Biography[]

Marty first appears early in season five, as he is seen going to the office of Brett McLaren and removes a recording device from McLaren’s lamp. He is later seen shopping in a supermarket, when he bumps into a woman named Jenny, striking a conversation between the two that quickly leads to Marty asking her out to dinner. However, this is soon interrupted when he is arrested and taken into questioning over McLaren’s murder, although he is soon released as he was with his daughter at the time of McLaren’s death. Marty meets up with Jenny once again, where he explains to her that he’s on parole after getting arrested several years back for armed robbery, as he offered a job as a getaway driver after experiencing some financial trouble at the time, and seems somewhat relieved when Jenny isn’t fazed from this revelation. Marty is later confronted at his house by Dion Styles, the man responsible for McLaren’s murder, who warns him not to tell the police anything, otherwise he’ll come after Marty’s daughter, this is interrupted when they hear a knock on the front door, and Styles leaves just before Marty lets Jenny in. During dinner, he tells Jenny more about himself, how most of the jobs for his cleaning business are from his old contacts, as well as how he’s been slowly trying to rebuild his relationship with his daughter Emily, as she didn’t want to speak to him for 2 years after he was released from prison. Marty soon finds out from his daughter that Styles contacted her, prompting him to buy a gun and set up a meeting with Styles at his nightclub. When he gets there however, he is stunned to see Jenny there, who reveals herself to be an undercover cop named Angie Piper, and after a tense stand-off between the two of them, with Marty pointing his gun at Angie, she convinces him not to kill Styles by offering to help protect his daughter. They both then flee Styles’ nightclub before he arrives, and Angie tells Marty that his daughter is safe, but he’ll have to help her take Styles down. Marty then reveals to Angie that when he planted a bug in McLaren’s office, he also bugged Styles’ nightclub, and has a tape implicating Styles for McLaren’s murder. Angie later approaches Marty once again, where she tells him that he’ll need to work as an informant for her, pointing out that he doesn’t have a choice in the matter since he had her at gunpoint earlier.

Marty is later brought in by Angie to help her investigate drug importer Troy Thorpe, but he soon finds out from Angie that her sister Sam is Thorpe’s girlfriend and one of his drug couriers, and he agrees to help her in protecting Sam from getting arrested. However, Marty becomes concerned for Angie when Thorpe has one of his associates killed, and tries to reason with her to let the case go, but Angie refuses, telling Marty that she won’t stop until she knows her sister is safe. Marty later picks up Sam from the airport, and takes her to Angie, who takes the drugs off of Sam and helps her escape by giving her some money and a ticket to Madrid to flee the country, before Marty drives Angie to Thorpe’s place, helping to set up Thorpe’s arrest.

Sometime later, Marty is tasked with helping Angie and Peter Church take down his old armed robbery associate Bill Turner, with Angie undercover as Marty’s girlfriend. Marty soon becomes panicked when Brian Gray, without informing the Undercover unit, tries to force him to testify against Turner, but Marty manages to find some support from Angie, and the two begin a romantic relationship. After a couple of near-misses, Angie and Church are finally able to take down Turner when he tries to kill Marty.

Halfway through season five, Marty goes undercover with Angie in order to take down drug dealer Leo Goldman and his associate Denny Kaplan in a buy/bust. However, the deal is ruined when several men in ski masks arrive and steal the shipment. It is later revealed that Goldman's rival, Stevie Bennett is responsible robbing Goldman, but Church and Mac soon find Marty in contact with Bennett, and alert Angie to this. Marty is later confronted by Angie about his association to Bennett, which he tells her that he's been getting close to Bennett to try and set up a sting on him to help her out, and admits that he accidently told Bennett about Goldman's deal, he then tells Angie that he met with Bennett after the robbery to warn him to give Goldman's money back. Marty is then told by Angie that Goldman knows that there's a traitor in his organization, and she is pulling Marty out of the sting on Goldman, but Marty then tells Angie that Goldman is planning a larger drug shipment in the coming days, which Angie later relays this information to Mac. Marty then later informs Angie that the shipment is on hold until Goldman can find the traitor, prompting Church to go undercover as a corrupt Drug Squad detective to try and force Goldman to move the shipment, which Goldman agrees to on the condition that Bennett, who is now in police custody, is taken care of. Marty invites Angie over to his place shortly afterwards, where Marty tells Angie that he wants to marry her. Angie is taken aback by this, and is unsure of her answer, especially as she is a cop, and Marty is her informant. However, before Angie can answer, they are interrupted by Church, who tells Marty to try to convince Goldman into letting him know when the drug shipment is expected to arrive. Marty tries to speak to Goldman about the shipment, but is soon confronted by Kaplan, who managed to get a hold of Marty's phone records and his calls to Bennett, and Marty is on the verge of getting killed by Goldman and Kaplan when Church shows up, who saves Marty by lying to Goldman and Kaplan that he spoke to Bennett, who claimed that the traitor was a woman who was close to Goldman. This leads to Goldman suspecting that his girlfriend Chrissie Collins was the rat all along, and she is later killed by Goldman by injecting her with heroin and leaving her body near a beach. Marty is later confronted by a guilt-ridden Church, who blames Marty for Chrissie's death due to Marty being in contact with Bennett. However, Marty points out that neither he or Church are responsible for Chrissie's death, but Goldman is. Marty is later present when Goldman and Kaplan find out from Church that Chrissie is dead, prompting Kaplan to confront Goldman over her death, as Chrissie was having an affair with Kaplan behind Goldman's back, when Goldman finds out about this, he admits to murdering Chrissie with a hotshot, leading to Goldman and Kaplan facing off in a mexican standoff with their guns aimed at each other in front of Marty and Church, who has his gun aimed at Goldman, and shoots Goldman dead when he suddenly aims his gun towards Church. Kaplan is soon arrested when Angie arrives with police backup, but as Kaplan is only charged for illegally possessing a gun, he is quickly released. Marty and Angie soon have lunch together at the docks, where Angie admits that she was worried for Marty's safety when he was confronted the day before by Goldman and Kaplan, which Marty jokes that he's bulletproof. Marty is then told by Angie that she can no longer stand having Marty put in anymore danger, and wants him to quit working as her informant. Marty admits that he was lucky with Goldman and Kaplan, and when Angie tells him to choose either her or the informant job, he chooses Angie, before asking her once again to marry him, which she accepts.

Angie is later asked by Church to set up a meeting for him with Marty, and they meet at a pub, where Marty is surprised when Church asks him to find someone to scare off Kaplan after he begins to harass him and Danni Mayo, telling Marty that he owes him for keeping him safe from Goldman and Kaplan. However, Marty refuses Church’s request, telling him that he doesn't want to have any contact with the criminal world.

Marty is later forced by Church to help him take down notorious murderer Nigel Finster, causing tensions between Angie and the rest of the unit, who now know about her and Marty’s romantic relationship and engagement. Marty decides to try and ease the tension by giving Angie the name of one of Finster’s associates, who later gives up Finster, and he is arrested for conspiracy to murder. However, Finster is soon released when his associate is found dead in remand. Marty and Church soon find out that Finster had kidnapped Angie, prompting Marty to come up with a plan to rescue her. Marty is then later seen tied and gagged in the bonnet of Church’s car when he meets with Finster, as it seems that Church is handing him over to Finster in exchange for Angie. When Angie refuses to go with Church, Finster fires his gun at the car bonnet, seemingly killing Marty, before getting arrested when backup arrives. Angie then picks up a gun and aims it at Church, blaming him for Marty getting killed. However, suddenly Marty yells at Angie not to shoot, revealing himself to be alive as he gets out of the car and comforts her as she starts to break down to tears.

Marty is forced to go into witness protection following Finster’s arrest, as a bounty is placed over his head. He asks Mac if Angie is allowed to go with her, but she says not at the moment. However, Church manages to pull some strings to allow Marty and Angie to spend one last moment together before he goes into witness protection. Some time later, when Church is implicated in Denny Kaplan’s murder, Angie reveals to him that Marty told her before going into witness protection to let Church know to contact him if he gets into any trouble, prompting Church to reveal to Angie his conversation with Marty regarding scaring off Kaplan. They then track down Marty’s location, just in time to witness him being taken into an ambulance and sent to hospital. While in hospital, Marty notices Angie when she tracks him down, but she silently points out to him not to alert his bodyguards attention to her. Marty is later seen in his hospital room when Angie, Church, and Oscar Stone find him and realize that Marty’s bodyguards have abandoned him, meaning that about to be hit. Angie and Church then ask Marty if he had anything to do with Kaplan’s disappearance, which Marty tells them that following his conversation with Church, he placed Kaplan under surveillance by bugging his house, in case he tried to plan anything else against Church. He also revealed that after Church killed Kaplan, he cleaned up the crime scene and buried Kaplan’s body, before apologizing to Angie, saying they can’t be together. When Stone notices some suspicious behaviour outside the hospital ward, Marty is taken into another room by Angie while Church and Stone keep guard. They manage to stop Marty’s would-be assassin, but not before Stone is shot and killed. Some time later, it is revealed that Stig Enquist was responsible for ordering the hit on Marty. As of season six, Marty is still in witness protection and is never mentioned again after Enquist’s arrest.
