When J'onn J'onzz lost his family to a deadly invasion, he became the last Martian. After arriving on Earth to assist the heroes there against the invasion, he became known as John Jones as well as the superhero, the Martian Manhunter. He then went to Denver to start his career as a detective. He then began to study more about the Batman and Bruce Wayne, and he eventually found out they are one and the same when he read Batman's mind.
After the Batfamily stopped some crooks from stealing technology that belongs to Wayne Industries, John told Batman that there have been an unusual amount of shipments out from Wayne Industries. Batman took one of the crates the crooks tried to steal for inspection. He later checked Jones' records and found nothing before Denver. He then went to get answers personally. Batman caught John shapeshifting off-guard, so he revealed his true nature, a Martian. Batman tried to arrest him to ask him a few questions, but Manhunter escaped and fought Batman. The two then discussed their differences at a diner, and Jones warned Batman about the Joining. The two then defeated the robotic Lucius Fox replica and extracted the location of the real Lucius from it. The duo infiltrated Wayne Industries and freed Lucius, but they were too late, as the Joining begun its invasion. After the global threat was eliminated, J'onn later returned to Batman. Here, J'onn transported them to a space station where Batman was introduced to a new "league" of heroes. This league, consisting of Green Arrow, Hawkman, Green Lantern, Flash, J'onn and now Batman, is dedicated to saving the Earth against anymore global threats.
A year later, Manhunter assigned the first official meeting of the Justice League, and he even invited Superman, but he declined.
The Joining later returned, and with the help of Hugo Strange, kidnapped the powered members. When Batman and Green Arrow found them, the Joining stole the League's powers and gave them to androids. The heroes retreated to the tech lab underneath Wayne Industries. Batman revealed the contingency plans he prepared for the League. The heroes then fight the androids with their weaknesses and regain their powers by punching into the power cores. They then prepare for a final stand against the Joining. Manhunter entered the code to stop the Joining to Batgirl via Strange's mind, while the Dynamic Duo were defending them. Batgirl then finished the code and destroyed the Joining. The heroes went to celebrate victory in the Watchtower.
