Mark Fowler is a fictional character and central protagonist of the BBC British soap opera EastEnders.

He initially started out as a supporting character from 1985-1987, but later reappeared in April 1990 and became one of the show's main protagonists until his exit on 14th February 2003; the character was later killed-off in 2004 off-screen.

Originally played by David Scarboro in the 1980s, the character is most famously portrayed by Todd Carty, also known for playing Tucker Jenkins on Grange Hill.

Biography

The character Mark Fowler was the son of Arthur Fowler and Pauline Fowler, as well as the brother of Michelle Fowler and Martin Fowler. He had a successful wedding with his first wife Gill Fowler prior to her death on the following day, before later embarking on subsequent marriages with Ruth Fowler in the 1990s and Lisa Fowler in 2002.

In his earlier stint, Mark started out as a delinquent teenager who often got himself into trouble with many people in Albert Square and even became a suspect in the murder of Reg Cox since the show's first ever episode. However, he became a changed man after returning to the square as a 22-year-old in 1990. From then onwards Mark showed a more caring and stable nature who had grown out of his rebellious trait and used his newfound maturity to become a more responsible and helpful person than ever before.

Throughout his longer stint in between the 1990s and 2000-2003, Mark featured in some of the most prominent storylines during his tenure on the soap. Arguably his biggest and most prolific storyline saw the character announce that he had been diagnosed with HIV, which forced him to grow up fast and accept his responsibilities. He frequently found it difficult to accept the restrictions of the illness, which finally caused his death in April 2004.

Other storylines surrounding Mark's story arc revolved on his coping with Arthur's death; a longstanding rivalry with old tormentor and archnemesis Nick Cotton; a feud with Lisa's former boyfriend Phil Mitchell that steadily developed when Mark became a suspect in the Who Shot Phil? scenario; an unlikely friendship with Phil's brother Grant Mitchell; a close friendship with longtime friend Sharon Watts; and helping out in several circumstances that either impacts his family or the square in general.
