Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility."
Spider-Man has declared that this article is still under construction. |
“ | Madam... I know you think you have it all figured out. But understanding that you don't is the first step toward growing up. | „ |
~ Martha to Becky Blackbell. |
“ | Ah, you see, it's the things that we don't understand that make us feel uneasy. I'm sure that's due to some animal instinct deep within us. So we convince ourselves that we do understand things we don't, in order to make ourselves feel better. 'The people of that country are just plain evil.' Or 'It's the elites doing as they please again.' And maybe it is that simple. And maybe it isn't. But latching on to such assertions and persuading yourself of their truths—that's a certain sort of weakness. And a dangerous one. Accepting that you don't know is every bit as important as trying to learn the truth. | „ |
~ Martha's advice to Becky. |
Martha Marriott is a supporting character in the Spy × Family series. She's a war veteran who currently serves as the butler to the Blackbell Family, a major family in the arms industry, as well as being a bodyguard for their daughter and heir, Becky. She's also the childhood friend and love interest of Henry Henderson.
She is voiced by Shoko Tsuda (who also voiced Izumi Curtis in Fullmetal Alchemist) in Japanese and Linda Leonard in English.
Appearance[]
In the present day, Martha is an old woman with white hair, who presents herself in a suit. Due to her employment at the Blackbells, she wears a necklace with a bell on it. In her youth, Martha was shown to have light brown hair.
Personality[]
Martha is a composed woman who reins in Becky's spoiled nature and offering guidance to her, resulting in Becky seeing her as a friend. While she was a butler to her father, he also saw her as a good friend, who sometimes restrains him when he goes overboard.
In her youthful school days, she became friends with the eccentric Henry; they'd have regular tea parties, and while often debated the morality of Ostania following more militaristic ends, they got along well. This friendship developed into love, but both were too nervous and afraid to pursue their feelings. As such, Martha enlisted into the military during the war, leaving on a sour note with the pacifist Henry. Even so, they maintained regular contact by letter, but the desire for secrecy drove military intelligence to redact a lot of information.
Despite falling in love with Henry, after seeing him being happily married to Lucia, Martha gave up her love and became a close friend to the married couple. This experience helped Martha sympathize with married couples as she advised Becky to not be a homewrecker.
Biography[]
Martha is introduced driving Becky to the Forgers' residence to pick up Anya for shopping. Despite Becky fantasizing about Loid after watching comedies, Martha jokingly chides her to not be a homewrecker.
Trivia[]
- Martha owns glasses, only wearing them on rare occasions like watching movies at the cinema.
