Dr. Robert David Bruce Banner, also known also known as Hulk and later Mega Hulk is the titular overarching protagonist of the What If...? episode "What If... The Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers?"
History[]
While jogging at Washington D.C., Bruce Banner met Sam Wilson, who invited him for a therapy meeting; he shared his life story about not only his difficulty to control the monster in him, but everyone who fears him, which makes him feel lonely. Sam started befriending Bruce, assuring him he was not alone anymore. He had a great time at the boat of Sam's sister Sarah, but a fateful storm struck in middle ocean. Bruce saved Sarah from getting hit by a crane, which instead hit him, and caused him to transform into Hulk. Sam stepped in and tried to calm him down, and Bruce fled before he could hurt him. Back in the lab, Bruce decided to get rid of the Hulk once and for all by bombarding himself with Gamma radiation. Unfortunately, he accidentally ended up creating a Kaiju-like monster known as the "Apex", which began rampaging the city, creating an army of gamma monsters. Ashamed of what he had done, Banner isolated himself in Astra Islands.
10 years later, Sam (now Captain America) traveled to Astra Islands to search for Banner through the forest, and found him. Sam asked him for help to defeat The New Apex, but Bruce declines. He instead gave Sam a drive containing another protocol he built to protect the world from himself: the Mighty Avenger Protocol.
However, after the Avengers failed to stop the Apex, Banner, having decided to conquer his fear, arrived in an auto-piloted plane and ejected himself inside a nuclear Gamma bomb. The explosion permanently transformed him into another Kaiju, Mega-Hulk. After defeating and destroying the Apex, Mega-Hulk eventually became the new ruler of the Gamma beasts, and led them to Astra Island.
Trivia[]
- He is based upon more heroic iterations of Godzilla, visually emphasized by scales, tail, and dorsal ridges that are similar to the details of the iconic kaiju.
- Banner's first encounter with Sam mirrors Sam's first encounter with Steve Rogers in Captain America: The Winter Soldier
