Mercedes von Martritz, also known as Mercie, is a major character in the 2019 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses and its 2022 spin-off sequel Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

She is a member of the Blue Lion house who is proficient with Light Magic and Dark Magic. She is the best friend of Annette Fantine Dominic, the older half sister of Emile von Bartels, and childhood friend of Constance von Nuvelle.

She is voiced by Yumiri Hanamori in the Japanese version and Dorothy Elias-Fahn in the English version.

Appearance[]

Mercedes is a 22 year old woman with long blonde hair (originally brunette) done into a low ponytail on the left side and blue eyes. She wears a black and white dress with a cloak, dark blue stockings, and brown boots.

In the post-timeskip, she wears a hat with a veil, blue earrings, beige and dark brown dress, and shorter haircut.

Personality[]

Mercedes is a very positive person. Despite all the awful things that happened to her, she almost always acts calm, constantly trying to help anyone who needs it. She has a motherly personality and can't ignore people in need. Due to her being very religious, she lets people tell her what to do, saying it is the will of the goddess. She is also a bit scatterbrained and very clumsy. She is still capable of getting angry, though, as seen in her support with Lorenz. Overall, she simply is always trying to help people in need.

She likes baking sweets, ghost stories, needlework, painting, reading, flowers and adorable things. She dislikes spicy foods and exercise. She also hates crests due to her bad experience with them.

Biography[]

Mecedes was born to Baron Matritz of the Adrestrian Empire. Her father died shortly after she was born, so her mother remarried to Baron Bartels. The two had a son named Emile a year later, who bore a crest. However, shortly after Emile's birth, Baron Bartels abandoned Mercedes and her mother due to him getting a child with a crest. The two fled from the Baron and hid in a nearby church, though they left Emile behind. This was Emile's decision, since he feared that his father would kill both his sister and mother if he went with them. However, Baron Bartels found Mercedes and her mother, and was planned to reclaim them. He planned to make Mercedes his new wife, since her mother was past the age to bear children. Enraged by his father's plan, Emile went insane and massacred House Bartels, including his father, giving birth to a bloodthirsty split-personality known as the Death Knight. He would later be taken in by the princess of the Adrestian Empire, Edelgard von Hresvelg, under the name Jeritza.

Mercedes was eventually adopted by a merchant in the Kingdom, where she grew up as a commoner.

Before going to Officers Academy in Garreg Mach, she attended the Royal School of Sorcery in the Kingdom capital of Fhirdiad, where she befriended Annette. Mercedes than joined the Blue Lions. She joins Byleth if Byleth chooses the Blue Lions house. If not, she can be recruited into either of the other houses if Byleth has enough Magic and Bow proficiency.

If the Azure Moon route was chosen, Mercedes joins the rest of the class at Garreg Mach Monastery after the time skip. After liberating the country from Cornelia, Dimitri and his forces attack fort Merceus. The Death Knight is mortally wounded during the battle. Mercedes removes his mask, revealing himself to be her half-brother Emile. She then comforts him as he dies in her arms.

If the Crimson Flower route was chosen, she will join the Black Eagle Strike Force if she was recruited before the time skip. If not, she will be one of the generals who assists Dimitri in Tailtean Plains. She dies in the conflict. If the Verdant Wind or Silver Snow route is chosen, she will return to the monastery if recruited. In the Verdant Wind route, she will appear in Gronder Field with Dimitri. She can be killed in the conflict, but her fate is unknown if she survives.

If any route other than Crimson Flower is chosen and Caspar is recruited, Caspar tells Byleth that a small battalion led by the Death Knight are scouting the monastery. Mercedes hears the conversation and also goes with Caspar, thinking that the Death Knight might be her half-brother Emile. The Death Knight's forces attack, but he does not enter the fray. When all of his forces are defeated, Mercedes confronts the Death Knight, who confirms that he is Emile. Mercedes tries to convince Emile to join her, but Emile refuses, giving her the Rafail Gem before he leaves, vowing that the next tim they meet, he will kill her.

Mercedes is a playable character in the gacha mobile game Fire Emblem Heroes. She was added on August 7, 2019, under the "Changing Winds" banner and her summer variation was added on June 21, 2021 under the "Summer Vibrance" banner.
