Martel (Marta in the 2003 anime English dub and the Polish sub-Hyper version of said anime) is one of the female characters in the anime/manga series Fullmetal Alchemist. She was a human chimera combined with a snake and one of Greed's henchmen. She had the ability to stretch and twist her limbs, as well as her neck.
Story[]
Beginnings[]
Martel was a member of the Amestris State Military and she was nearly killed in the battles of the Southern Borders. Half-dead, she was taken to the labs in Central City and experimented on using alchemy. This saved her life, but her body was molded with a snake to make her a human chimera. She would eventually escape the labs with several of her allies, who had also been changed. Sometime later, they met the Homunculus known as Greed. They became part of his gang that had a base in the Devil's Nest in Dublith.
Story[]
While in Dublith, Greed ordered Martel and the others to capture Alphonse Elric, a boy trapped in a living suit of armor. Alphonse evaded their capture with remarkable skill until Martel got inside his armor-body. She was able to use her own body inside to impede his movements. They chained him and took him back to the Devil's Nest. Martel stayed inside of his body to keep him in check. While there, she told Al about how she was made into a chimera.
As Al's brother, Edward, arrived, the hideout was attacked by military from Amestris. Roa and Dolcetto released Al's chains so he could take Martel and run as they fought of King Bradley. Martel tried to force her way out of Al, but he held her in to save her. She then tried manipulating Al's arm to kill Bradley for murdering her friends, but he pierced her through Al and killed her as well. It was her blood on Al's seal that awoken his experiences at The Gate.
Trivia[]
- Like Roa and Dolcetto, Martel is a brand of fine liquor.
- Martel's tattoo appears magenta in the 2003 anime while in the second series, it's green.
- Another minor change to Martel in the second series is her eye color being changed from green to blue.
- In both series, Martel was killed by King Bradley while inside Al's armor (the only difference is that the 2003 series, she willingly went inside to hide from him, while the 2009 anime shows her being forced to stay inside, both due to Roa and Dolcetto's orders and because Al hoped to protect her from Bradley, but also to try to keep her from doing something he himself would have regretted - taking another's life.)
- The 2003 anime shows a scene of her attempting to fight Bradley because she blames him for the deaths of her friends (also possibly because Bones studio wanted to redress that she didn't get to fight him in the manga), though she never stood a chance in either version.
- Although her age isn't specified, in the 2003 anime, she says "I'm actually old enough to be your [Edward's] mom." This could mean she was, at youngest, in her early thirties, although she could be and is most likely much older.
- Martel's abilities as a human fused with a snake are much greater in the 2003 anime, as she can use her arms in combat like a snake tail. In the 2009 anime, Martel only seemed to possess extraordinary flexibility and mobility.
