Martha Kaply, also known by her avatar Ruby Roundhouse, is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Bethany Walker) of the 2017 film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and the deuteragonist of it’s 2019 sequel Jumanji: The Next Level.
She is a shy bookworm, a tough student who isn't afraid to tell what she thinks to others, is the girl Spencer Gilpin loves and admires a lot, her feelings reciprocated at the end of the film. She ended up in detention for rudely insulting the gym teacher and then she's sucked up with her friends inside her Jumanji.
She was portrayed by Morgan Turner as a human, and by Karen Gillan (who also portrays Amy Pond in Doctor Who and Nebula in Marvel Cinematic Universe) as her avatar. She is then voiced by Inori Minase in Japanese Dub.
Personality[]
Martha is a brilliant student just like Spencer, but she is more courageous, determined, and sarcastic, she is not very good at talking to boys. She also has some moments of arrogance, she responds in a gruff and rude way when she thinks that things are not right for her, like with the gym teacher who tells her that sport is useless for a woman among men, also because she was unsure of her schoolwork. She doesn't even like getting tattoos, as she says that if her mother sees her wearing a tattoo of her she kills her.
During the adventure in the game, she proves very shy and with very little confidence and she learns to have a good relationship with others. In the end she, however, she proves confident in herself and is with Spencer.
In the sequel, she became popular in college and texted all of her friends. When it becomes clear that Spencer is not coming they go to her house and meet her grandfather Eddie Gilpin and Milo Walker, Martha has no problem getting back into the game to save Spencer, having grown braver and missed. Being Ruby Roundhouse as Spencer with Dr. Smolder Bravestone, she panics when she notices that Milo and Eddie are with them, with Spencer however she has maintained a good relationship and assures him that she will never leave him. With Jurgen the Brutal she was disgusted.
