Biography[]
1985-1990
Childhood in Walford After his birth in July 1985, Martin Fowler is brought home on 6 August. His christening is initially postponed due to a bout of gastroenteritis, but his grandmother Lou Beale is thrilled when he is finally christened Martin Albert Fowler.
1991–1996
Family Turmoil In 1993, Martin's mother, Pauline, discovers that his father, Arthur, has been having an affair with Christine Hewitt. In response, she bans Arthur from seeing Martin, though they eventually reconcile.
In 1995, Arthur is wrongfully imprisoned for theft. Upon his release in May 1996, he sustains a fatal head injury, leaving Martin, then just ten years old, devastated by the loss of his father.
1997–2002
Troubled Teen Years and Fatherhood As a teenager, Martin becomes involved in petty crime, including theft, burglary, and vandalism, which ultimately leads to his arrest.
He has a brief relationship with Nicky di Marco, but when she refuses to sleep with him, he later has a drunken encounter with Sonia Jackson, with whom he loses his virginity. Sonia later discovers she is pregnant and, in September 2000, gives birth to their daughter, Chloe Jackson. Unable to cope, Sonia decides to put Chloe up for adoption.
Martin's reckless behavior escalates when he takes drugs supplied by Nick Cotton. This prompts his brother, Mark Fowler, to take revenge, leaving Nick temporarily paralyzed.
2003–2007
Marriage to Sonia, Family Feuds, and Leaving Walford In 2003, Martin is sentenced to six months in prison for his role in the car accident that kills Jamie Mitchell.
After coming to terms with his brother Mark’s death, Sonia supports Martin, leading to his marriage proposal. The couple weds on 10 June 2004, but their relationship is soon tested when Martin unwittingly endangers their marriage by getting involved with Sarah Cairns.
Further tensions arise in 2005 when Martin’s mother, Pauline, secretly visits Rebecca Fowler (formerly Chloe) against Sonia’s wishes. Their marriage eventually collapses when Sonia has an affair with fellow student Naomi Julien. Following the death of Rebecca’s legal guardian, Martin is granted custody, and he and Pauline largely exclude Sonia from Rebecca’s life.
Martin and Sonia divorce on 17 October 2006, but immediately regret it and sleep together.
In 2007, Pauline's death shakes the family, and it is later revealed that Joe Macer was responsible. Despite this, Martin and Sonia reunite and, along with Rebecca and Pauline’s dog Betty, leave Walford on 2 February 2007.
By 2010, when Sonia returns for her sister Bianca Jackson’s wedding, she confesses to her mother, Carol Jackson, that her marriage with Martin is struggling.
2014–2019
Return to Walford, Romance with Stacey Slater, and Friendship with Kush Kazemi Martin returns to Walford on 19 February 2015 and, along with Stacey Branning and Kush Kazemi, discovers Nick Cotton's dead body.
He convinces his and Sonia’s daughter, Bex, to return to Walford, where she unveils her goth transformation.
During this time, Martin and Stacey's relationship deepens. He proposes, but Stacey declines marriage, instead agreeing to a commitment. Stacey later suffers an electric shock due to faulty wiring, leading Martin to threaten Lee Carter. Despite the scare, the couple remains strong and later welcomes their son, Arthur, though Martin is devastated to discover that Kush is Arthur’s biological father.
Despite challenges, Martin and Stacey marry on 20 May 2016. Their family grows when Stacey gives birth to their daughter, Hope Fowler, in October 2017.
In 2019, Martin’s world is turned upside down when Stacey has an affair with Max Branning. Feeling betrayed, he kicks her out and exposes the affair. He later tries to repair their marriage but ultimately gives up.
That year, Martin also becomes entangled in Phil Mitchell’s attack. When Stacey strikes Phil with a spanner, Martin is blackmailed by Ben Mitchell into helping Stacey leave Walford in exchange for his silence. Over the following months, Martin is forced into criminal activities under Ben’s orders.
On Christmas Day 2019, Ben orders Martin to kill Keanu Taylor, but a later flashback reveals that Martin fakes Keanu’s death with Linda Carter’s help.
2020–2025
Marriage to Ruby Allen and Family Struggles In September 2020, Martin is left for dead after being struck during a staged robbery orchestrated by Vinny Panesar to help Ruby Allen claim insurance. Despite this, Martin and Ruby marry while on holiday.
However, their relationship is rocky. On Christmas Day, Martin accidentally gives Stacey the wrong present, leading her to believe he still has feelings for her. They share a kiss, and Martin begins reconnecting with Stacey.
Ruby, feeling insecure, falsely claims she is pregnant. When Martin expresses his desire to have a child, Ruby fakes a pregnancy but is later stunned to discover she is actually expecting.
In 2021, Martin uncovers Ruby’s lies, realizing she orchestrated Stacey’s imprisonment. Furious, he reports her to the police for drug possession. Ruby, in retaliation, has Martin fired from her club, sells her house, and divorces him.
Now homeless, Martin moves in with Sharon Watts and her son Albie, maintaining regular contact with Stacey and their children.
