~ Medli |
Medli is a major character in the 2002 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
She lives on Dragon Roost Island where the Rito dwell and she is an apprentice attendant to the Sky Spirit Lord Valoo. She used to train under Komali's late grandmother's guidance to succeed her and was left to study on her own. Unbeknownst to Medli, her Rito Harp that she plays would end up changing her life as her teacher saw that she had a destiny waiting to call to her. Medli is capable of flying, but it still needs a lot of improvement.
Biography[]
Medli lived on Dragon Roost Island; she was playing her harp one day and Komali's grandmother came up to her, seeing the harp, she dubs it as a tool of fate but doesn't give details about this and decides to train Medli to become Valoo's next attendant. After her teacher passes away, Medli becomes the new attendant, but she is only able to understand some of Valoo's language and isn't overly confident about it. Prince Komali is also negatively affected by his grandmother's death and is more anxious about visiting Valoo, who recently had gone violent and Medli wanted to investigate why this was happening, but the dried up spring and the messed up wind patterns aren't helping matters.
Medli meets Link after his unsuccessful attempt at saving his sister Aryll, and later arriving at Dragon Roost from Windfall Island. She holds the Chieftain's Letter for Link to retrieve and give it to the standoffish Prince Komali. She asks Link to meet her at the entrance of Dragon Roost Cavern after he gives his father's letter to Komali and tells him not to take his sour mood personally. Upon arriving, the spring had dried up due to being plugged by a boulder due to Valoo's rage, and the wind patterns being thrown out of whack. Medli requests Link's help in throwing her towards the entrance of the cavern and must do so with the right timing regarding the wind's direction. After Link is able to get her up there, Medli thanks Link by giving him an empty bottle so that he can use to water the dried up Bomb Flowers to destroy the boulder and restore the spring so he himself can get across. She is subsequently captured by Bokoblins and a Moblin and imprisoned at the top of Dragon Roost. There she learns that a bigger monster is messing with Valoo's tail at the room just below which explains why he is acting this way. After Link saves her, she then gives him a Grappling Hook to swing across gaps and would come in handy in defeating Gohma and put an end to Valoo's rage. Medli was telling everyone about the events and witness the clouds at the top dissipating and Komali comes along looking smiling a bit. After Link is warped out of the dungeon, Medli and Komali await him and they express their gratitude, and Komali has shown some growing up by apologizing to Link for mistrusting him and gives him Din's Pearl that he was attached to. Valoo is also grateful and gives Link some hints which Medli translates and Komali leaves to visit Valoo so he can finally get a scale from Valoo that would grant him his wings and Medli follows after him.
After Link saves Aryll and the girls from Windfall Island, and meets with the spirit of Laruto who tells him to find someone who has a similar instrument to her own who would succeed her. Link returns to Dragon Roost Island to meet with her. Medli is pleased to see him again and Komali had been asking about of his adventures and has been doing more things without her guidance which she finds to be bittersweet. Link then conducts the "Earth God's Lyric" causing Medli to pass out. During a trance she meets Laruto who teaches her the song that would power up the Master Sword. Upon waking up, Medli realized her purpose and that she is the Earth Sage. She began to understand what her teacher meant about her connection to a special destiny which she must carry out in Laruto's stead and asks Link to take her to the Earth Temple and they do so, just as Prince Komali returned but he has no idea where they've gone. After arriving at the island, The King of Red Lions gives them instructions to get through the harrowing place full of supernatural beings. Medli's role is to fly to high places to activate switches, and reflect light from her harp to disintegrate statues, light one side of the sun, and stun enemies such as ReDeads and make Poes tangible enough to be attacked with Link's sword; in addition playing the "Earth God's Lyric" with Medli around will break stones that block passages or doors to progress through the dungeon. After Link destroys Jalhalla, Medli is able to perform her duty and she and Link perform "Earth God's Lyric" together. This caused the Master Sword's hilts to open up. Medli informs Link that she only restored half of the Master Sword's power and he must go to the Wind Temple with the Wind Sage to completely restore it to its former glory. She then asks Link to watch over Prince Komali for her as he departs. If the player returns to the boss room where she plays her Rito Harp, Medli will not acknowledge his presence.
Medli appears at the game's ending once the evil Ganondorf is defeated. She, Tetra's pirates, Komali, Aryll, and Makar all greet Link and Tetra aboard the pirate ship, with she and Makar having finally fulfilled their duties.
