So long as people are the way they are, the fighting won't ever stop. We're soldiers. Whether people call it wartime or peacetime, we keep fighting for our country.
~ Matthew McMahon to Zeb
People who see war as just another way to make a buck... Ostania would be better off without them... I'd expect more foresight from a businessman. Take a moment to reflect on that as you're being eaten by the sharks.
~ Matthew McMahon confronting the Assassin Leader, ironically foreshadowing his eventual demise.

Matthew McMahon also known as The Director is a supporting character in the Spy × Family series. He's the Director of Policy of the Berlint City Hall who's secretly a high ranking member of the Garden assassin organization. He usually serves as Yor Forger's main contact at the City Hall and will sometimes even join her in certain missions.

He was voiced by Kenyu Horiuchi, who also voiced Raiden in the Metal Gear series, Wilhelm van Astrea in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, Tobirama Senju in Naruto and Kin'emon in One Piece and Bill Jenkins in English

Appearance[]

Matthew is a tall, thin elderly man with a long face. He has narrow eyes and gray hair parted down the middle.

He dons a black suit with a blue tie, reflective eyeglasses, and a ring on his left ring finger.

Personality[]

Matthew is a no-nonsense and straightforward individual who takes his job as an assassin very seriously. He sees himself and other assassins like him as "soldiers and nothing more" and is very professional and dedicated to his work. He usually remains calm and collected, even during his kills, with him only exhibiting mildly exasperation whenever his cover is in danger of being blown. Matthew, much like other characters in the series, also has a disdain for war and believes Ostania would be better off without those who start it for finantial gain

Matthew is notably very stoic and prefers to hide his emotions, with him even advising Yor to put hers away during her mission in order to stay focused. Despite this, Matthew is shown to be compassionate with her and recognizes how important her bond with her family is, showcased when he allowed her to go enjoy her vacation with them after the Princess Lorelei's mission.

Powers & Skills[]

Enhanced Strength: Matthew demonstrated his strength by effortlessly picking up and throwing the corpses of fully-grown adults off the cruise ship using just one hand. He can also break an assassin's arms and legs with ease and was able to pierce Knockman's hands with throwing darts.

Enhanced Durability and Endurance: Despite his seemingly frail structure, Matthew has showcased great durability and endurance. He survived an intense blow from the Swordsman's hilt that sent him crashing into a wall. Though it left him temporarily unconscious and mildly wounded, he was able to recover and quickly land a shot on the Assassin Leader before he could shoot Yor.

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Matthew displays great speed and reflexes. He was able to swiftly dodge a knife swung by an assassin and disabled him just as quickly, leaving a wind trail behind him as he did so. In addition to blocking an attack using a broom, he was able to dodge a close-up sword strike just as fast as Yor. Additionally, he was able to dodge a stab from behind while cleaning up blood.

Weapons: It seems that Matthew prefers to use mostly firearms, including a sniper rifle which he wields with great proficiency. He was able to kill three opponents in quick succession without a reaction from any of them. In close-quarters combat, he relies on a silenced gun. However, it is assumed that he periodically uses cold weapons, such as throwing darts, as well as knives, which were seen in his briefcase. On one occasion, he also has used a broom to defend himself.

Cleaning: Like Yor, Matthew has expert cleaning skills. During their battle with the assassins, Matthew brought along a broom and bucket to clean up blood from Yor's fight and quickly managed to keep the deck of the ship clean after their kills. By the end of their fight with the assassins, Matthew was able to keep the deck spotless.

Trivia[]

  • Given how Matthew is referred to by the Assassin Leader as "an old soldier with old ideals" and how he himself proudly calls himself a soldier, it's very likely that he might have been a former soldier who fought in the Ostanian-Westalian war, which might explain his disdain for the concept of war in general.
  • Tatsuya Endo has stated that he initially gave Matthew McMahon a generic "old man" design as he believed he wouldn't have a major role in the story. After this proved otherwise, especially given events of the Cruise Adventure arc, Endo has expressed regret on not having worked on his design properly.
