A drop of knowledge, is more powerful than a sea of force.
~ Master Fung

Master Fung is the major supporting character in Xiaolin Showdown and Xiaolin Chronicles.

He is voiced by the late Rene Auberjonois in the first season and by Maurice LaMarche in the next two seasons of Xiaolin Showdown. He is also voiced by Michael Donovan in Xiaolin Chronicles.

Overview[]

Xiaolin Showdown[]

Master Fung is a Xiaolin Master. He lived in the Xiaolin Temple alongside Dojo and an orphan monk and the dragon of water named Omi prior to the series until Raimundo Pedrosa, Kimiko Tohomiko and Clay Bailey arrived as the three other monks to become the dragon of wind, the dragon of fire and the dragon of earth respectively.

Throughout the series, Master Fung often makes the four Dragons do very difficult tasks encouraging teamwork; in one teamwork exercise, he gave the monks the task to pull a huge rock up a cliff. He is sometimes seen meditating with other members of the Temple. Additionally, Master Fung teaches the Monks on a daily basis and acts as their mentor. He is also known for using sayings that no one else understands (not even Dojo).

Xiaolin Chronicles[]

The series begins a year after the previous series, with Master Fung re-introducing Omi, Kimiko, Raimundo and Clay and their respective elements while they are training. Master Fung approaches them and informs them that they must choose an apprentice, now that they are Shoku Warriors. The decision has to be unanimous, and Omi begins drilling the candidates. He invents a numbering system so that they won't have to remember all of their names. In the training field, a candidate who calls himself Ping Pong is running around, searching for the bathroom. After the newcomer finds the bathroom, he introduces himself to the Shoku Warriors, and Omi takes an immediate liking to him.

Inside, Master Fung tells the candidates the story of the Shen Gong Wu, and the battle between Dashi and Wuya. Dashi won the battle and trapped Wuya in a spring (to which Dojo thought that Wuya was trapped by the puzzle box after the final fight), and Ping Pong is extremely fascinated with the story. Dojo suddenly gets a rash that gets on the projector, and scares all the monks away except Ping Pong, who then wants to know all of Omi's stories against evil.

Suddenly, in the next episode, Chase Young and Shadow invade the temple. Master Fung challenges Chase to a battle, but is easily defeated. Omi, Dojo and Ping Pong attempt to fight Chase and Shadow but are easily defeated as well, with Omi and Ping Pong blacking out from the fight. Chase sets the temple on fire, wrecked it and everyone narrowly evade the flames.

The next morning, everyone sees that the temple is rubble. After officially naming Ping Pong as their new apprentice and friend, Master Fung tells the monks to begin their own journey and to defeat the Heylin Empire and make sure that they move into a new temple before the flu season starts, and with that, Master Fung vanishes out of sight while Omi wonders what will lies in store for their journey.

Physical Appearance[]

Master Fung is a bald man with a mustache, a goatee, and long thick eyebrows. He wears a white shirt under a short-sleeve blue shirt that he wore open, revealing a medallion around his neck in between the shirt. Over his white shirt he has 3 curly chest hairs near his neck.

Personality[]

Master Fung usually offers guidance with confusing phrases to the monks. As the Xiaolin Master as well as an martial arts teacher, it's a given that he is extremely tough on the four Dragons when it comes to training, but can be quite gentle where they need some genuine advice. Likewise, Master Fung accepts the ways of things, and hardly ever battles unless absolutely necessary, though when he does fight he is rarely matched by his opponents, even when incapacitated on a wheelchair after being brought back from the Ying-Yang World. He is very wise and knows things about the young monks they did not even discover about themselves.

While he is very serious most of the time, Master Fung is not above cracking jokes at the expense of his students. He rarely ever showed a loss of control, only showing panic in the most dire of situations, such as when Mala Mala Jong became active. While normally a very patient man, Master Fung's patience was at times tested by the habits and eccentrics of his pupils, which he would often punish through chores or difficult lessons.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Cloud Transportation: Master Fung could use the clouds as a form of transportation or teleportation, able to disappear behind them and appear at any place he wanted, or simply ride them to transport himself.
  • Telepathetic Cloud: Master Fung could create a telepathetic cloud that could turn his thoughts into pictures.

Abilities[]

  • Master Martial Artist: Master Fung was an exceptional martial artist, and he passed his knowledge to the Xiaolin Monks. He was able to defeat all the monks at the same time and almost overcame Mala Mala Jong and Chase Young by using his martial arts. Likewise, at one point of the series, Master Fung was able to take on the entirety of Chase Young's cat minions single-handedly.

Relationships[]

The Monks[]

Master Fung is the monks' Xiaolin teacher and benefactor, as he views the other monks as close as his own children.

Dojo[]

Main article: Dojo Kanojo Cho

Master Fung and Dojo Kanojo Cho are very close, and are rarely apart from one another. Fung often relies on Dojo's assistance in everyday activities, such as training or Shen Gong Wu hunting, while also acting as his closest personal confidant. Dojo in turn shows a deep reverance and personal affection for Master Fung, often to the point of the latter's frustration as he can grow quite jealous and possessive at times.

Master Fung and Dojo's relationship resembles the one shared by the latter and Grand Master Dashi during his lifetime, implying Dojo often grows close to whoever maintains the position of Grand Master.

Omi[]

Main article: Omi (Xiaolin Showdown)

Master Fung took Omi in and raised him since infancy, and made him the Dragon of the water. In turn, the orphan monk looks up to him and they are often together.
