Matthis is a supporting character of the Fire Emblem franchise. He is a cavalier of the Macedonian army, enlisted against his will, before becoming a part of the Archanean League after encountering his sister Lena in battle. As part of the Archanean League led by Prince Marth of Altea, he joins Marth in battle against the tyrannical dragon Medeus, and retires after he is defeated. He is seen soon after fighting for Macedon against his will, but quickly rejoins Marth after Julian urges him to rescue Lena, who has been kidnapped, and stays to end the War of Heroes to stop Medeus for good after his resurrection by Gharnef.
In Fire Emblem Heroes, he is voiced by Reiō Tsuchida in Japanese, who also voiced Arthur, and by Sterling Sulieman in English
Personality[]
Matthis is deeply devoted to protecting his younger sister Lena, and cares more for her well-being than anything else. He makes it no secret how much he loves Lena, as his devotion to her fuels his agitation when she is kidnapped by Gharnef, making his love seem ambiguously obsessive. He even tells Kris that he wouldn't mind if he/she married Lena since it would mean she would be safe. This, along with him asking Lena about her love life upon being recruited shows that he is more interested in her finding love than finding it himself. It also implies that Matthis sees himself as less than Lena, since he at first assumes that someone has taken her heart because she allegedly has always been the more reliable sibling.
Despite this, he is a coward who cares more for his own well-being than fighting for the greater good. Lena chastises him for this, which prompts a response that indicates a sense of honor, with Matthis saying that he would rather die as one of the dashing than the dastardly. Once the War of Shadows is over, Matthis leaves the army to live a mundane life that he strangely enjoys. This is predictable since he tells Lena that he only joined Macedon because they threatened to kill him if he did not comply, and that he hates violence. After the start of the next war, Matthis is shown as part of the Macedonian Army again, and only fights for the side of good when Julian offers to fight alongside him to rescue Lena. While Matthis himself says how much he dislikes violence both times he is recruited in the game, one can conclude that Matthis is a dirty coward who prefers living a boring life because of how cowardly he is, and will only risk his life when Lena is involved. Otherwise, he will fight for whatever side is safest to fight for at any moment.
His self-deprecation to Lena hints insecurity, which is possibly him being aware of his cowardice. However, he does not make any attempt to get better, leaving the job of rescuing Lena to Kris after he gives up training for her sake. If killed, Matthis will desperately ask Lena to forgive him for being such a fool, even if Lena is nowhere near him. Matthis is easily frightened, and is thus paranoid. He immediately cowers before Marth, but quickly realizes not all aristocrats are cut from the same cloth. He is also weary of thieves, telling Julian that Lena is off-limits because of his life as a thief, but is quickly fooled into thinking that Julian wants to rescue Lena because he is a good person and not that he is in love with her. Overall, Matthis is a good person whenever it is safe for him to be, but this is offset by his paranoia. He is reluctant to fight for the side of good, but realizes that he would rather die honorably than as a fool. However, he consistently fails to improve, making his death quote "Lena... Forgive your... fool of a brother..." very accurate.

- Even though he enters battle stating how much he wants to see Lena, before he is recruited, Matthis will kill Lena if she has the lowest HP within his movespace, reminding the player about gameplay and story segregation.
- His aggressive AI however, which is not typical for enemies fighting against their will, is actually true to the story, as it reflects Matthis being a dirty coward who cares more for his personal safety than righting wrongs. For the most part, the gameplay in this game is fairly true to the story, and Matthis being able to kill Lena is an inconsistency that was never decided to be fixed.
- In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, the remake for the Nintendo DS, his in-game stats have his luck at 0 when he is first recruited. This possibly alludes to him being extorted into joining the Macedonian army and his lack of fulfillment in life.
