Mash Burnedead is the titular main protagonist of the comedy and action fantasy manga series Mashle Magic and Muscles. He is a 15 years old first-year high school student of Easton Magic Academy, who aims to become a Divine Visionary in order to live a peaceful life. He stands out for being the only person that is unable to use magic, but despite this, he makes up for it with his might and muscles.
He was voiced by Natsuki Hanae in the 2021 promotional video, by Chiaki Kobayashi in Japanese and by Aleks Lee in English in the anime series.
Personality[]
“ | He's so obedient! I expected his teenage years to be rife with arguments and mood swings and rebellious streaks, but he's so amenable that I feel like I'm getting off easy. | „ |
~ Regro on his son, Mash. |
Mash is generally a kind and quiet boy who is often seen displaying little to no emotion and sporting a stoic, dispassionate expression regardless of his circumstances. However, if he sees someone hurting his family or friends, he gets incredibly angry.
He is also extremely innocent and obedient, which leads to him being abused and taken advantage of by others, but thanks to his strength he can twist out of almost every situation. Aside from his outright innocent thought process, he is incredibly blunt as he says things that would be considered rude to others, without a care in the world. He usually combines his bluntness with a sharp sense of wit. He firmly believes in his abilities so much so he downright told the headmaster himself he would "knock the stuffing out of [him]" with his fist. He makes this behavior even more evident throughout his school life, especially his encounter with Carpaccio Luo-Yang, in which he boldly stated that he never met anyone stronger than him with a look of boredom.
While he is blunt, Mash is open to finding a peaceful solution to conflict. He doesn't particular find fighting stronger opponents very exciting despite his incredible strength; he wishes he could simply live his life without worry and just go home.
Mash is shown to be very simple-minded and hates studying, having poor academic performance. Mash is unable to handle too much information at once and will overload.
History[]
Backstory[]
Mash was abandoned as a baby as he was born without magic. His father, Regro, found him in the night after attempting suicide. From that day on, Mash was raised by his father in an isolated forest due to fear of some finding them. Regro, wanting his son to protect himself from danger, made Mash undergo muscle training. After years of building up his body, Mash gained an unnatural level of superhuman abilities. One day, Mash was caught in the city during a trip to buy creampuffs. Since he did not have a black line on his face, it was discovered he had no magic, and he and his family were to be executed. But thanks to years of muscle training, Mash was strong enough to defeat the police. He accepted a deal that if he became Divine Visionary, he and his family could live in peace.
Easton Enrollment Arc[]
Mash is first seen finishing his daily weight training in the woods and eats a cream puff before heading home. When he arrives home, he accidentally breaks the door off it's hinges, saying that he couldn't remember if it was a push or a pull, so he just tried to force it. After his adoptive father Regro Burnedead is visibly annoyed at Mash's actions, he apologizes and says that he will fix it. However, his idea of fixing it is to push the door repeatedly into the frame. As the door is at the wrong angle, it breaks into three pieces after being slammed into the wall numerous times, causing Mash to apologizes again. After this, Mash asks his father why he has him work out all the time, however Regro does not answer, saying 'That's a story for another time.' He then leaves the house, reminding Mash never to go into the city and he says that he won't, but his promise is short-lived as he sees a flyer for Goblin Cream Puffs and heads into the city to buy some.
When he gets into the city, he sees people using magic for all sorts of things including, making food, serving drinks and cleaning people's feet. However, Mash is not impressed at all, saying 'Couldn't they just do all this stuff by hand.' He arrives at Goblin Cream Puffs and asks for seven of the special, but on his way there, he had managed to crush the coins that he had been holding. He bends them back into shape, freaking out the shopkeeper to the point of making him scream. Just as Mash is given his order, a gust of wind blows his hood down, causing people to see that he doesn't have a magic mark.
Mash starts to make his way home, eating a cream puff as he walks, but he bumps into a policeman named Terry. Terry starts to shout at Mash as his cream puff got all over Terry's clothes, so Mash rips the clothes off of Terry, telling him that he will wash them for him. This causes Terry to shout at Mash even louder, but as this happens, another policeman named Brad Coleman arrives and asks Terry what is happening. Brad recognizes Mash as the unmarked kid that had been reported earlier, but before he can do anything, Regro appears, grabs Mash and runs away.
When they arrive home, Regro shouts at Mash for not listening to him and going into the city. Mash apologizes and says that it won't happen again. After seeing that Mash feels bad and regrets what he did, Regro calms down and tells him to repeat his morning training routine as punishment. Before leaving, Mash gives Regro the rest of the cream puffs as a present. Shortly after Mash goes back into the woods, Brad, Terry and an unnamed third policeman smash through the wall and ask where Mash is. Mash finishes his training after five minutes and begins to head home, singing a song about cream puffs. When he gets to the door, he tries to remember if he has to push or pull and overhears Brad say 'You knew we'd come for the kid.' He stands by the door and hears Brad say that people who can't use magic should never have been born, and must be executed, so that there won't be more like them in the future. Regro shouts out, telling Mash to run away, however Mash doesn't listen, coming crashing through the door, knocking out the unnamed policeman. He then runs up to Terry and rips his shirt off again, causing him to stand still in confusion. He then proceeds to slap Terry in the face countless times. Regro asks why Mash didn't run away, to which he responds 'Because we're family. You're all I've got.' He then says that '[He] might as well send you guys to hell.' A statement that Brad finds funny, as he believes it is impossible for someone without magic to defeat him. Brad casts the spell 'Nalcompas' and fires it at Mash, but he easily deflects it. This shocks Brad as he had previously used the spell to run off a dragon. He then casts a more powerful spell, but Mash easily deals with that one as well. Brad fires a barrage of spells at Mash, but he deals with them in a variety of ways, including juggling them and treating them like a football. He then picks up Regro's wand and throws it at Brad, cutting his cheek as it sticks into the wall. This act causes Brad to fall to the floor in shock. Mash then says 'Threaten my family again, and I'll kill you.' Brad begins to laugh and says 'That was good.', proposing a deal to Mash. He says that as long as Mash does what he asks, he will let Mash and Regro live in peace. Brad explains that they live in a very religious country, and that once every year, a student is selected to become a Divine Visionary. He says that all Mash needs to do is enroll in a magic school and become a Divine Visionary. He tells Mash that he just wants the prestige and money that come along with the title, and that he has got no choice but to accept, as if they refuse, the police will not stop chasing them until they are caught. Mash agrees to the deal and says that he just wants to be able to live in peace with his father, and that if the world won't accept that 'then I've got no choice but to crush it... with my fist.'
Mash attends the Easton Magic Academy entrance exam and trains while he is waiting for it to start, this catches the eye of the teacher that is in charge of the exam, Claude Lucci. Mash then starts to read a fitness book and pretends to sit on an invisible chair, causing Lucci to believe that he is not taking this seriously, and that he won't even make it past the first round. Lucci appears in front of the students, emerging from a wall of fire, in an attempt to impress the students, which works on most of them. However, Mash is not impressed at all, saying 'You must think you're hot stuff, appearing out of a firestorm and all.' This comment angers Lucci, who says that he will make sure that Mash fails. He says that it is time for the first round to begin, as he makes tables appear from out of the ground and the test papers to fly down from the sky. Mash then questions why he hadn't just set everything up before they all arrived, angering Lucci even further.
Lucci says that as there is only a pass rate of three percent, there is no way that Mash will pass. The first exam consists of a test paper with moving words. However, this does not pose a problem to Mash as he asks it to stop moving and it does. He hands the paper to Lucci, who is shocked that Mash actually managed to pass the test. After that, Mash somehow manages to find a way to complete each test without using magic, which annoys Lucci, as he believes that Mash is trying to mock him. He then makes a large maze appear and says that they must make it out of the maze to pass the test, however there will be countless traps trying to stop them. Shortly after the test begins, Mash is approached by Lemon Irvine, who asks if she can stay with him, saying that it would make sense to work together to get out of the maze. After the two start to make their way through the maze, Lemon proves to be very clumsy, constantly falling over and falling victim to traps. Mash questions how this is efficient and begins to run off, but Lemon casts 'Levios Cuffus', causing shackles to appear around Mash's hands and feet. This causes Mash to the floor and ask 'Why'd you do that?' Lemon apologies for deceiving Mash, but says that she has a very personal reason for keeping Mash from getting to the goal. Mash asks what the reason is, but Lemon refuses to tell him. Lemon says that no human can break the shackles, but Mash breaks them, saying that he also has a very personal reason for why he needs to pass. He runs off, leaving Lemon behind, who is almost immediately confronted by a large Spinx. As the Spinx goes to attack Lemon, she calls out for help, and Mash appears punching it in the face, knocking it out. Lemon asks why Mash would come back to help her, and he responds by saying that her personal reason might be like his and that he felt bad for her. She says that as he came back, neither of them will make it to the goal in time, however Mash begins to smash through the walls of the maze, making it to the the goal just in the nick of time, annoying Lucci, who believed that Mash had failed. However, he impresses Wahlberg Baigan, the Headmaster of Easton Magic Academy who was watching the exam.
After the other students see this, they see it as cheating and start to shout at Mash, telling him to go home. Mash says that he wishes that he could. The students continue to shout at Mash, but Lemon tells them that it was not his fault, as she was told to slow him down by Lucci, who said that he would let her pass if she caused him to fail. She accepted the deal as she comes from a poor family and is desperate to get into Easton. Lucci says that it shouldn't matter that he tried to set up Mash as it is his exam and he should be able to fail whoever he wants. He also says that Easton is a presigous school, and Mash is clearly a commoner. He says that he is failing both Lemon and Mash, unless they want to challenge his decision, drawing his wand. Mash runs up to him and snaps his wand in half, saying 'That was uncalled for professor.' This causes the students to mutter to each other in pure shock, but they are swiftly silenced by Wahlberg, who says that they will be moving onto the final interviews and that he will be taking charge of the exam. Lucci asks why and Wahlberg responds by saying that he wishes to see him in his office when he is finished.
Mash is picked to be the first student to take the final interview and is transported inside of a large hall. Wahlberg asks why Mash chose to enroll at the school, to which Mash says that he wants to be able to live in peace with his family. The others that are present say that this is not a sufficient answer, but Wahlberg says that it is. Wahlberg then asks why Mash stopped to save Lemon, even though he has running out of time. Mash explains that if he didn't, he would later regret it. Wahlberg finds amusement out of this answer, saying that Mash is the type that acts before thinking. He then asks Mash if he ever considered that he wouldn't be able to defeat the Spinx or break the wall and Mash replies by saying that even if he couldn't, he still had to try. Wahlberg says that this shows that Mash does not understand how the world works as there are many creatures that are more powerful than him. He says that he wonders what Mash would do if he were to oppose someone or something far stronger than him, asking him what he would do if he were to face him. Asks he says this, he releases his magic, causing a large black creature, covered in mouths, to appear between them. The creature is holding a lever, that is attached to a blade that is suspended above a doll. Mash asks what is going on, and Wahlberg explains that this spell transfers the target's most cherished person into the doll. He says that it is an ancient spell, and he is the only person in the entire country that is capable of casting it. He then explains that if he was to put the knife into the doll, the soul would never be able to return to it's owner. Wahlberg says that he is immensely more powerful than Mash, and begins to lower the knife, asking Mash what he will do. Mash puts his hands below the blade and resists it, saying that all he needs to do is outlast Wahlberg. After seeing this, Wahlberg says that Mash embodies the qualities that they look for at Easton Magic Academy. He proceeds to apologize to Mash, saying that he didn't intended to cause any harm, as this was indeed a test. Mash says that there is no need to apologize and answers Wahlberg's question, saying that if he needed to face off against him, 'I'd knock the stuffing out of you... with my fist.' Wahlberg is shocked upon hearing this, but then chuckles, saying 'I welcome you... to Easton Magic Academy.'
Later on, Mash arrives at a forest with his class where he meets Dot Barrett. Dot immediately says that he dislikes Mash after he sees him talking to Lemon, saying that he hates guys who get attention from women. The teacher then reveals why they are there, saying that they will need to defeat Forest Scorpions, large scorpions that hold gems in their foreheads. These gems will then be exchanged for bronze or silver coins, depending on their size. Before entering the forest, Mash clashes with Silva Iron, a boy who is in the year above Mash and whom Lance Crown says is infamous for his nasty nature. Shortly after they enter the forest, Mash and Dot run into Silva. Silva challenges Dot to take five hits, and if he does and stays standing, he will give him a silver coin. He accepts the offer, and says that he will also take five hits for Mash. He takes some of the hits, but is unable to stand. This causes Mash to challenge Silva, saying that he will hit Silva ten times. However, after two hits, Mash says that he feels bad for Silva and stops. While confronting Silva, Mash knocks out a large scorpion, giving him another two silver coins and gets an additional silver coin from Silva, giving him five in total. He puts them together and it becomes a gold coin.
Powers & Abilities[]
Physical Abilities & Fighting Style[]
Muscles Magic (マスクルズ 魔法, Masukuruzu Mahō): Mash was born without a magic mark, so he cannot cast spells. Instead, he uses muscle-based techniques to compensate for his lack of magic power. Through his impressive control over his own muscles, Mash is capable of clenching his abdominal muscles to prevent potential blades in his body from being taken out.
The feats he accomplishes with his non-magical techniques are impressive enough to make people believe he's actually using magic. Mash's control over his muscles increased further after his training with Meliadoul Amy, allowing him to perform even greater feats, such as stopping Doom's blade with his ocular muscles, by clenching his eyelids.
- Hamstring Magic: Big Bang Dash: A "Spell" that allows him to move at Superhuman speeds.
- Triceps Magic: Ballista Knuckle: A Punch capable of smashing through solid Iron.
- Erector Spinae Magic: Hell Fall: Mash grabs the enemy, flips them around and pile drives them into the ground.
- Quadriceps Magic: Guillotine Kick: Mash buries the enemy up to their neck by grabbing them from below and dragging them down, then winds up and kicks them in the face.
- Shoulder Magic: Missile Throw: Mash throws an object with incredible force.
- Deltoid Magic: Barbarian Punch: A downward punch.
- Full Muscles Magic: Hurricane Rush: Mash twists his body and folds his right hand into a fist. He then pushes forward and pummels his opponent with a series of blows that sends them slamming into walls.
- Unlimited Physical Mode (アンリミテッドフィジカルモード, Anrimiteddo Fijikaru Mōdo): Classified as Full Muscles Magic. Mash removes his wrist weights, unleashing his true muscle strength. In this form, Mash becomes fast enough to create afterimages of himself.
- Unlimited Hammer (アンリミテッドハンマー, Anrimiteddo Hanmā): Mash strikes down his opponent with both arms.
- Punch Squared (スクアッドパンチ, Sukuaddo Panchi; Lit. Squared Punch): Classified as Unlimited Biceps Magic. While in his Unlimited Physical Mode, Mash punches a target twice then repeatedly punches them with the number of punches each turn is the last amount squared.
- Weakness Mode (ウイークネス モード, Uīkunesu Mōdo): A "state of perfect lethargy". In this mode, Mash is able to utilize the contraction of his muscle fibers. This allows his body to become as flimsy as paper, making it extremely difficult to hit. It is even able to avoid Doom's attacks at 100% power. The greater the gap between contraction and a state of rest, the greater the kickback. Doom says it is a flawless state of offense and defense.
- Gaia Burst (ガイアバースト Gaia Bāsuto): Classified as Finger Extensor Magic. An extremely powerful flick that is even capable of dispersing dark magic. The technique is named after Gaia, the greek primordial goddess of the earth.
- Divine Punishment (天誅 Tenchū; Lit. Heaven's Punishment): Mash adopts a starting position and starts to run at an inhuman speed and then throws a powerful punch right into his opponent's face.
- Galaxy Crash (ギャラクシー・クラッシュ, Gyarakushī Kurasshu): Classified as Whole Body Magic. Mash performs a powerful suplex on a target, crushing the ground underneath.
Sports Expert: Mash is incredible knowledgeable of many techniques used in different kinds of sports, such as feints. He also knows how to perform advanced gymnastic techniques. He utilises those skills in tandem with his Iron Wand, giving him an edge in battle.
Immeasurable Strength and Speed: Mash possesses a truly insane amount of physical power where he is able to lift extremely heavy weights with immense speed in many different ways and block powerful magic spells by simply swiping his hand. He can also throw objects at high speed and power with excellent accuracy. Mash is inhumanly strong even with his wrist weights on, which prevent him from using his full strength. At full power, Mash becomes fast enough to generate afterimages with his movements. Mash became immensely more powerful after undergoing muscle training in a mindscape guarded by an enigmatic god, who seemingly transferred all the effort to Mash's physical body.
- Flight: Another feat of Mash's inhuman speed and muscle strength is the ability to "fly" by moving his legs fast enough to propel him mid-air. He originally did this while holding a broomstick between his legs to make everyone think he could actually ride one.
- Fire Generation: Mash is able to create a firestorm by rubbing a stick against the ground with great speed, intensity and friction.
- Tornado Generation: By breakdancing, Mash is able to create a tornado that forces air directly upwards using the full strength of his muscles to intensify the air pressure.
- Lung Control: Using the power of his lungs, Mash is able to suck in specific objects by taking a deep breath or shoot small projectiles at the speed of a bullet by spitting. He can also hold his breath for long periods of time to survive underwater.
Immense Durability: Mash's body is extremely durable, capable of taking much more damage than normal humans. His durability is even greater than that of a goddess as seen in his battle against Carpaccio Luo-Yang. It was revealed that Innocent Zero created him as a body to withstand enormous magic capacity.
Immense Endurance: In addition to his offensive power, Mash possesses incredible endurance, able to keep on fighting, despite severe injuries. He is able to continue his fight with Domina Blowelive despite having a large piercing wound on his torso, which was inflicted to him by the latter. Astonishingly, Mash is capable of moving around and launching a kick at a target even after having his heart ripped out of him, albeit only for a short duration of time.
Inhuman Reflexes: Mash can react to spells and any other attack at extreme speed. By touching a wall behind him, Mash is able to perceive Margarette Macaron's movements by taking advantage of the fact, that the sound that they generate travels faster from the ground to the wall behind him, ultimately allowing him to dodge their attack. According to Kaldo Gehenna, to pull off such a feat would require otherworldly reflexes.
Inhuman Senses: During his fight with Doom, Mash demonstrated his incredible senses as he weighed Doom and his mirrors clones in order tell which one was real.
Equipment[]
- Iron Wand: Mash's "Wand" is an extremely heavy iron rod-like wand. According to a wand shop owner, not in a thousand years has anyone with strength or Magic, been able to lift it. Mash is able to forcibly change the shape of his wand with his incredible strength.
- Tennis Racket
- Cue Stick
- Baseball Glove
- Baseball Bat
- Bucket
