“ | A human sacrificed himself to save the Pokémon, I pitted them against each other, but not until they set aside their differences did I see the true power that they shared deep inside. I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant, it's what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are. | „ |
~ Mewtwo's iconic quote |
"Life is wonderful, but why?—Mewtwo remembering what Amber said to him
Mewtwo is the former antagonist turned hero in the movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back. He was a Pokémon artificially created by Dr. Fuji to serve Team Rocket. As the only clone to survive the process Mewtwo entered the world confused and alone, however by the end of the movie, Mewtwo realized the true meaning of life and error of his ways. In his future appearances, Mewtwo is shown to have compassion, caring for other Pokemon so they can find peace within the world.
The English voice actor of Mewtwo in Pokemon the First Movie and The Birth of Mewtwo was Jay Geode.
The English voice actor of Mewtwo in Mewtwo Returns, Pokemon Journeys and Mewtwo Strikes Back-Evolution was Dan Green.
Personality[]
Mewtwo is shown to be extremely intelligent, formulating strong vocabulary and ideals after he shattered the tube, destroyed New Island and the Viridian Gym. Due to his painful backstory with the clones, Giovanni and the scientists, Mewtwo developed a thirst for vengeance against humanity clearly stating it before the intro.
Owing to his nature as a clone, Mewtwo grew deeply insecure about his existence, thus a motivation beyond revenge was to prove he was superior to the original, as well as prove his created clones were superior to anything humans could make and naturally born Pokémon alike. His power made him arrogant, which was also fed by insecurity and grief.
After the events of the first movie, Mewtwo learned compassion, showing clear signs of it in Mewtwo Returns and Pokémon Journeys. Thus, showing that despite his traumatic origin, he was capable of accepting goodness in the world and understood that not all humans were the evil manipulators like he judged them because of Giovanni.
Appearance[]
Like most Mewtwo (Regular form) in the Pokémon franchise, Mewtwo has a skinny, humanoid body, with pointed ears, three toes, three fingers, a long tail and a tube that connects his head and body. His skin is white with a purplish hue, while his tail and eyes are a more saturated purple. Constantly, he looks agitated, with scrunched eyes and barely smiling. As a baby, he almost had the same attributes, except he looks more childish and carefree.
Biography[]
The Birth of Mewtwo[]
Like most antagonists, Mewtwo's backstory is a tragic one, this special takes place in the early stages of Mewtwo's creation, even appearing like a child show that. The main setting is this unknown void where baby Mewtwo resided in. Later, clones of Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur and Amber entered the void as well. With Amber being the one who conversed with Mewtwo, they talked about life and emotion, and explored different sceneries as they conversed. Sadly, the cloned Pokémon and Amber didn't survive the process, so Amber reassured Mewtwo that life is amazing and that he should cherish it, and as they say their farewells, Mewtwo cried but he didn't understand why, however, the viewers knew that Mewtwo felt scared and alone, entering the world by himself. Unfortunately, his mind was wiped after this incident, so he didn't remember it after his awakening.
Pokémon: The First Movie And Pokemon: Indigo League[]

Mewtwo beats a trainer's Onix in one attack, showcasing his dominant power over other Pokémon.
Early in the movie we view the movie in Mewtwo's perspective, he was looking at Mew in a peaceful setting surrounded by greenery, asking repeated questions about itself, and the outside world. Afterwards, we see him awake in his tube, watching his surrounding area, before shattering the glass tube into a large amount of shards, alerting Dr. Fuji and his scientists of his awakening. As everyone celebrated and told Mewtwo about his general information, Mewtwo asked frustratingly about his existence and without getting any proper answers he destroyed the lab, killing all inhabitants and removing all evidence of the lab's existence. Within the burning remains Mewtwo met Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, who took advantage of Mewtwo's lack of worldly knowledge and proposed to be partners, which Mewtwo accepted. At the Viridian Gym, Mewtwo was given an advanced suit of armor, so he can "control" his power to be less destructive, and obscure his identity. Then under the command of Giovanni, Mewtwo aided with Team Rocket missions and fought challengers at the gym, completing these tasks with ease. However, like in the laboratory, Mewtwo didn't gain any answers from completing his tasks, he didn't feel complete. So, after beating Gary Oak's Arcanine and Nidoking, he asked Giovanni about his purpose, then Giovanni had shown his true colors, calling him nothing but a tool, that his only purpose was to serve Giovanni. So, Mewtwo agitated and distraught, destroyed the Viridian Gym and returned to New Island, and he planned a reign, where he would take his revenge upon mankind. At some point before Ash's battle with Raymond, Mewtwo built a palace on New Island, kidnapped Nurse Joy, and took control of her mind, turning Joy into Mewtwo's servant. Mewtwo watched Ash's battle, Fergus' battle, Neesha's battle, Corey's battle and battles from other trainers with potential, afterwards he sent them invites to a gathering at New Island. To contribute to his vengeful personality, Mewtwo created a powerful storm that threatened to destroy the world, as he wanted to create a new one that would be enforced under his guidelines. This also provided as a test, because Mewtwo wanted the strong-willed and powerful trainers to visit the palace. When all of the worthy Pokemon trainers came, Mewtwo entered, claiming that he was the most powerful trainer, however, Corey and Fergus objected, and they used their Rhyhorn and Gyarados to try and contribute to their claim, however, they fail miserably. Ash also objects and challenges Mewtwo to a battle, which Mewtwo accepted and reveals his clones of Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise as his Pokemon. With Ash, Neesha and Corey deciding to fight with their originals, and they lose miserably. So to "claim his prize", Mewtwo captures all the Pokemon in the palace with special Pokeballs of his own design to take down to the rebuilt lab to be cloned and form his army to repopulate the planet after his storm wipes out humanity and the Pokemon born naturally, leaving his clones to reign supreme. However, Ash pursues Mewtwo's Pokeball that captured his Pikachu down into the lab and fights off the cloning machine's attempts to take it and clone Pikachu, resulting in the machine being damaged to the point it self-destructs, releasing all the captured Pokemon, but also awakening all of the clone Pokemon as well. Back topside, Mewtwo allows Corey, Fergus, Neesha, Brock, Misty, and Nurse Joy the chance to leave before his storm unleashes its fury on the planet, but is then joined by his clones. As he gloats over his impending victory, Ash emerges from the smoke, scowling in defiant fury, joined by all the freed Pokemon. Refusing to let Mewtwo have his way, Ash tries to attack Mewtwo physically, but is repulsed by Mewtwo's Psychic powers and sent flying, only to be saved by the Mew that Mewtwo was cloned from. Seeing a chance to prove to his superiority to the Pokemon he was cloned from, Mewtwo attempts to attack Mew, who initially doesn't fight back until being hit by one of Mewtwo's attacks directly, then retaliates with one of its own attacks that hits Mewtwo and slams him into a wall. Now seeing that Mew actually does want to fight, Mewtwo decides to face it while pitting his clone Pokemon against the real ones, using his powers to suppress their special abilities so they can only use Normal-type physical attacks on each other. However, while Mewtwo and Mew slug it out without showing any signs of fatigue or exhaustion, the clone and real Pokemon begin to tire and exhaust themselves as they beat each other up, much to the horror of Nurse Joy and the Trainers. Even Ash's Pikachu refuses to fight its own clone, no matter how much his clone attacks him and demands he fight back, while Meowth waxes philosophical with his clone. Finally, Mew and Mewtwo's fight returns to the arena floor, and after trying to attack each other with Psybeam, they prepare to fire a much stronger version to finish each other off. Unable to bear watching it any longer, Ash, without any regard for his own safety, runs to the middle of the arena as he shouts for Mew and Mewtwo to stop, but ends up being at ground zero when Mew and Mewtwo's Psybeams collide, resulting in him being killed, the power of the two Psychic-type attacks striking him simultaneously turning his body to stone. Mewtwo is shocked by Ash's actions, calling him a fool for trying to stop the battle, but as he watches, the heartbreak and sadness felt by Ash's Pikachu and all the Pokemon there, real or cloned, causes their tears to coalesce in Ash's body and resuscitate him, restoring him back to life, and flesh and blood. Moved by what he saw, Mewtwo sees the error of his ways, and together with Mew, he takes all of his clones, and departs to find somewhere he and his fellow clones can live in peace. However, he decides that the events of what happened on New Island is best forgotten, and sends Nurse Joy, Ash, Misty, Brock, Fergus, Neesha, Corey, and all their Pokemon back to Old Shore Wharf, erasing their memories of him and New Island, and reducing his storm to just a natural one that soon disperses.
Mewtwo Returns[]
At the beginning of this special, Mewtwo summarizes his story from "Mewtwo Strikes Back", giving us a reminder of his origin story and how he got to where he was. He also mentions that Giovanni was tailing Mewtwo due to his memory not being wiped, and as Team Rocket skim their footage, Mewtwo and his clones watch the sunset within Purity Canyon, and Mewtwo calls it beautiful, then disregarding his claim due to being an artificial creation. When the Purity Canyon bus gets caught in a strong wind, Mewtwo uses his Psychic abilities to save the driver and passengers from their doom.
Since the events of the first movie, Mewtwo and his clones have found sanctuary on Mount Quena in the Johto Region. However, Giovanni, leader of Team Rocket, still aware of Mewtwo's existence due to not having his memory wiped as he was not on New Island when Mewtwo did it to Ash, his friends, Nurse Joy, the other trainers, and Jessie, James, and Meowth, has been trailing Mewtwo for some time. Once he identified Mount Quena as Mewtwo's home, he dispatches his elite agent, Agent 009, also known as the Black Tulip and her civilian identity Domino, to infiltrate Mount Quena. Once she secures Mewtwo's location, Giovanni will come with the Team Rocket Combat Unit to capture Mewtwo and force him back into servitude to Giovanni.
When Ash and his friends, along with Jessie, James, and Meowth, encounter Mewtwo again, since their memories of New Island were erased, this is considered their first meeting with him. Domino then reveals herself to be one of Giovanni's elite agents to her fellow Team Rocket operatives in Jessie, James, and Meowth, before puncturing their Meowth balloon and returning to the combat unit. When Giovanni attacks Mount Quena and threatens the clone Pokémon along with those already living on the mountain, including some mother and children Pokémon, Mewtwo is forced to surrender to protect them.
However, Giovanni's decision to fortify Mount Quena with a new Team Rocket base after securing Mewtwo proves to be a costly mistake. Several Bug Pokémon, enraged by Giovanni's tampering of the mountain, attack with a vengeance, and Ash uses the opportunity they create to free Mewtwo, but the Psychic Pokémon is severely weakened from enduring Giovanni's torture, so Ash takes him to the spring on the mountaintop to recover due to the spring's natural healing powers. Mewtwo seen the spring as the one he saw in his dream, realizing he too belongs on Earth rightfully. When Giovanni appears to confront Ash for disrupting his plans, Mewtwo, fully recovered and having accepted that he and the clone Pokémon are as real as any other Pokémon since the spring affected him like it did the other Pokémon who were healed by it, uses his powers to move the spring and lake underground, out of Team Rocket's reach, and also transports Giovanni, his Persian, Domino, and the Team Rocket Combat Unit back to their HQ, and then erases their memories to ensure they never try to attack Mount Quena again and forget all about him and the clones. At Ash's request, Mewtwo chooses not to erase Ash, Misty, Brock, Jessie, James, Meowth, or the researchers' memories of him, the clones, and the healing waters as they promise to keep the knowledge a secret. Mewtwo also thanks Ash for saving him from Giovanni's machines.
Later, as Ash, Misty, and Brock are continuing their journey, Ash hears Mewtwo's voice again as it tells him, "I will remember you always", before showing Mewtwo standing on a building, denoted by the narrator as a Pokémon who traversed the city at night.
Pokémon Journeys[]
Since leaving Mount Quena, Mewtwo had been taking care of Pokémon abused by humans on Cero Island. He was found after Professor Cerise and his crew sensed Psychic activity on Cero Island, thinking it may be Mew, Ash and Goh were sent to research this weird phenomenon. After the research fellows fall into a waterfall after a predicament with a Gyarados, Mewtwo saves them and leaves them in his "sanctuary" unconscious. After they wake up they meet the abused Pokémon, who call on Mewtwo after some time. When Mewtwo reveals himself he asks about their reason for their journey to the island. Ash almost immediately recognizes him but Mewtwo doesn't show any sign of recollection of Ash. They both talk about "dreams" and ask for a battle. Mewtwo is impressed with the potential resolve that the kids have and accepts their challenge with a smile on his face. Ash used Pikachu and Lucario while Goh used Cinderace. Pikachu was out of commission almost immediately. When Lucario and Cinderace fought together, they put a good fight however, Mewtwo won, barely losing any energy. After his win, him and the abused Pokemon leave Ash
