Metal Mario first appears in Super Mario 64 as a power up, also known as the Metal Cap. Once obtained, it grants Mario invincibility (besides fall damage), he can destroy enemies upon contact, and he retains all of Mario's physical and athletic abilities. He is also very heavy, which grants him the ability to walk underwater. In addition, he does not need to breath underwater. The Metal Cap can combined with the Vanish Cap to become Vanish Metal Mario, which enables him to walk through most semi-transparent walls like fences.
