Michelle Greene is the main protagonist of the 2025 film, The Electric State, based on the 2018 graphic novel.

A troubled teenager, Michelle struggles through life ever since her parents died in a car accident and her brother Christopher has disappeared. It was not until she had found out that Christopher was alive and sets out on a journey to find him with the help of veteran John D. Keats and a band of robots.

Michelle is portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown, who also played Eleven in Stranger Things, Madison Russell in the MonsterVerse, Enola Holmes in the series of the same name and Elodie in Damsel.

Biography[]

Michelle was born in 1974 in West Coast City, USA. She grew up with her younger brother Christopher and they bonded over watching the cartoon series Cosmo. In 1990, there was a war between humans and robots led by Sentre CEO Ethan Stake, resulting in the robots taking over. During the war, Michelle was severly hospitilized and her parents were killed. While recovering, she was told by her healer, Dr. Clark Amherst, that Christopher also died in the attack.

Four years later, Michelle now lives with an abusive foster dad named Ted, who strapped an ankle monitor on her so she can't leave the house. One day, she finds the robot Cosmo from the cartoon show in her bedroom. After she fixes his language protocol so he can talk properly, Cosmo reveals that he is being controlled by Christopher, who survived the war and had his consciousness transferred onto Cosmo. Cosmo breaks Michelle's ankle monitor and they escape to find Christopher.

While on the trip, Michelle and Cosmo meet another human survivor named John D. Keats and his robot companion Herman. Together, they seek refuge in an abandoned robot zone led by a robot version of the Mr. Peanut mascot. There, they find Dr. Amherst who confesses that he lied about Christopher's death to keep him safe from the robots. When Michelle demands the truth, Amherst reveals he's at the Sentre facility in Seattle where his consciousness is used to power all all the Sentre robots and Amherst uploaded his mind onto Cosmo to partially free him. He also informed Michelle that her brother would have died had they not done what they did.

Michelle wants to go save Chris and although she initially agrees to spend the night at the zone, she eventually convinces the robots to help her when Sentre's robots break in and capture Cosmo to remove Christopher's consciousness from him. Amherst sacrifices himself to Skate's robots, distracting them long enough for Michelle to sneak into Sentre. She finds Christopher bald and comatose within the pod keeping him alive. Since he can't hear her from outside, she goes into his mind using a VR helmet. She finds Chris in a construct of their living room and begs him to come back with her; however, Chris refuses since he won't survive in his own, fatally wounded body. He wants Michelle to unplug the pod and kill him since it's the only way to shut off the robots and end their attack. Michelle is too reluctant to do so since she just found her brother and can't bring herself to say goodbye, but Chris promises he won't leave since he'll still exist in her memories. Back in the real world, Michelle tearfully shuts off the pod and (presumably) kills Christopher, saving the world from the robots.

With the threat ended, Michelle does a live broadcast about how humans and robots should co-exist and also exposes Skate for the tyrant he is, resulting in his arrest. Cosmo's seemingly lifeless body is thrown in dump where it is last seen barely moving, hinting Chris might still be alive within Cosmo.

Personality[]

Michelle is best described as a rebellious teenage girl, repeatedly sucking up to her foster father and refusing to let him control her. Her rebellious side eventually develops into being a freedom fighter as she wants equality between human and robots to preserve peace. Despite the robot war terrorizing humanity, she herself has no prejudice against robots and living machines, fully acknowledging them as people with feelings as opposed to controllable objects and refuses to hold a grudge against them. This is best exemplified by her being a fan of Cosmo the robot show and when she comforted Keats about Herman's supposed death during the climatic battle. She even showed concern for Mr. Peanut when his bolted hat was torn off by Sentre's robots. Another major aspect in Michelle's personality is her love for her family as she was determined to find Chris at any cost and was saddened by his "death".
