Maxine "Max" Minx is the main protagonist of Ti West's X trilogy.

She is a young, fame-obsessed porn scarlet star in 1970s Texas, who travels with a film crew to a ranch for their new adult film. However, things go awry when Maxine meets the elderly owner of the ranch, Pearl, who looks exactly like her.

She is portrayed by Mia Goth, who also portrayed Pearl in the first two films.

Biography[]

Background[]

Maxine grew up in a religious household, under strict supervision from her father Ernest Miller, a famous television preacher. Feeling suppressed by his influence and seeking validation from the world at large, Maxine ran away and began starring in adult films. Eventually, she began dating a producer, Wayne Gilroy.

X[]

Maxine travels with a film crew— consisting of herself, Wayne, Bobby-Lynne Parker, Jackson Hole, and newcomers Lorraine Day and her boyfriend, RJ Nichols— to a ranch in rural Texas, which Wayne rented for their shoot from an old man named Howard.

After arriving at the ranch, Maxine wanders the premises and accidentally finds herself in Howard's house, where she runs into his wife, Pearl. Pearl pours Maxine some lemonade and reveals that she is envious of her youth due to Maxine looking uncannily similar to a younger Pearl. She then begins groping an uncomfortable Maxine. When Howard returns home, Pearl ushers Maxine out and tells her that their interaction will be their "little secret".

Later in the day, the crew begins to shoot their pornographic film, as Pearl secretly watches from the outside, imagining herself in Maxine's position. Maxine also performs a scene with Lorraine at the latter's behest, much to RJ's discomfort. Pearl returns home and tries to have sex with Howard, who refuses due to his heart condition.

Late that night, Maxine climbs into bed and falls asleep. During that time, Pearl attempts to seduce RJ and, upon being rejected, murders him and begins a killing spree. Pearl also kills Wayne while Howard captures Lorraine, intending to use her as a sex slave for Pearl, and murders Jackson for arousing his wife.

After committing her murders, Pearl climbs into bed next to Maxine and begins to grope and molest her. Maxine awakens and screams in terror upon seeing a naked Pearl. Maxine frantically searches for the others as Bobby-Lynne is also killed by Pearl. Upon returning to the guesthouse, Maxine hears Pearl and Howard enter and hides under the bed. Pearl and Howard enter the room and begin having sex on the bed, allowing a disgusted Maxine to escape.

Maxine arms herself with Wayne's pistol and rescues Lorraine from the basement, only for Lorraine to hysterically attempt to flee on her own, resulting in her being blasted in the head by a shotgun-wielding Howard. However, as Pearl and Howard attempt to move her body, it starts to twitch, causing Howard to have a fatal heart attack.

Maxine takes the opportunity to hold a dying Howard and a hysterical Pearl at gunpoint, demanding the keys to Howard's truck. After retrieving them, Pearl begins to point out that she and Maxine are strangely similar, and that Maxine may end up just like her in the future. Maxine attempts to shoot at Pearl, only to find that Wayne's gun is unloaded. Pearl grabs Howard's shotgun and tries to shoot Maxine, only for Maxine to dodge, and the shotgun’s recoil sends Pearl flying outside, breaking her hip.

Pearl screams and hurls insults at Maxine as the latter starts up Howard's truck, swearing that she and Maxine are one and the same. Maxine responds by backing the truck over Pearl's head and running it back over immediately afterwards, saying that it will be their "secret". With that, a traumatized Maxine drives off as one of her father's sermons plays on TV, where he reveals Maxine's picture to the audience and encourages them to find her.

MaXXXine[]

In 1985 Los Angeles, amidst the Night Stalker murders, Maxine Minx successfully auditions for the lead in a new horror film, The Puritan II, despite all of her previous film credits being in adult films. After sharing the news with her friend Leon and colleague Amber James, the latter invites Maxine to a party in the Hollywood Hills, which she declines. Maxine goes to work at her second job, a live peep show, where a mysterious, leather-clad figure watches with anger. She meets another adult entertainer, Tabby Martin, who also invites her to the party that Amber mentioned, but Maxine declines again.

The figure leaves a police evidence VHS tape containing the porn film Maxine and her now-deceased friends had attempted to make six years prior. Upon watching it, she asks a confused Leon to find out where it came from. Meanwhile, in the Hollywood Hills, Amber and Tabby are killed and have their bodies branded with Satanic symbols. Maxine is invited to meet with John Labat, a private investigator who informs her that her previous crimes will be revealed unless she meets with his employer, telling her she must appear at a specific address on Starlight Drive later that night or risk repercussions. LAPD detectives Williams and Torres question Maxine about Tabby and Amber, but she refuses to answer them. She later sees Labat following her and attacks him, warning him to stay away from her.

Ignoring Labat's demands, Maxine begins reciting the script for The Puritan II. Elsewhere, Leon is murdered in his video store. The next day, the detectives attempt to goad Maxine into cooperating with them, but she remains steadfast. Maxine confides in her agent, Teddy Knight, who tells her he could not find anything on Labat but agrees to continue helping her nonetheless. On the set of The Puritan II, Maxine meets the star of the first film, Molly Bennett, who mentions a similar party in the Hollywood Hills. Soon after, Labat, angered by Maxine attacking him the previous day, chases her across the Universal Studios Lot with a gun before being caught and escorted away by security. Later that night, Maxine tricks Labat into following her, during which she, Knight, and her friend Shepard Turei ambush Labat, and subsequently trap him inside of his car to be crushed by a junkyard compressor.

Maxine visits the address Labat gave her, which leads her to a house in the Hollywood Hills. She finds Molly's dismembered body and learns the murders have been committed by her estranged father, a televangelist named Ernest Miller, with the assistance of the fundamentalist members of his ministry. Miller reveals he and his followers have been filming the murders to create a snuff film intended to expose Hollywood for what he sees as its sinful and corrupting nature. Thinking he can still "save" his daughter, Miller has his followers tie Maxine to a tree for an impromptu exorcism, which he also films. Torres and Williams interrupt the ceremony and cause a shootout, killing Miller's cohorts, injuring Miller, and giving Maxine time to free herself before the detectives are mortally wounded while pursuing Miller. Armed with a shotgun, Maxine eventually confronts her father at the Hollywood sign but is interrupted by a police helicopter.

Maxine envisions herself as a celebrity credited for helping stop her father, attending the premiere of The Puritan II and revealing in an interview that the film's director, Elizabeth Bender, will be directing a biographical film about her. Returning to reality, she shoots her father, telling him he gave her what she needed – divine intervention. A month later, Maxine continues her work on The Puritan II, hoping her success will never end The Projectionist.
