Mary Agnes, Better Known as "Squeak" is a supporting character in The Color Purple. She is biracial woman growing up in rural Georgia who is known to nkt talk much until she decides to leave for Memphis and using her real name
In the 1985 movie she is portrayed by Rae Dawn Chong and in the 2023 movie she is played by H.E.R. in her first movie role
Background[]
History
Shug became the lover of Harpo after Sofia left him and so she and Harpo ran hus newly established Juke Joint together. One night Sofia and her new lover come and Harpo decides to dance with Sofia. Squeak gets angry and so she slaps Sofia causing a fight to break.
She appears later during a Christmas scene where it's shown that she and Harpo have been taking care of Sofia's children wile Sofia was in jail even showing to be pregnant herself.
One of her most notable appearances in the film is when Celie stands up to Mister and decides to go to Memphis with Shug. This causes Squeak to go too and start going by her real name which is Mary Agnes.
She doesn't appear again until the very end of the movie where Celie gets reunited with her sister Nettie where Squeak is happy that Celie and her family are reunited.
Personality[]
Squeak was initially timid and wouldn't speak much and was nothing more than Harpo's lover. However, she gains confidence and moves to Memphis to make a name for herself becoming stronger and wiser person in the process
