he will know the reason why.
Mario later awakens in the Mushroom Kingdom, where he sees everyone he's met during his adventure celebrating. He looks up in the air and notices a newborn galaxy. Rosalina speaks to him that all new life carries the essence of the stars, even Mario and his people. Mario realizes what she meant, and happily welcomes the new galaxy.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]
When Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Blue Toad are celebrating Princess Peach's birthday in her castle, a large cake appears. Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings emerge from the cake and trap Peach inside. The cake is loaded onto Bowser's airship and it takes off, with Mario, Luigi, and the two Toads giving chase. The Toads in the castle grant them access to the new items, the Propeller Mushrooms and Penguin Suits.
After traveling through several worlds fighting the Koopalings, Bowser Jr., and Kamek the Magikoopa, the Mario Bros. and the Toads arrive at Bowser's castle. Bowser is defeated but is revived by Kamek, who casts a magical spell that transforms him into a giant. Bowser chases after Mario and the others, destroying everything in his path, until Mario finds a large switch and triggers it, causing Bowser to fall through the ground and releasing Peach from her cage. Peach and Mario depart from the castle in a hot-air balloon, with Luigi and the Toads following behind.
The credits are shown as a minigame where the letters in the credits are written on blocks, which can be broken by the playable characters to get coins (all four characters appear, but only the ones controlled by players can get coins). After the credits, Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings help Bowser out of his unstable castle, which falls over.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[]
Similarly to the first game, Princess Peach invites Mario to share cake at the Star Festival, a rare occasion when Star Bits rain down from the skies over the Mushroom Kingdom. On his way, Mario finds a lost Baby Luma, who immediately befriends him and grants him the ability to spin. However, Bowser, who has consumed an unspecific number of Grand Stars and grown to a humongous size, spoils the event by attacking the castle. He then kidnaps her just as Mario arrives and escapes into space to recreate his empire at the center of the universe. After launching into outer space, Mario is given control of Starship Mario, a mobile planetoid in the shape of his head, made by a crafty Luma mechanic called Lubba, powered by Power Stars, and piloted by other Lumas; his mission is to fly across the universe in pursuit of Bowser and the Princess. Along the way, he meets new Lumas and joins up with his companion Yoshi, the Toad Brigade from the original Super Mario Galaxy, and his brother Luigi.
Upon collecting enough Power Stars, Mario reaches Bowser's giant starship generator, draining energy from what appears to be a comet. Mario infiltrates the starship and battles Bowser, making him fall to his presumed death. Just as he falls, the last Grand Star appears. Before Mario can grab it, Bowser emerges having survived and consumes the Grand Star, making him more powerful, but Mario manages to defeat him by ground pounding meteorites on Bowser, causing him to shrink. Mario then grabs the last Grand Star and saves Peach. After this, Rosalina and her Comet Observatory from the first Super Mario Galaxy appear before the two of them. Rosalina thanks Mario for watching over the Baby Luma that he had found, and Baby Luma returns to the Comet Observatory, taking Mario's hat with him. Mario and his friends then return to the Mushroom Kingdom to celebrate as they previously intended.
Super Mario 3D Land[]
On the grounds of Princess Peach's castle, a branched tree known as the "Tail Tree" loses all of its leaves during a storm. The leaves—which turn out to be Super Leaves—were really stolen by Bowser, who used them to give his henchmen Squirrel Tails, giving them additional skills like limited flight. The following day, Mario and the Toads go to investigate the tree and, initially unaware of the situation, find a letter from Bowser in which he confesses to having taken the princess hostage. With knowledge of Bowser's plans for the aforementioned stolen Super Leaves, Mario sets out in pursuit to find and save the princess.
A few times after rescuing Peach, Mario learns that Dry Bowser has returned and abducted, not Peach, but Mario’s younger twin brother. Mario finds the Special Worlds and goes there to find him. Upon entering the fortress, he hears Luigi crying for help. When Dry Bowser is defeated, Mario frees his younger brother, who thanks him for rescuing him. The duo goes to the other Special Worlds, defeating Dry Bowser two other times on the way. When Princess Peach is once again kidnapped by Bowser, Mario and Luigi rescue her again.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[]
Princess Peach waves goodbye to Mario and Luigi as they leave the balcony of Peach's Castle to go on a coin hunt as Raccoon Mario and Fox Luigi. But as soon as they get back, the Koopalings show up, smashing the brothers' Koopa Clown Vehicle into the ground and causing them to revert to Super Mario and Super Luigi. Princess Peach is revealed to be hidden behind Roy Koopa. Soon after, they take off in their Koopa Clown Vehicle as Mario and Luigi pursue them.
After the brothers leave World 5-Castle after fighting all of the Koopalings, they discover Peach imprisoned inside the Koopa Clown Car, which transports her to Bowser's Castle.
At Bowser's Castle, Mario and Luigi discover Bowser and Peach, who is imprisoned in a cage. One of the pair must walk on it. Switch behind Bowser to cause the bridge to fall and bring about Bowser's demise. The boys are about to celebrate their triumph when Peach's cage disappears from view. The Koopalings are discovered by Mario and Luigi when they were driving their Koopa Clown Vehicle over some bony platforms. They give Bowser more power, and Bowser grows enormous.
There is a huge switch at the top of the tower that, when pressed, causes Bowser to fall through the floor. The princess is then freed from her captivity. After that, everyone goes back to their homes, with Luigi trailing closely after and Mario carrying Peach in his arms.
The Koopalings are visible throughout the credits pulling the now-regular-sized Bowser with the Koopa Clown Vehicle in the background. The enormous weight of Bowser exceeds its limit. The Koopa Clown Car crash-lands near the end of the narrative, spreading everyone over the ground.
New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]
Mario, along with Luigi and two Toads, was thrown far away by a giant mechanical arm. They defeated the seven Koopalings in their castles on their way, plus other enemies such as Bowser Jr., Kamek and Nabbit. They then went to Peach's Castle which is now transformed into an evil reflection of Bowser. They later defeat Bowser and free Peach. With the castle back to normal, the heroes celebrate while to Koopalings and Bowser Jr. attempt to escape though they leave Bowser behind. In gameplay. He can be played as in all modes. He still retains his trademark jumping and power-ups though there is new power-ups that he can use such as the Super Acorn which turns him into Flying Squirrel Mario.
Super Mario 3D World/Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]
At the beginning of 3D World, he, along with Luigi, Peach and Blue Toad, are watching a fireworks show as they walk along a path leading from the castle until they find a tilted glass pipe. After Mario and Luigi fix it, a green fairy-like Sprixie princess appears and tells them that Bowser has kidnapped and trapped the rest of the Sprixie princesses in jars. However, they then witness him arrive through the pipe and capture her in a jar before escaping through it. Peach is the first one to jump into the pipe after them, with Mario quickly going in after her and the other two following suit. They find themselves in a realm known as "The Sprixie Kingdom" and set off to find the Sprixies. Throughout the game, he can be selected to play with on any of the levels and can use all the usual power-up items, as well as the new Super Bell, which allows them to don a Cat Suit that allows them to utilize new cat-like abilities, namely running faster on all fours, performing unique scratch attacks, and climbing up walls to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. After the heroes save the final Sprixie, Bowser recaptures all seven and heads to his amusement park fortress.
After they make their way through all the amusement park levels, defeat his minions and reach him in his fortress, Bowser uses the Super Bell to transform into a cat form called Meowser. The group proceeds to climb the tallest tower by utilizing the Super Bell and defeat Meowser. The heroes then say goodbye to the freed Sprixies and travel home through the pipe back to the Mushroom Kingdom. After the end credits, the Sprixies build a rocket ship in World 1 so that when they return, they can play extra levels in outer space and collect more Green Stars.
In Bowser's Fury, Mario is on a walk through the Mushroom Kingdom by himself one day when he discovers a mysterious black sludge M (resembling Shadow Mario’s logo from Super Mario Sunshine). After being absorbed by it, Mario finds himself in an archipelago of cat-themed islands called Lake Lapcat that have become overrun with black sludge. Upon his arrival, Mario encounters Bowser, who has grown to colossal size, is covered in the color black and acting more aggressive than usual (this form of him is appropriately nicknamed Fury Bowser). Right after coming across him, Mario collects a Cat Shine, causing Bowser to retreat. Bowser Jr. then appears and pleads for Mario's help restoring his father to normal, and while Mario gives him a stern look while he does so since it's apparent he caused this mess himself, he still agrees to help him.
The two travel across Lake Lapcat in order to obtain Cat Shines, and are occasionally aided by Plessie the aquatic dinosaur, both to travel to the various islands more quickly and collect some of the Cat Shines that are out on the water. After obtaining a certain number of Cat Shines, Mario gains access to the Giga Bell, a super-powered variation of the Super Bell. The Giga Bell transforms Mario into Giga Cat Mario, a colossal version of his regular cat form, allowing him to battle Fury Bowser.
After using the Giga Bells to fight Fury Bowser several times, Bowser is drained of the sludge which transformed him. Despite this, he remains colossal and out of control, and steals the three Giga Bells. Mario manages to retake the bells, using all three to turn Plessie to a giant and crush Bowser. Bowser is returned to his normal size and immediately tries to attack Mario since he's still angry, but Bowser Jr. stops him. However, he then acts hostile to Mario himself, effectively breaking off his alliance with him, and proceeds to leave with his father. Mario and the cats of Lake Lapcat then celebrate their victory atop the still giant Plessie. Surely enough, a series of paintings by Bowser Jr. shown during the credits confirm that he was responsible for accidentally creating Fury Bowser, having painted Bowser's face with his magic paintbrush while he was sleeping as a prank.
Super Mario Odyssey[]
Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach from the Mushroom Kingdom and takes her aboard his airship. This time, he's intent on forcibly marrying her. Mario, also aboard, attempts to rescue her, but is knocked off the ship by Bowser's hat and falls into the neighboring Cap Kingdom. With Mario gone, Bowser stomps on Mario's cap and lets it drift into the ship's rear propellers, shredding it to pieces. A piece of the hat is grabbed by Cappy, one of the Cap Kingdom's sentient hat-like creatures called Bonneters. The two meet, and he explains to Mario that Bowser also kidnapped his sister, Tiara, to be used as Peach's wedding tiara. Cappy joins Mario and takes the shape of Mario's cap, providing him with the ability to throw his cap and temporarily capture other creatures and objects and utilize their abilities. They travel to the nearby Cascade Kingdom, recover an airship called the Odyssey, and begin pursuing Bowser.
Mario and Cappy explore the various kingdoms to collect Power Moons to fuel the Odyssey and battle the Broodals, a team of anthropomorphic rabbit wedding planners hired by Bowser, who steal items including a dress, a cake, and a bouquet from each kingdom to set up Bowser's wedding. Eventually, they catch up to Bowser in his own kingdom; however, Bowser subsequently departs for his wedding on the Moon and leaves the two to fight the Broodals in their Mecha-Broodal. They defeat them and follow Bowser to the Moon.
Mario and Cappy fly the Odyssey to the Moon's surface and confront Bowser inside a cathedral, where many of the people they met throughout the other kingdoms are show in attendance, admitting they were forced to attend. Bowser then activates a trap door when Mario approaches him, and the two battle in the Moon's interior. Mario defeats Bowser and frees Peach and Tiara, but the cavern begins to collapse. Mario then captures an unconscious Bowser and uses his body and strength to escape to the surface with Peach and Tiara. After Peach thanks Mario for his help, Bowser regains consciousness and decides to properly propose to Peach, causing Mario to do the same in haste. Overwhelmed, Peach turns down their proposals as she, Cappy, and Tiara board the Odyssey. The rivals are both heartbroken until Peach tells Mario to come home with her. Mario boards the ship just in time, leaving Bowser stranded on the Moon.
After the main story has been completed and Mario and Cappy return to the Mushroom Kingdom, they decide to keep adventuring since there's still a lot more to do in the kingdoms they visited. Right after this, they are told by the Toads at Peach's castle that she's missing, so they start searching for her while they're at it. However, they quickly find out that she and Tiara simply decided to go visit all the other kingdoms on their own terms as a vacation since they didn't have the time to actually enjoy any of them the first time. Along the way, Mario and Cappy collect many more Power Moons, including those that were released from Moon Rocks that fell in each of the kingdoms, so they can travel to other parts of the Moon, known as "Dark Side" and "Darker Side", to complete other, tougher challenges.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[]
Spin-Off Games Appearances[]
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]
Princess Toadstool is unexpectedly abducted by King Bowser utilizing the Koopa Clown Car as she innocently sits on a hill outside Mario's Pad in the opening cutscene of the game. Knowing that Toadstool is in danger, Mario leaves his residence after hearing her cries for aid. He arrives in Bowser's Castle after following Toadstool and Bowser. After making his way around the castle, Mario eventually runs across Bowser and engages him in combat on the chandeliers. The moment he defeats him and is about to save the princess, the palace starts to tremble. Exor, a massive sword that descends from the sky and slams against Bowser's Castle, destroys the Star Road along the way and sends its fragments flying over the globe. Bowser, Toadstool, and Mario are sent after the crash.
Following the collision, Mario, Toadstool, and Bowser all take off in different directions and land in various locations throughout the globe. Vista Hill provides Mario with a glimpse of an inaccessible Bowser's Keep. Back at his home, where Toad has been looking for Toadstool, Mario lands. When Toad notices the princess is missing, he urges Mario to return to Bowser's Castle and fetch her. Mario enters the castle to look around even though he has no idea where she or Bowser are. However, when he gets there, he is startled to see Exor, who informs Mario that the keep has been taken over by the Smithy Gang in order to aid in its efforts to dominate the globe and is now theirs. Mario narrowly avoids being destroyed by Exor as he stands in the bridge entrance. This makes it impossible to get to the castle.
After Mario gets back to his house, Toad offers to go to Mushroom Kingdom to tell the Chancellor after hearing about the issue from Mario. They reach their target and enter Mushroom Castle after traversing Mushroom Way. Mario tells the Chancellor there, and he gives him the job of saving Toadstool. As the plumber leaves the castle, he encounters Mallow, who is purported to be a frog from Tadpole Pond. Before the thief Croco took his frog currency, Mallow was apparently conducting errands for his grandfather. As a result of Mario's decision to help Mallow, the two pursue Croco to Bandit's Way and successfully retrieve the coin. When they come back, the kingdom is dark and full of nefarious beasts.
When Mario and Mallow enter Mushroom Castle, they come face to face with Mack, the head of the Smithy Gang and a member who resembles a sword. Mario defeats him in a duel. One Star Piece is left after his defeat. Mario accepts it despite being unsure of what it is. The surviving Mack's minions run away with the intention of alerting Mack's superior to Mario. After saving the Mushroom Kingdom, Mallow decides to visit his house in Tadpole Pond to consult his grandfather about the recent bizarre chain of events. The two set out for there as a result.
They battle Belome, a large, canine-like foe, in the Kero Sewers as they make their way there. After being assaulted, water fills the sewers, flushing Mario down Midas Waterfall and along the Midas River until he reaches Tadpole Pond. When they arrive, Mallow's grandfather Frogfucius tells them what transpired up to that point and admits that he is not really connected to Mallow. Mallow is instructed to journey with Mario in search of his proper home. And last, he gives them the go-ahead to carry on their trip by going to Rose Town, where people are in need of assistance.
Then, Mario and Mallow use Rose Way to go to Rose Town. On their way, they almost collide with Bowser. They spy on him and learn that he is attempting to reclaim their fortress from the Smithy Gang with the help of some of his lieutenants. Mario and Mallow arrive in Rose Town after they depart. The area is being attacked by arrows that paralyze its targets. The two go to the nearby inn to find safety. There, Mario engages in playtime with Gaz, the innkeeper's son, and his dolls of Mario, Bowser, and Toadstool. Gaz brings out his favorite doll, Geno, as the game progresses. Unfortunately, a stray punch from the toy knocks Mario out. While everyone is asleep, a star appears and takes control of the Geno doll before entering the Forest Maze, the source of the falling arrows.
The following day, the two go into the forest after overhearing Gaz say that he saw Geno walk there. They see Geno soon after they arrive, and they follow him into the Forest Maze's depths. There, they catch a glimpse of Geno trying to recover the Star Piece that Bowyer is holding as well as Bowyer, a member of the Smithy Gang who resembles a bow and is in charge of launching the paralyzing arrows. Geno attacks Bowyer after failing to convince him to do so, and Mario and Mallow soon join him. They defeat Bowyer and win the second Star Piece by working together. Geno introduces himself and tells Mario and Mallow his plan: to retrieve the seven Star Pieces, pieces of the Star Road that Exor has destroyed. Wishes cannot come true without the Star Road. The three decides to work together to stop the Smithy Gang's leader Smithy and fix the Star Road. One of Bowyer's still-living flunkies overhears Geno's justification, though, and goes to tell Smithy.
On their pursuit of the Star Pieces, Mario's crew will next visit Moleville. Mario now sees Bowser and his army again. With his stay on Rose Way, Bowser has fewer minions, but he is still determined to reclaim his castle.
Two kids, Dyna & Mite, have been stranded in the coal mines as a result of a fallen star, upsetting the residents of Moleville. When Mario hears this, he enters. As he makes his way through the huge caves, a malfunctioning trampoline knocks him out, giving Croco the chance to steal his coins. Mario goes after him and his fellow Crooks and engages him in combat. Mario and his buddies retrieve what they lost when he is defeated, and after he is eliminated, Mario and his companions recover what they had lost and steal a bomb from him, which they use to blow out the mines.
When Mario explores farther, he meets Punchinello, who seeks to defeat Mario in order to gain fame. Before being defeated, he conjures a huge Bob-omb, which, fortunately, simply explodes to cover Mario and his pals in soot. The third Star Piece, which was nearby, is claimed by them. The kids are securely delivered back to their parents when Mario discovers Dyna & Mite and they all leave the mines via the minecar railway.
When Mario and company arrive at Booster's Snifits, they learn that their employer is busy entertaining a "princess from the sky" as soon as they leave Dyna & Mite's home. The group then departs Moleville in quest of more Star Pieces and in light of this new knowledge.
Princess Toadstool was held captive by the psychotic Booster at Booster Tower when Mario, Toadstool, and Bowser were launched from Bowser's Keep. Booster wants to marry Princess Toadstool. She cries out for Mario to intervene since she is distressed by this development
Mario's party reaches Booster Tower after a brief journey past Booster Pass. They witness Bowser sitting by himself and bemoaning the end of the "good old days" and his keep. He attempts to appear tough once he realizes Mario is there. Toadstool sees Mario at the top of the tower and shouts out to him. Bowser pretends not to care and walks away, but when Mario is unable to unlock the tower's main entrance, he returns. He bursts the door open because he freely chooses to assist Mario. He then admits them as honorary Koopa Troop members, joining Mario and his pals.
Mario is immediately forced to hide behind some drapes when Booster walks in. Mario and his companions follow in hot chase while Booster and his Snifits search the area for the former's Mario doll before leaving for the balcony. They had already managed to escape with the Toadstool, and Mario is eventually defeated by two of Booster's helpers, Knife Guy and Grate Man.
Booster, accompanied by Toadstool, sprints up Booster Hill while Mario chases after him. At the town of Marrymore, he tries to wed her, but Mario ruins the ceremony. The wedding cake's designers, Chef Torte and his Apprentice, get into a dispute with Mario just as he and Toadstool are about to leave the chapel to return to the Mushroom Kingdom. They are upset over their wasted efforts.
Their cake comes to life during the fight and attacks, but Booster eventually eats it. Toadstool and Mario return to Mushroom Castle and are greeted there. Toadstool is able to slip out of the castle and set up for her to remain undetected in order to join Mario's company. She does this because she wants to help Mario on his trip. Mallow advises enquiring about any lost Star Pieces with Frogfucius.
