I have been working on this since my arrival in Dream Land. Sword Knight and Blade Knight helped me a great deal, they were sworn to secrecy of course. It is called; Battleship Halberd!
~ Meta Knight

Meta Knight is the overarching protagonist in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, which in turn is based off the Kirby video game series. He is one of the last surviving members of the Star Warriors who fought eNeMeE, and later went on to act as Kirby's coach in order to defeat eNeMeE once and for all.

He was voiced by Atsushi Kisaichi in the Japanese original version and Eric Stuart in the English version.

Background[]

In the series, Meta Knight is initially believed to be the last surviving member of the Star Warriors. After eNeMeE killed most of his friends and comrades, he later went on to work for King Dedede in order to keep an eye on Nightmare Enterprises, and to secretly build a ship so he can face eNeMeE once again. He later recruits two former crooks, Sword and Blade Knight, to help him in his battle against eNeMeE.

At first, Meta Knight's intentions are unclear. In the show's third episode "Kirby's Duel Role", he tells King Dedede that he would like to battle Kirby in a sword fight. Although seemingly antagonising Kirby, he ultimately reveals that he simply wanted to make sure that Kirby was able to fight and handle a sword. Later, in "The Kirby Derby", Meta Knight appears to be on King Dedede's side in helping the king win the race the lot were taking part in. He also gets Sword and Blade to tamper with the controls of Kirby's ship, though he later reveals that he was actually helping Kirby with his piloting skills.

Some of Meta Knight's origins are revealed in the episode "Crusade for the Blade", where his friend Garlude sacrificed herself so Meta Knight could acquire the Galaxia sword from the monster Kirisakin. When Garlude's daughter Sirica believes Meta Knight is behind her mother's death, he has a hard time explaining to her that she is wrong until the Galaxia sword talks to Sirica to explain the whole story. When Sirica also throws Kirby the sword (though ultimately survives), Meta Knight tells her that her mother would be proud of her.

In the five-part finale of the anime, Fright to the Finish!, Meta Knight reveals that he has been building a ship secretly under Castle Dedede called the Halberd. With the help of fellow Star Warrior Kit Cosmos, he is able to recruit several Cappies to help him, Kirby and their friends to defeat eNeMeE once and for all. After Kirby uses the Star Rod to destroy the villain who had been causing trouble for many years, Meta Knight and his recruits destroy Nightmare Enterprises, finally ultimately bringing an end to their long-term terror.

Personality[]

Meta Knight is a mysterious and stoic individual who typically likes to observe all the events that occur in Cappy Town from a distance, generally only acting when he feels it is required. He lives in Castle Dedede and works for King Dedede - his role Dedede has given him is somewhat unclear, though it seems to be his job in helping to protect the castle from intruders.

Although he always has good intentions, Meta Knight sometimes acts in a rather suspicious manner from time to time, with him appearing to help King Dedede with his schemes on two occasions. He appears to be helping the king in getting rid of Kirby, only for it to be revealed on both occasions that he is actually helping Kirby and giving him some indirect training before they can confront eNeMeE and the rest of Nightmare Enterprises. Alongside Kirby, he also occasionally helps Tiff. This is especially seen in the episode "The School Scam" where he helps her practice self-defense.

Though it is unknown why, Meta Knight has a lot of knowledge on how Kirby fights, and knows the name of most of his copy abilities. He has a bit of difficulty guessing Throw Kirby, but gets it right after a while, and is initially unsure about Mike Kirby's name, at first calling him Microphone Kirby.

Although normally a calm individual with little in the way of words, he will act more upfront when he feels is necessary, such as when WolfWrath tries to attack Kirby in the episode "Hour of the WolfWrath", or when Knuckle Joe causes chaos in Cappy Town in the episode "Here Comes the Son". Meta Knight appears to be good at redeeming others, such as getting Knuckle Joe to stop his delusional actions before it kills him, and by defending Sword and Blade Knight from WolfWrath from attacking them which in turn makes the two join him out of gratitude.

Meta Knight has a more laid back side as well. He is shown to sometimes enjoy watching Channel DDD, and appears to have a sweet tooth based on the jar he has in his room. Meta Knight also occasionally likes to crack jokes from time to time, though these occasions are more rare. His eyes will also sometimes turn a certain colour depending on the mood he is in.

Trivia[]

  • In the Kirby of the Stars pilot, Meta Knight is actually depicted as a villain. However. it is extremely unlikely that the pilot is in anyway canon to the main series.
  • It is unknown exactly how long Meta Knight had been working on the Halberd for.
