Martin Platt is a fictional character and major protagonist of the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street. He debuted on 28th January 1985 and became one of the show's central protagonists up until his departure in 2005 before later reappearing as a supporting protagonist in March 2018.

He was been portrayed by Sean Wilson.

History

Martin Platt arrived at Weatherfield in January 1985 as a high-school student who qualified for his GCSEs and would make a potential impression on the street as a well-mannered individual.

Upon settling himself in the street, Martin started dating his girlfriend Jenny Bradley and began working for her father Alan Bradley whilst also befriending his lover Rita Fairclough at the same time. They initially had a disagreement after Martin and Jenny went joyriding in a car towards Christmas 1986, but they later made amends with each other. However, on Jenny's sixteenth birthday in 1989, she and Martin walked in her house to find Alan attacking Rita and trying to kill her in a fit of rage after she discovered his illicit activities. Martin later comforted Jenny as Alan's campaign of terror ultimately led to his own death. Soon afterwards, the couple later broke up.

By then, Martin had been acquainted with Gail Porter ever since he comforted her after the death of her husband Brian Tilsley. Soon enough they got married and conceived a son named David, after which Martin adopted Gail's other children Nick and Sarah. For the next decade Martin settled with Gail and their family life as their son and her children grew up. In 2000, however, Martin had an affair with his colleague Rebecca Hopkins. He kept the affair secret from Gail when supporting her and Sarah following the latter's pregnancy at the age of 13. However, after Sarah gave birth to her daughter Bethany in the end, Martin confessed the affair to Gail and the couple divorced.

From then onwards Martin lived apart from Gail, but tried to remain on good terms with her with parental agreements with their children. He even supported Gail's new relationship with financial advisor Richard Hillman and befriended him. However, in 2003, Gail found out that Richard was a serial killer and broke up with him. Richard later kidnapped Gail and her children, along with Bethany, before trying to kill them by driving them into a canal. Martin rescued them and everyone survived except Richard, who drowned in the end.

Trivia

• The character has been described as the "only properly functional husband" of Gail, who had been married a total of five times by 2016.
• Martin Platt was originally intended to return to the show in late 2024 for a three month stint in order to tie in with the exit of Gail Platt, after Helen Worth decided to retire from the role after 50 years of service. Sean Wilson returned and filmed only a few scenes before his return was scrapped due to personal issues. Martin was originally intended to reunite with Gail and exit the show with her. The story was hastily rewritten and John Thompson returned in the role of Jesse Chadwick, a character he previously played from 2008 to 2010. He became Gail's new love interest to replace Martin's role.
