Michael Afton, also known as Eggs Benedict, and Mike Schmidt, is the main protagonist of the ScottGames era of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.
  +
  +
He is the son of the notorious undead serial killer William Afton and the older brother of Elizabeth Afton and the Crying Child. Starting out as a cruel bully, after accidentally killing his brother, he decided to atone for his mistakes by becoming a technician at Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental so he could save his sister's soul.
  +
  +
After discovering the horrible truth about his father and being reduced to a living corpse by Elizabeth, he goes on a quest to "find" his father, eventually culminating in him working under Henry Emily, Afton's former business partner, while remaining unaware of his true plans.
  +
  +
It's also theorized that he took the identities of Fritz Smith and/or the unnamed Fazbear's Fright night guard during the search for his father.
  +
  +
He was voiced by PJ Heywood, who also voiced his father William Afton.

Appearance
  +

  +
The first instances of Michael's physical appearance being shown are in the minigames we play after completing Night 1 and Night 3 respectively on Five Nights at Freddy's 4, where he is seen with a pale skin complexion, what is most likely to be a short-sleeved grey shirt and a plastic mask of Foxy the Pirate with empty eye sockets to frighten his younger brother with. However, in the minigame we play after completing Night 5, Michael's complete appearance is revealed to us, being a tall and quite muscular teenager with a tan skin complexion while wearing what is likely to be a grey top tank dark blue shorts, grey shoes and his Foxy mask, which now has two pinprick white dot-like pupils within it's eye sockets.
  +
  +
In Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location, the only instance of Michael's appearance is in the Real Ending, where a young and male black silhouette in a pompadour-like hairstyle with white glowing pinprick dot-like pupils within his glowing bright purple irises reflected on the dirty mirror of his bathroom. In the Sister Location Custom Night minigame segments, Michael is seen as a young Caucasian man with a light skin tone, darkish brunette hair that seems to be combed over, a elongated smile just like his father's and long-sleeved purple shirt, dark blue jeans, brown shoes and dark blue eyes.
  +
  +
After being reanimated into a living corpse, he had dark purple skin due to his skin decomposing and rotting, with black empty eye sockets with two pinprick white dot-like pupils. He also seems to have completely lost his hair and his nose, as he barely has any teeth remaining on his mouth. The only piece of clothing he is seen wearing after becoming a living corpse are his pants, as he is seen barefoot and topless.
  +
  +
Personality
  +

  +
Michael's personality, like most things in the series, is left vague and mysterious unless one reads between the lines throughout the games he is featured in as well as the Survival Logbook which Michael used to write in.
  +
  +
When Michael was a teenager back in 1983, he was a terrible and ruthless person and arguably no better than his father. He was remorseless bully who teased his younger brother for no discernible reason and showed no care or consideration for his feelings and took sadistic pleasure in his emotional turmoil, It can be assumed he was been tormenting his brother for quite some time as the Fredbear plush says that Michael locked his brother in his room again, implying this isn't the first time he does this.
  +
  +
Michael also seemed to be an inconsiderate person, unable to see the limits of his pranks, this is evidenced when he once took his brother to Fredbear's Family Diner and then ditched him, despite him knowing that his brother hated it there. And if that wasn't enough, he locked him in the Parts & Service room in the diner the day before his birthday, completely ignoring his brother's pleas and tears. However, when his antics went too far and end up getting his brother killed, he showed immense guilt and remorse for his actions and apologized to him before he died. It’s possible Michael was crippled with guilt for his actions and everything he did throughout the franchise was in an effort to redeem himself.
  +

  +
During his adulthood during Sister Location it is seen he was matured and changed as a person, as well as being shown to be a friendly and popular person, as his neighbors are seen happily waving to him during the Custom Night mini-games. He also shown to be quite brave, as he kept going the underground facility of Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rentals to try and free his sister's soul despite the danger He was suggested to be a silent individual, never speaking or showing much emotion.
  +
  +
However, it’s later suggested he is a rather simplistic person. enjoying things like television, snacks and pizza, claiming he signed up for the job at Freddy’s because employees get free food, as he also states that eating increases his happiness. He is also shown to be quite nervous, easily stressed and paranoid, being disturbed by what happens at his job so much so he both slept on the job with one eye open, developed a bad habit of anxiously chewing bubblegum. He was also shown to be quite lazy and a slob, his office in the first game being quite messy and being fired for "odor", implying he doesn't take care of his hygiene (unless he was already a zombie by then). He is also shown to be a quite materialistic person, as in the Logbook, when asked what we would like for his end of the week bonus, he draws a basket full of money and stresses that he doesn’t want the basket of Exotic Butters.

  +
He is also shown to be sarcastic, cynical and spiteful through his annoyance at Fazbear Entertainment’s incompetence and disregard for their employees safety. Michael has also shown himself various times in the series to be brave, cunning and willing. For instance, despite the fact that many of the shenanigans he partakes in are extremely dangerous and could result in his death, he continues to do them and push through. He can also be very clever and resourceful as several of his tasks involved quick thinking and wits.
He is voiced by PJ Heywood.

  +
After his death and re-animation as a corpse, he became depressed and saddened with himself and claimed his only purpose of in life left was to "find" his father, which is why he showed no objection to burning to death after achieving this. His menacing tone at the end of said declaration implies that he understandably resents his father after learning everything the latter is responsible for. Ultimately, despite any of the flaws he might have had, Michael proved himself to be a genuinely good person who never gave up on himself and managed to remain strong for years to undo his mistakes and make things right.

Five Nights at Freddy's
  +
Michael first appears under the alias "Mike Schmidt" and becomes the night guard of the third Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Mike worked from the 7th to the 14th of November 1993, and found himself fending off the animatronics, who were hostile towards him. On the first night of the job, Mike listened to the recordings made by his predecessor, giving him advice on the night shift, and was given the excuse that the animatronics were only attacking because they saw humans as endoskeletons without costumes, when in all actuality, they were haunted by the spirits of the children his father murdered. While on shift, Mike suffered hallucinations, caused by all the paranormal activity going on around him. On Night 4, he heard Phone Guy die, and on Night 5, only heard a disturbing message. After Night 6, he was called "Employee of the month", due to his dedication, and praised for overtime. On Night 7, however, Mike tampered with the AI of the animatronics, and was subsequently fired. As well as this, other reasons were cited such as supposed unprofessionalism, and odor.

  +
Five Nights at Freddy's 4
In Five Nights at Freddy's 4, Michael Afton is seen to be a sadistic and manipulative trickster, who never cease to abuse emotionally and psychologically his brother. He seems to have no care about his brother's depression, as he torments him even in his own room. However, he is extremely remorseful for his actions as he came to his little brother's bedside, apologizing for his actions.

  +
Minigames
Five Nights at Freddy's Sister Location
  +
Michael's younger self appears in the minigames from 1983 as the main antagonist, particularly on the second, third, fourth and fifth nights. It is revealed on Night 5 that he is the child's older brother.
Michael appears in this game as the main protagonist. He works as a technician and was presumably hired by his father to free his sister's soul from Baby. After night 5, if the player chose to follow Baby's indications, Michael will get scooped by Ennard, who will take his body. If the player decided to do not follow Baby's indications, Michael will have to survive for the rest of the night from Ennard. He will then go home but Ennard will chase him.

  +
He hates his little brother for unknown reasons, and has apparently abused the child for a long time, so long to the point that it's one of the main reasons for his emotional breakdowns, besides an unknown event possibly related to spring-lock suits. Five days before his younger brother's birthday party, he locks him in his room, laughing sadistically from the outside. The Fredbear plush seems unfazed by what he is doing, only asking what he has done "this time". The plush constantly tries to help the child avoid Michael, guiding him with his words.
Transformation
After beating a Custom Night preset on Very Hard mode, you will be greeted to a secret minigame, which shows the events after Ennard had been stuffed inside of Michael.

  +
Four days before the party, the door is unlocked, but when the child enters the living room, Michael jumps out from behind the TV with a Foxy mask on, making the child fall on the floor and sob. Three days before the party Michael left the child at Fredbear's Diner, knowing well that his little brother hated that place. Two days before the party, when the child enters his bedroom, Mike jumps out from under the bed, causing the child to fall to the floor and break down again. One day before the party, Mike locks the child in the Parts/Services room, the child banging at the door sobbing all night.
In the first minigame, Michael looks like a normal man, wearing a purple shirt and blue pants. The people around him wave cheerfully.

  +
On the day of the party, the child's birthday, Michael and his bully friends, wearing the masks of Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica, surround the child and torment him, the one in the Chica or Bonnie mask commenting that the child is pathetic. He suddenly gets the idea to force the child to be right next to the Fredbear animatronic, the child screaming and shouting as he is dragged over to him. Michael decides to force his younger brother's head into the animatronic, saying that it's a "big kiss" to Fredbear. He underestimates the strength of the mechanical jaw, only excessively laughing with his bullies as his brother's head is stuck. The child's head gets stuck between the second row of teeth, and the machine overpowers his skull, crushing the entire head, causing Mike and the bullies to stop laughing and look in horror.
In the second minigame, Everything is the same just with him having a minor skin color change from tan-pink to tan. The people around him continue to wave cheerfully.

  +
After the bite, the child begins to die. Michael comes to his little brother's bedside, and apologizes in a brief statement. He had felt remorse for what he caused, and decided to put himself on the path to redemption.
In the third minigame, Michael's skin seems to be more of a green color. The first person he walks past has a bewildered expression on his face. The rest are normal, just waving cheerfully.

  +
Night Segments
In the fourth minigame, Michael's skin becomes a darker greenish-brown; his eyes are also now completely black. The last three people he walks by look in confusion.

  +
Michael is confirmed to be the main protagonist of the night segments. While the minigames take place in 1983, the nights are implied to take place after the first game, and thus somewhere after late 1993. In these dreams, Mike is a scared boy within his childhood bedroom, being haunted by nightmarish versions of the main four Fazbear animatronics. As well as facing them, from Night 5, Michael was also tormented by Nightmare Fredbear, before facing a dark, black bear known simply as Nightmare. Michael manages to survive him, and the nightmares presumably end after this.

  +
Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location
In the fifth minigame, he looks much more decrepit than he did in the past minigames, with a strange glowing in one eye. Everyone around him appear very concerned.

  +
Michael appears in this game as the main protagonist. Sometime after Freddy’s closed down he works as a technician ant Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental. He was sent there by his father to free his sister's soul from Circus Baby. However, it's equally possible that Afton sent Mike on a suicide mission.

  +
On night 1, Michael arrives at Circus Baby's, and HandUnit welcomes him, showing him how to check the animatronics' stages, and if they are not in their proper places, he must shock them to put them back on their stage. Michael successfully shocks Ballora and Funtime Foxy but even though he shocks Baby, she does not appear.
In the sixth minigame, his skin has turned a dull purple, now having a white glow in both of his eyes. He also acts to be more senile and less cheerful than he was before. There are much less people around him and one of them is hiding behind their house in fear.

  +
On night 2, Michael checked Ballora and Foxy, but when he checked Baby, the controlled shocks did not work, requiring HandUnit to shut down the system in a bid to restart the power supply. Baby began speaking to him, telling him to hide under the desk. After surviving the Bidybabs, in an optional scene, Michael is told by Baby of what happened to Elizabeth. Michael then crawled through Ballora Gallery, avoiding her by listening out for her music. He then reaches the Breaker Room, where he restarted all the systems while playing audio to keep Funtime Freddy from attacking him. Michael then crawls back through Ballora Gallery, and leaves the facility.
In the last minigame, he is hunched over and his skin is a dark purple colour. His appearance is now very reminiscent of purple guy. Everyone around him have hid behind their houses in dread.

  +
On night 3, Michael returned, checking Ballora and Funtime Foxy. He then ran through Funtime Auditorium while avoiding Funtime Foxy. Michael reached Parts and Service, where he performed a repair on Freddy, and caught Bon Bon in order to get Freddy's second power module. When he returned through Funtime Auditorium, Foxy attacked him, knocking him out.
Eventually, his body has a spasm, and he regurgitates the robotic parts belonging to Ennard into the sewer. He lies on the ground, presumably dead. The player then hears Circus Baby's voice repeating "you won't die", and then Michael gets revived while all of the animatronics' eyes show up in the sewer.

  +
On night 4, Michael woke up in a spring lock suit. Baby began talking to him, explaining she kidnapped him. Then, two technicians entered the building and sent Ballora to the Scooping Room, where Michael was. He then witnessed Ballora get scooped, and survive an attack of Minireenas.
Golden Freddy V. Hard Cutscene
After beating V. Hard Golden Freddy mode, Michael Afton, speaks to his father William Afton.

* "Father. It's me, Michael. I did it. I found it. It was right where you said it would be. They were all there. They didn't recognize at first but then they thought I was you. And I found her. I put her back together, just like you asked me to. She's free now. But something is wrong with me. I should be dead. But I'm not. I've been living in shadows. There is only one thing left for me to do now. I'm going to come find you. I'm going to come find you."

  +
On night 5, Michael checked the stages, only to see two hanged technicians. He then returned through Funtime Auditorium, and entered Parts and Service, to see a lifeless Circus Baby. She explained that she is pretending and something bad happened that day, and that Ballora's endoskeleton is after him. He then enters a random number sequence into a keypad that flips out of Baby's left central face plate. After entering the passcode, Michael gets a chip from her upper arm plate so she can communicate with him after she's been scooped.
<div style="display: block"><soundcloud url="https://soundcloud.com/user-343443909/michael-afton-fnaf-sister-location-cutscene

" height="20" auto_play="false"></soundcloud></div>

  +
If the player chose to follow Baby's instructions, Michael enters the Scooping Room, where he discovers that Baby was manipulating him, as part of a plan to escape the facility. Michael then has the Scooper used on him by Ennard, which kills him by having his insides extracted, leading to the amalgamation taking his body. This the game's canon ending.
After this, Springtrap walks in for a second before the screen goes black. Looking in the background, you see the words "Fazbear's Fright."

  +
Fake Ending
<div style="display: block"><soundcloud url="https://soundcloud.com/dfordeejay/demolition-inevitable" height="20" auto_play="true"></soundcloud></div>

  +
In the non-canon Fake Ending, Michael disobeys Baby's instructions and enters his father's Private Room. Left locked inside up until 6AM, Michel uses the office's resources to fend off Ennard, who uses Baby's voice to guilt him into giving up. When Ennard spoke with Elizabeth's voice, Michael was still unswayed, despite the emotional turmoil he must have been in. At 6AM, Michael was let out of the room and fired, and he returned home to watch the final episode of this season of The Immortal and the Restless. However, Ennard followed him home.

  +
Transformation
  +
After beating a Custom Night preset on Very Hard mode, you will be greeted to a secret minigame, which shows the events after Ennard had been stuffed inside of Michael.

  +
In the first three minigames, everything is mostly the same, "Michael"/Ennard having a walk while his neighbors greet him. In the fourth minigame, Michael's skin becomes a darker greenish-brown; his eyes are also now completely black. The last three people he walks by look in confusion. In the fifth minigame, he looks much more decrepit than he did in the past minigames, with a strange glowing in one eye. Everyone around him appear very concerned. In the sixth minigame, his skin has turned a dull purple, now having a white glow in both of his eyes. He also acts to be more senile and less cheerful than he was before. There are much fewer people around him and one of them is hiding behind their house in fear.
Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator
Michael returns in this game as the main protagonist taking the job of manager of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place. As well as working on the Pizzeria itself, Michael was also tasked with salvaging vintage animatronics which had appeared in the back alley, supposedly for parts. The first of these was Molten Freddy. Over the next few days, these included Springtrap, Scrap Baby, and Lefty. While in his office, Michael fended off the Animatronics, by luring them with sounds.

  +
In the last minigame, he is hunched over and his skin is a dark purple color. His appearance is now very reminiscent of a literal purple guy. Everyone around him have hid behind their houses in dread. Eventually, his body has a spasm, and he regurgitates the robotic parts belonging to Ennard into the sewer. His body collapses onto the ground, presumably dead. The player then hears Circus Baby's voice repeating "you won't die", and Michael stands up while Ennard's eyes show up in the sewer.
On the final night, Mike's boss revealed that the Pizzeria was a trap for all the remaining animatronics, with Mike luring them around the labyrinthine vents in circles. Henry praised Michael as his "brave volunteer", telling him that, while there had been a way out, he knew Michael did not want it. Henry then burnt the Pizzeria to free the souls, including Michael who finally died.

After beating V. Hard Golden Freddy mode, Michael Afton speaks to his father William, telling him that he was successful in freeing Baby and the others from the facility, but because they mistook him as William, they used him to escape. However, he somehow was left alive, but horribly disfigured, and because of this was forced to hide in the shadows. He then vows to William the one thing he's got left to do is come find him, darkly reiterating his vow. After this, Springtrap is seen walking out of the burnt-out remnants of Fazbear's Fright for a second before the screen goes black.

Appearance
  +
Michael returns in this game as the main protagonist, taking the job of manager of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place. After buying a Fazbear franchisee package, he was left with $100 as a starter budget, and was aided by Tutorial Unit. As well as working on the Pizzeria itself, he became acquainted with his managerial office, where he would do managerial duties such as ordering supplies, printing flyers and doing maintenance. He was told to prepare for a "big party" on Saturday, which would act as his "ultimate test". Michael was also tasked with salvaging vintage animatronics under paragraph 4 of his contract, which had appeared in the back alley, supposedly for parts. The first of these on Monday was Molten Freddy, the remnants of Ennard which were now led by Funtime Freddy.
Before being scooped Michael was a Caucasian male with brown hair and blue eyes. After that he was scooped his body started to get rotten until his skin became purple, he lost his hair and his eyes became black with white pupils.

  +
On Tuesday, as Michael worked on the Pizzeria, Freddy would enter the vents and began stalking Michael during his managerial shift, so that it could kill him to get to the children in the Pizzeria. Michael managed to keep him distracted with an audio system, and that evening found himself salvaging his own father, now in the form of Scraptrap. Over the next few days, Michael had to also deal with the more mundane struggles of running a Pizzeria, such as having enough money to buy high enough quality and safe attractions and animatronics, and deal with any potential lawsuits. Afterwards on Wednesday, Michael was hunted by both Scraptrap and Molten Freddy, both of which mocked him, but he was able use the audio lure, and his flashlight to fend them off. That evening, he salvaged his sister, who had become Scrap Baby, who joined their father and Freddy in the vents. On Thursday, however, Michael salvaged the mysterious Lefty, who was already purchasable. Unlike the others, Lefty was silent, and Michael found himself dealing with all four, as well as his barely functional office on Friday.
Personality
Michael's personality is unknown but from the minigames of Sister Location, it is seen that Michael has a lot of friends, making understand that he is a very friendly guy. From information gleaned from the Survival Logbook, He is a talented artist as seen from the many drawings on the pages of the logbook drawn in red pen, he has a nasty habit of chewing bubblegum as seen on one of the questions, he is quite sarcastic as seen from numerous shrewd comments written about the company, and is also fit for exercising around the block and wanting to join a self-defense class as seen on a filled in question.

On Saturday, after a hard shift of dealing with the Scrap animatronics, Mike's boss revealed that the Pizzeria was a trap for all the remaining animatronics, with Mike having kept them distracted by luring them around the labyrinth's vents in circles. Henry praised Michael as his "brave volunteer", telling him that, while he was planning a way out, he knew Michael wanted to stay behind to end his own suffering. Henry then lit the pizzeria ablaze in a deadly inferno killing everyone there including Michael, thus redeeming himself for what he did to his brother, putting an end to his suffering and allowing him to rest in peace with his brother and sister in the afterlife.

Trivia
Trivia
* It is theorized that Michael, Mike Schmidt, Jeremy Fitzgerald, Fritz Smith, and The Older Brother are one and the same as well as him being the Fazbear's Fright guard.
+
*It is heavily theorized that Fritz Smith and the Fazbear's Fright guard are both Michael.
  +
*Some people believed he was the child's father before Night 5, where he is revealed to be the brother.
* For the longest time, Michael Afton was thought to be the same entity as William Afton, but it was figured out in the V. Hard Golden Freddy cutscene in Sister Location that he was not.

  +
*Before his reveal as Michael, some people believed that the brother is Phone Guy, due to Phone Guy being nervous, working at the pizzeria for a very long time, knowing about the spring-lock suits and his favorite animatronic being Foxy (the brother wears a Foxy mask). However, the fact Phone Guy was an adult and worked at the pizzeria most likely since 1983 (because that was the time in which the spring-lock animatronics were still wearable and Phone Guy made the tapes for them) and that the brother was a kid during The Bite makes it impossible for them to be the same person.
* In FNaF: Survival Logbook, it's revealed that Michael knows about Nightmare Fredbear.

** This caused some fans of the series to confuse Michael, the protagonist for the Five Nights at Freddy's 4 nightmare segments, for his possible younger brother.
+
*Before the confirmation that he was the protagonist of the night segments in FNaF 4, there were several pieces of evidence suggesting the brother this to be the case:
* Michael is the second protagonist to die in the Five Nights at Freddy's series, the first being his unnamed brother from Five Nights at Freddy's 4's minigames.
+
**One of Phone Guy's phone calls from the original Five Nights at Freddy's can be heard in the background. The younger brother couldn't have heard this beforehand, as this call took place years after his passing.
  +
**There is an IV stand, a basket of flowers, and prescribed medication that randomly appears beside the bed. The younger brother wouldn't have seen this, as he was unconscious the entire time he was at the hospital, and even then, pills aren't made to help severely fractured craniums.
** Not counting the minigames, Michael is the first and only protagonist to officially die (from the fire).

  +
**The younger brother's skull was crushed, making him physically unable to dream. This would not make sense if he was the one experiencing the nightmares.
* When Michael said that "they" (the animatronics) mistook him for his father, that would explain why the animatronics come after you in the first and second games. Though, he was most likely talking about the Funtime Animatronics.

  +
**The FNAF Official Character Encyclopedia has put into question if Michael is the one experiencing the nightmares as it states that the Crying Child has been haunted by the nightmares. However, this could be chalked up to the book being unreliable.
*In FNaF: Survival Logbook, it’s revealed that Michael knows about Nightmare Fredbear. This does possibly mean that Michael had suffered horrific nightmares of facing nightmarish counterparts of his father's own creations after his little brother's death.

  +
*It's unknown what happened to Michael's bully friends since they're never seen again for the rest of the series. It can be assumed that the Bite of '83 traumatised them to the point where they broke off their friendship with Michael afterwards. Although, one could argue that they simply went their separate ways as time went on.
*It's been confirmed Foxy Bully is the big brother and Michael afton of Crying Child through the means of merchandise explicitly calling him The Brother,It would also give more motivation for Mike to save his sister.

  +
* His silhouette resembles the singer Rick Astley, as shown when Ennard looks in the mirror during the real/bad ending in Sister Location.
  +
* Michael is the second protagonist to die in the Five Nights at Freddy's series, the first being his younger brother from the Five Nights at Freddy's 4's minigames.
  +
*For the longest time after Sister Location<nowiki/>'s release, William Afton was thought to be the protagonist, but the V. Hard Golden Freddy cutscene in Sister Location revealed that he is not. However, it accidentally caused fans to believe that Michael is Springtrap, something that had to be debunked by series creator Scott Cawthon.
  +
* It is speculated that the TV show, The Immortal and the Restless, that Michael watches between the nights of Sister Location, where Vlad denies being the father of the baby, is a parallel between the relationship between William and Michael. It is because Vlad shares similarities with William, while the baby looks similar to his father like Michael does with his father.
  +
**In the Survival Logbook, Michael references the show, commenting he relates to Clara, as being the only person who seems to notice the strange occurrences as Freddy's, unlike Fazbear Entertainment's wilful ignorance.
  +
*In the Midnight Motorist mini-game in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, Michael is speculated to make an appearance as one of two characters. Within the "Orange Guy"'s house, a character wearing a gray shirt watching TV can be seen, who tells him to leave the other kid alone, since he had been through a rough day. It is speculated that this character is Michael, due to their resemblance and the color of their text voices being gray, and the other child he tells to the Orange Guy, who is also speculated to be William, is actually the Crying Child. On the other hand, others think the runaway kid is Michael, due to it being out of character for the Child to brazenly run away. Of course, this depends if the household being depicted in the minigame is the Afton home.
  +
* Due to his revival through Remnant, Michael is vulnerable to heat; in FFPS, if his office reaches too high a temperature, he passes out, and given that Remnant's effect wear off in extreme heat may actually kill him. This is how he dies in his final appearance.
  +
*It is speculated that the "Happiest Day" ending in FNAF World that can be accessed in the Old Man Consequences's area, depicts Michael with his siblings the Crying Child and Elizabeth watching tv together in the afterlife, after their souls had been set free and we're reunited.
  +
*In Ultimate Custom Night, there is an anime series depicting a rivalry between the samurais the Bear and the Fox. It's speculated by fans that the Fox represents Michael, while the Bear represents the Crying Child. The Bear tries to assault the Fox for revenge, but the Fox is always a step ahead of him and humiliates the Bear when the latter fails, similar to the brother.
  +
**In one of these cutscenes, the Bear notes that the Fox enjoys watching TV, the "Dog" tells the Fox that his white clothes have been colored pink (after the Fox forced the Bear to do his laundry), and in the last cutscenes the Fox expresses a desire to go on a vacation. Michael often watches TV, and in the Five Nights at Freddy's: Survival Logbook he also expresses via his drawings of a desire to go on a vacation, and the Fox's clothes being colored pink might explain why Michael is seen wearing purple shirt (the brother's gray shirt after being colored pink would most likely result in purple coloration).
  +
*The masks that Michael and his friends wear, are possibly the same masks that the player can wear in a level of Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted: Curse of Dreadbear.
  +
*It's theorized that Glamrock Freddy is possessed by either Michael's undead soul, or his leftover agony which still resides in Freddy Fazbear Pizza Place.
  +
**If this theory is true, it means that Glamrock Freddy could represent Michael while Gregory and Vanessa represent the crying child and Elizabeth, respectively.
  +
** However, this theory could be debunked since later on Roxanne Wolf displays a very similar caring behavior towards Cassie, meaning that Glamrock Freddy was just programmed that way and isn't possessed.

Father. It's me, Michael. I did it. I found it. It was right where you said it would be. They were all there. They didn't... recognize me at first but then, they thought I was you. (scoffs) And I found her. I put her back together, just like you asked me to. She's free now. But something is wrong with me. I should be dead. But I'm not. I've been living in shadows. There is only one thing left for me to do now. I'm going to come find you. I'm going to come find you...
~ Michael Afton talking to his father in the final cutscene of Sister Location.
Can you hear me? I don't know if you can hear me... I'm sorry.
~ Michael apologizing to his brother before dying, thus starting his path for redemption.

Michael Afton, also known as Eggs Benedict, and Mike Schmidt, is the main protagonist of the ScottGames era of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.

After discovering the horrible truth about his father and being reduced to a living corpse by Elizabeth, he goes on a quest to "find" his father, eventually culminating in him working under Henry Emily, Afton's former business partner, while remaining unaware of his true plans.

It's also theorized that he took the identities of Fritz Smith and/or the unnamed Fazbear's Fright night guard during the search for his father.

He was voiced by PJ Heywood, who also voiced his father William Afton.

Appearance

They didn't... recognize me at first but then, they thought I was you.
~ Michael Afton to his father about the Funtime Animatronics, confirming that the two look similar.

Personality

What did he do this time? He locked you in your room again. Don't be scared. I am here with you.
~ The Fredbear plush comforting the Crying Child after Michael locked him in his room.

Michael's personality, like most things in the series, is left vague and mysterious unless one reads between the lines throughout the games he is featured in as well as the Survival Logbook which Michael used to write in.

I'd say they sound similar, but they definitely don't sound the same to me. William is clearly up to no good. Michael is broken
~ PJ Heywood citing the differences between William and Michael when asked why both characters sound the same on Reddit.

Biography

Five Nights at Freddy's

Five Nights at Freddy's 4

Minigames

Michael's younger self appears in the minigames from 1983 as the main antagonist, particularly on the second, third, fourth and fifth nights. It is revealed on Night 5 that he is the child's older brother.

After the bite, the child begins to die. Michael comes to his little brother's bedside, and apologizes in a brief statement. He had felt remorse for what he caused, and decided to put himself on the path to redemption.

Night Segments

Michael is confirmed to be the main protagonist of the night segments. While the minigames take place in 1983, the nights are implied to take place after the first game, and thus somewhere after late 1993. In these dreams, Mike is a scared boy within his childhood bedroom, being haunted by nightmarish versions of the main four Fazbear animatronics. As well as facing them, from Night 5, Michael was also tormented by Nightmare Fredbear, before facing a dark, black bear known simply as Nightmare. Michael manages to survive him, and the nightmares presumably end after this.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location

Michael appears in this game as the main protagonist. Sometime after Freddy’s closed down he works as a technician ant Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental. He was sent there by his father to free his sister's soul from Circus Baby. However, it's equally possible that Afton sent Mike on a suicide mission.

Fake Ending

In the non-canon Fake Ending, Michael disobeys Baby's instructions and enters his father's Private Room. Left locked inside up until 6AM, Michel uses the office's resources to fend off Ennard, who uses Baby's voice to guilt him into giving up. When Ennard spoke with Elizabeth's voice, Michael was still unswayed, despite the emotional turmoil he must have been in. At 6AM, Michael was let out of the room and fired, and he returned home to watch the final episode of this season of The Immortal and the Restless. However, Ennard followed him home.

Transformation

After beating a Custom Night preset on Very Hard mode, you will be greeted to a secret minigame, which shows the events after Ennard had been stuffed inside of Michael.

Golden Freddy V. Hard Cutscene

After beating V.

Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator and death

Fazbear Frights

A version of Mike appears in the story "You're the Band" as the tritagonist. In the story he helps a single mother exorcise the spirit possessing Freddy from her son.

It's speculated that Alec, Pete Dinglewood, Tyler Mackenzie, Toby Billings, Angel, Hudson, Joel D'Agostino and Mott are parallels of Michael.

Trivia

  • It is heavily theorized that Fritz Smith and the Fazbear's Fright guard are both Michael.
  • Some people believed he was the child's father before Night 5, where he is revealed to be the brother.
  • Before his reveal as Michael, some people believed that the brother is Phone Guy, due to Phone Guy being nervous, working at the pizzeria for a very long time, knowing about the spring-lock suits and his favorite animatronic being Foxy (the brother wears a Foxy mask). However, the fact Phone Guy was an adult and worked at the pizzeria most likely since 1983 (because that was the time in which the spring-lock animatronics were still wearable and Phone Guy made the tapes for them) and that the brother was a kid during The Bite makes it impossible for them to be the same person.
  • Before the confirmation that he was the protagonist of the night segments in FNaF 4, there were several pieces of evidence suggesting the brother this to be the case:
    • One of Phone Guy's phone calls from the original Five Nights at Freddy's can be heard in the background. The younger brother couldn't have heard this beforehand, as this call took place years after his passing.
    • There is an IV stand, a basket of flowers, and prescribed medication that randomly appears beside the bed. The younger brother wouldn't have seen this, as he was unconscious the entire time he was at the hospital, and even then, pills aren't made to help severely fractured craniums.
    • The younger brother's skull was crushed, making him physically unable to dream. This would not make sense if he was the one experiencing the nightmares.
    • The FNAF Official Character Encyclopedia has put into question if Michael is the one experiencing the nightmares as it states that the Crying Child has been haunted by the nightmares. However, this could be chalked up to the book being unreliable.
  • It's unknown what happened to Michael's bully friends since they're never seen again for the rest of the series. It can be assumed that the Bite of '83 traumatised them to the point where they broke off their friendship with Michael afterwards. Although, one could argue that they simply went their separate ways as time went on.
  • His silhouette resembles the singer Rick Astley, as shown when Ennard looks in the mirror during the real/bad ending in Sister Location.
  • Michael is the second protagonist to die in the Five Nights at Freddy's series, the first being his younger brother from the Five Nights at Freddy's 4's minigames.
  • For the longest time after Sister Location's release, William Afton was thought to be the protagonist, but the V. Hard Golden Freddy cutscene in Sister Location revealed that he is not. However, it accidentally caused fans to believe that Michael is Springtrap, something that had to be debunked by series creator Scott Cawthon.
  • It is speculated that the TV show, The Immortal and the Restless, that Michael watches between the nights of Sister Location, where Vlad denies being the father of the baby, is a parallel between the relationship between William and Michael. It is because Vlad shares similarities with William, while the baby looks similar to his father like Michael does with his father.
    • In the Survival Logbook, Michael references the show, commenting he relates to Clara, as being the only person who seems to notice the strange occurrences as Freddy's, unlike Fazbear Entertainment's wilful ignorance.
  • In the Midnight Motorist mini-game in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, Michael is speculated to make an appearance as one of two characters.
  • Due to his revival through Remnant, Michael is vulnerable to heat; in FFPS, if his office reaches too high a temperature, he passes out, and given that Remnant's effect wear off in extreme heat may actually kill him. This is how he dies in his final appearance.
  • Happiest Day fnaf

Three figures watching tv in FNAF World's "Happiest Day" ending, believed to be Michael hugging his younger siblings after reuniting in the afterlife.

It is speculated that the "Happiest Day" ending in FNAF World that can be accessed in the Old Man Consequences's area, depicts Michael with his siblings the Crying Child and Elizabeth watching tv together in the afterlife, after their souls had been set free and we're reunited.
  • In Ultimate Custom Night, there is an anime series depicting a rivalry between the samurais the Bear and the Fox. It's speculated by fans that the Fox represents Michael, while the Bear represents the Crying Child. The Bear tries to assault the Fox for revenge, but the Fox is always a step ahead of him and humiliates the Bear when the latter fails, similar to the brother.
    • In one of these cutscenes, the Bear notes that the Fox enjoys watching TV, the "Dog" tells the Fox that his white clothes have been colored pink (after the Fox forced the Bear to do his laundry), and in the last cutscenes the Fox expresses a desire to go on a vacation.
  • The masks that Michael and his friends wear, are possibly the same masks that the player can wear in a level of Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted: Curse of Dreadbear.
  • It's theorized that Glamrock Freddy is possessed by either Michael's undead soul, or his leftover agony which still resides in Freddy Fazbear Pizza Place.
    • If this theory is true, it means that Glamrock Freddy could represent Michael while Gregory and Vanessa represent the crying child and Elizabeth, respectively.
    • However, this theory could be debunked since later on Roxanne Wolf displays a very similar caring behavior towards Cassie, meaning that Glamrock Freddy was just programmed that way and isn't possessed.
