Mary Poppins is the titular protagonist of the self-titled children's book series by P.L. Travers, the titular deuteragonist of the 1964 film of the same name, and the titular protagonist its 2018 sequel, Mary Poppins Returns. She has various magical powers to help around the lives of the young Banks children, Jane and Michael (the main protagonists of the 1964 film and the supporting characters in its 2018 sequel), especially with some help from her good friend, Bert.
She is played by Julie Andrews in the original (who won an Oscar for her role) who also played Maria von Trapp, Queen Lillian & Marlena Gru, and Emily Blunt in the sequel, who also played Juliet in Gnomeo and Juliet and its sequel and Tempest Shadow in My Little Pony: the Movie.
It is never explained where Mary really comes from or what kind of magical being she is, though she is seen sitting on a cloud above London near the beginning of the film. It is known that she has a friend named Bert, and an uncle named Albert (though it is unclear if he is her blood relative, as others call him that as well), who both live in London in 1910. She is described as being "practically perfect in every way."
As a nanny, she is fairly stern, but also kind and nurturing. In the book series on the other hand, she is shown to very vain and pompous, and refuses to admit her obvious magical abilities to the Bank's children.
Powers and abilities
She is shown to possess various magical abilities including the ability to speak to animals, telekinesis, the transport herself and others to various places and manipulate reality (including sidewalk pictures), animation, as well as flight with her umbrella. (similar to Peter Pan, just without Tinker Bell's pixie dust). She also owns an enchanted handbag, which is in fact much bigger than its appearance and keeps many of her large belongings inside it. However, afterward, she will deny any usage of these powers and her many voyages and adventures, presumably to keep them a secret from the public.
