Master Yi, also known as The Wuju Bladesman, is a heroic playable character in the multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends.
He grew up in the Wuju Village of Ionia, where he was one of the most proficient and skilled Wuju practitioners. When the Noxian Empire invaded Ionia, a chemical bomb destroyed Wuju and killed all of the villagers, with Yi being the only survivor. He initially faced a struggle with all of Wuju resting on his shoulders, until a vastaya named Wukong inspired him to embrace the techniques of Wuju once more.
He is voiced by Micha Berman. In the Japanese dub, he was voiced by the late Keiji Fujiwara.
Biography[]
Yi hails from Wuju, a hidden Ionian village located in the mountains of Bahrl, which was home to practitioners of the eponymous martial art Wuju. Yi's parents were both swordsmiths, and the young boy made an impression of the villagers who visited his parents' shop. He sparred with his mother in the day and recited poetry with his father at night. He was later approved to study the art of Wuju, which made his parents proud.
With the teachings of his sensei Doran, Yi surpassed expectations and gained the title of the "young master". He wandered across Ionia and wished to visit the other cities, but his masters forbade him as Wuju Village was better off isolated and away from conflict, preventing outsiders from knowing its true nature.
One day, the forces of Noxus invaded Ionia to conquer it. Yi chose the safety of Ionia as a whole over Wuju's traditions, so he left the village to fight the invaders using his Wuju techniques. His one-man skill inspired several of his fellow Wuju disciples to join him in fighting, which in turn caused Noxus to see Wuju as a threat that could not be ignored. They found out where the village was and released a chemical bomb (made by the Zaunite scientist Singed) which completely annihilated the village and killed all of the Wuju practitioners. Yi was the only survivor, but was left with complete grief with everyone he knew dead in a single day, and had the entirety of Wuju on his shoulders.
Yi struggled with the burden until he met a determined monkey vastaya who was eager to learn Wuju. Every time Yi beat him, he came back over and over, with a new trick every time. Yi began to react and improvise, feeling the spirit of Wuju once more. In the end, the vastaya proved to be worthy enough to be Yi's disciple, so he gave him a staff and gave him the new name Wukong.
Together, they now travel the First Lands, as Yi seeks to honor the legacy of his lost home, allowing him to fully embody the “master” in his name.

- Master Yi's in-game dance animation has its speed change depending on the champion's own movement speed. He shares this distinction with Rammus.
