Maxim, Ognian (or "Oggie"), and Dimo are a trio of supporting protagonists in the print-and-web comic Girl Genius by Phil & Kaja Foglio.
They are three Jägermonsters who were split off from the main pack, with the task of finding the lost Heterodyne heir. In the comic, they find their heir in the form of Agatha Heterodyne and join Agatha in her various adventures.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
All three of them were born around 300 years before the comic's start. Of the three, Maxim is the youngest. Like all Jägermonsters, they were all originally humans who were recruited from among the best fighters the Heterodynes had. Some glimpses of their old, human lives are seen in the comic. Oggie once had a wife (Vol. 20 p. 17) with whom he had children, which means he sees his own distant descendants from time to time in his adventures. Dimo apparently (Vol. 5 p. 38) came from a family of musicians.
For centuries they had served the House of Heterodyne as it's soldiers, seeing generations of masters pass. They personally remember (Vol. 16 p. 87, Vol. 17 p. 86) fighting the Storm King Andronicus Valois over 200 years ago. They also recall being stuck with the "Red Heterodyne" in some caverns for two years (Vol. 6 p. 50). Maxim dislikes (Vol. 5 p. 36) how the "Heterodyne Shows" depict Punch (a construct made by Bill and Barry Heterodyne) as stupid, because he personally met Punch and knew him to be quite smart.
When Bill and Barry Heterodyne disappeared, Baron Klaus Wulfenbach recruited the Jägers into his army (Vol. 5 p. 47). It was agreed that Maxim, Oggie, and Dimo would be cut off from the main pack in order to find the lost Heterodyne heir.
Finding the Heterodyne[]
The trio first showed up in the comic (Vol. 4 p. 96) when Agatha was passing through the town of Zumzum. The three were being hung in the town square, yet were able to survive the nooses around their necks. Dimo was able to sniff out Agatha from a distance. Agatha was initially put off by them, yet still felt bad for the three. Eventually the town would face trouble as a Jäger named Jenka and her bear got into a fight with the locals. Agatha tried to help the town by cutting them down, and invoking her status as the Heterodyne to command them to help. They did as she said, and chased Jenka out of town.
Outside the town, the three explained to Jenka that they found a Heterodyne. Jenka in turn ordered them to go back and guard Agatha. Maxim, Oggie, and Dimo soon came back to help Agatha and friends fight off a horde of revenants. After the battle, they convinced Master Payne to let them travel with the circus. They then met Agatha in private to explain their situation to her as wild Jägers. Agatha accepted her status as their Lady, and they went off together with the circus to Sturmhalten and eventually Mechanicsburg.
Later Adventures[]
In Sturmhalten, they accompanied Agatha until after the circus finished their performance before the prince, when Agatha was invited to have dinner in the prince's castle alone. As she spend more and more time in the castle, both the Jägers and the circus got worried for Agatha. They tried and failed to sneak in to investigate. When morning came, "Agatha" (actually under Lucrezia's mind-control) reunited with them, but the party got caught by Baron Klaus Wulfenbach. Lucrezia!Agatha and Klaus had a confrontation where Agatha regained control of her body and they had to fight Klaus to escape. They did, and made plans for Mechanicsburg.
They made it to Mechanicsburg together. Agatha arranged to enter the Castle Heterodyne to repair it. Maxim, Oggie, and Dimo had to stay behind as Jägermonsters are bound by oath to not enter the castle until they have a Heterodyne. It was during Agatha's repairs to the castle that the events of the short story "Maxim Buys A Hat" took place; in which Maxim dueled with the war veteran and sandwich-store owner "Old Man Death" to claim his hat. It is also during this time that Maxim, Oggie, and Dimo met with the Jäger Generals to discuss Agatha and what issues she may face.
Eventually the Doom Bell rang and Agatha was officially declared the Lady Heterodyne. The trio rejoined the rest of the Jäger horde in the defence of the city from invaders. The following Siege of Mechanicsburg saw them as part of a repair team that helped fix up the town's defences. When the siege ended and Baron Wulfenbach landed in Mechanicsburg, the three were outside of the city.
The Baron had frozen the town and everyone within it in a time-bubble. Over the next two years, Maxim, Oggie, and Dimo lived in a cavern fortress near Mechanicsburg with several other refugees. Two years after the siege, Agatha reappeared and reunited with her Jägers. As she prepared to go elsewhere, the three followed her.
They accompanied Agatha in Paris. When the undead corpse of Andronicus Valois attacked the city, the three all got together to personally fight him. Turns out Andronucus really hated Jägers, so they did a great job of making him angry and distracted.
They also accompanied her in England. When in the Queen's Dome, they put up a good fight against Snackleford's monsters, and an even better fight against Lucrezia. Afterwards they attended a dance hosted by Queen Albia and helped their Lady put on a show in front of the queen.
Dimo, and presumably Maxim and Oggie, split up from their Lady while she looked for Prende's Lantern, going with Gilgamesh Wulfenbach back to Paris instead. Their current situation is as of yet unknown.
Powers and Abilities[]
Maxim, Oggie, and Dimo have all the powers common to other Jägermonsters. These include:
- Enhanced fighting ability: The three are shown to be very capable in combat.
- Enhanced durability: They are able to survive hits that would normally kill someone. For example, Oggie once survived getting impaled through the chest by a sword.
- Longevity: Jäger physiology allows them to live longer than a normal human. Dimo is around 300 years old, while Oggie and Maxim are around 250-300.
- Enhanced smell: The three are shown to be able to detect scents much better than normal humans.
- Sharpened claws and teeth: All of them are seen with very sharp teeth. While they have claws too, they aren't as prominent as other Jägers.
Personalities[]
Maxim[]
Maxim is the most resigned of the group. He tends to speak less than the others. Sometimes he acts like he knows a lot about romance, despite not having fallen in love before. He tries to put on an act of chivalry.
Oggie[]
Oggie is the most carefree of the group. He's one of the few Jägers that we know fell in love before. He acts rather goofy even by the standards of other Jägers. That said, when he met his great-great-grandson, he was adamant about him having kids.
Dimo[]
Dimo is something of the group's unofficial leader and voice of reason. He's the one who comes up with most of the plans and tactics. He also seems somewhat disappointed in Maxim and Oggie's antics. But he is still a Jäger, and acting less goofy than the others still doesn't mean being totally serious.

- The rough ages of the three were given in an interview the Foglios had with a fan at Comic Con '08 (on 27 Jul. 2008), posted to LiveJournal on 28 Jul. 2008. Phil Foglio had the exact ages written down somewhere, but forgot what they were at the time of the interview.
