Mavis is a diesel engine, who works in the quarry in TV show, Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends.

In the English dub of the CGI series, she was voiced by Teresa Gallagher. In Japanese, she was voiced by Ryō Horikawa, Nao Nagasawa, Yuka Shioyama and Sakura Yoshioka.

Biography[]

When she first came to Sodor, she used to be feisty, arrogant, tomboyish, and very stubborn, and used to be full of her own ideas, and would shunt Toby's trucks where ever she would like, much to Toby's dismay. He tried to reason with her, but she was still being stubborn, until she got in trouble by getting stuck at the Ffarquhar crossing, thanks to some bad advice from Diesel. Toby thought she could take care of herself, until his driver told him she was supposed to stay at the quarry, so Toby decided it would be best to help Mavis after all. After Toby helped her, she was left very embarrassed and angry. After being punished by her manager, Mavis was still stubborn and ignored advice. She planned to use the teeniest bit of Toby's line to save herself from this bother and planned to use the trucks to bump her on Toby's line. But it backfired when the trucks bumped Toby instead and he almost fell off a broken bridge into an abyss. Mavis, now horrified, helped Toby to safety. Mavis confessed, but Sir Topham Hatt and her manager were proud of her for being honest and for saving Toby and now that she learned her lesson, her reward was to come down branchline and help out. Now Mavis is a happy, honest, reliable, hard-working and friendly diesel who shows respect for the steam engines, which she loves, but she still is a tomboy. She occasionally makes mistakes, but knows how she can fix them, and is there when any engine needs her the most.

Mavis currently works in the quarry still, but in later appearances she is shown to be doing odd-jobs around the island. She is also very mature and strict, as shown when she looks out for Bill and Ben and scolds them whenever they misbehave or when she orders Gordon to have his buffers fixed, or how she yells at Percy for being on the wrong track when he crashes some trucks into her. She is also shown to be empathetic and attempts to comfort those who are in distress, like when she comforted Salty when he becomes homesick for the docks or when Dart is missing his best friend Den.

Trivia[]

  • Mavis is based on a BR Class 04 0-6-0 fitted with additional cowcatchers and side-plates so that she can run near public roads.
  • Mavis is one of few characters to be used to shunt, push and pull trucks for locations to create the illusion of business.
  • Mavis' brake pipe is swapped from the right side (its position in The Railway Series) to the left in the television series.
  • Mavis used to be one of the characters to appear in every series of the television series since her introduction until the twenty-second series, in which she did not appear in any episodes or any of the following series.
  • Mavis' Series 3 horn sound is actually a stock recording of a British Rail (BR) Class 20.
  • Mavis' current horn sound is actually a stock recording of a “Canadian” Nathan K3L diesel.
