My name is Miguel O'Hara. I'm this dimension's one and only Spider-Man. At least I was. But I'm not like the others. I don't always like what I have to do. But I know I have to be the one to do it. I've given up too much to stop now.
~ Miguel's inner monologue.
You don't get it! You're an Anomaly! (...) Everywhere you go, you're an Anomaly! YOU'RE THE ORIGINAL ANOMALY! (...) The spider that gave you your powers, wasn't from your dimension! It was never supposed to bite you! (...) There's a world out there with no Spider-Man to protect them, because it bit you instead! You're not supposed to BE Spider-Man! (...) You're a MISTAKE!!! If you hadn’t been bit, your Peter Parker would have lived! Instead he died saving YOU! He would have stopped the collider before it even went off, Spot wouldn’t exist, and NONE of this would have happened! And all this time, I have been the only one holding it all together! You don't belong here. You never did. (...) That's exactly what you are, You're just a kid who has no...idea...what he's DOING!!!
~ Miguel's breakdown as he furiously reveals to Miles that him becoming Spider-Man was a complete accident, and his most famous quote.

Miguel O'Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, is the secondary antagonist of Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Verse film trilogy.

He is the Spider-Man of Earth-928 and the founder of the Spider Society who has developed reliable multiverse travel with the help of his AI assistant, LYLA.

Alongside the society, Miguel seeks to both deal with anomalies, villains from other universes who were accidentally brought to other universes, and fix canon events, the latter of which brings him into conflict with Miles Morales.

He is voiced by Oscar Isaac, who also portrayed Moon Knight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Poe Dameron in the Star Wars franchise, Gomez Addams in The Addams Family animated films, and Duke Leto Atreides in Dune.

Appearance[]

Miguel is a young, muscular man who has a fair tan complexion and a short brown hair. He also wears a dark blue superhero suit with a red skull-like spider symbol and a menacing mask to match. His eyes have the ability to turn red and he possesses a pair of fangs.

Personality[]

Y'know, you're the only Spider-Man who isn't funny. We're supposed to be funny.
~ Peter Parker about Miguel's extremely serious attitude.

In the end-credits scene of Into the Spider-Verse, Miguel was shown to have a very sarcastic, yet more laid-back attitude. He spoke coolly about things, even when Lyla tells him that his multiverse-hopping device could kill him.

However, by the time of Across the Spider-Verse, Miguel is completely uncompromising in maintaining the status quo of each universe he oversees. His sense of humor is gone, and he is dead serious about protecting the Spider-Verse. In his mind, there is only one way anyone's story should play out due to seemingly witnessing first-hand the consequences of interfering with a universe's canon events, and he gets incredibly aggravated when there's deviations. It fuels his vendetta against Miles, who unintentionally became Spider-Man at the expense of another universe because the spider that bit him had come from the other universe. Because of this view, it blinded him in realizing he underestimated the latter's potential after Miles broke free and successfully lured Miguel and most of the spider-people from the HQ, allowing him to escape.

However, Miguel has genuinely good intentions and deep, serious pain driving his actions, leading him to the extremes he takes in the film. His belief that disrupting "canon events" leads to calamity, a belief bolstered by the loss of the homeworld and family he adopted as his own, which may have been caused by his own actions, drives him to enforce certain events in the lives of other Spider-People, such as the deaths of police captains they're close to, to stop such an event from happening again. Furthermore, despite his unjustified disliking of Miles, he was at least sympathetic to him when breaking the news that he had to let his dad die since it was a canon event and was genuinely apologetic to him when he briefly trapped him in a cocoon.

Powers and Abilities[]

Like the original Spider-Man, Miguel has superhuman strength and enhanced reflexes. However, since his transformation was much more brutal than that of Peter, Miguel has claws on his hands and feet, which he uses to climb through walls, although this implies that he lacks natural wall-climbing like most Spider-Men. Miguel also has a pair of fangs that secrete a paralyzing venom which comes in handy when Spider-Man 2099 needs to subdue a foe. Miguel also has iconic red eyes that allow him to see in the dark. His hypersensitive eyes also allow Miguel to see further away than any human being. Finally, Miguel’s suit is capable of generating red-colored laser web lines from its red areas on his wrists. These webs cannot be affected by outside forces in the same way physical webbing can (for example, strong winds and gravity).

It's heavily implied that Miguel's powers are temporary and that he needs to keep injecting himself whenever the effects of the previous usage wear off, given his continuous injections of some sort of Spider modification serum, although this might not be the case. Furthermore, unlike most Spider-People, Miguel does not possess Spider-Sense which leaves him more vulnerable to surprise attacks and incoming threats.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Miguel O'Hara is a superhero from the future who took up the mantle of Spider-Man after gaining similar powers to the original through an experimental procedure. It is assumed that this version of Miguel possesses a similar early life to his original counterpart.

Into the Spider-Verse[]

From their base in the future, Miguel and his holographic companion Lyla monitored the activation of the Super-Collider and meeting of the Spider-Gang, anticipating the potential collapse of the multiverse. Miguel left for about two hours and ended up missing the incident's conclusion and caught up to the events by Lyla.

Upon his return, he found that the prototype of their "gizmo", made to help him make an "autonomous multiverse jump", was completed. Miguel immediately put it on and decided to jump to Earth-67. Once there, Miguel landed in front of that dimension's Spider-Man and immediately tried to convince him to go with him, but instead got into a pointing argument with him. He eventually managed to recruit him into the Spider-Verse.

Across the Spider-Verse[]

Miguel eventually discovered an alternate universe where he had a family and a daughter; when his alternate self died, he took his place and raised his daughter until that universe started to crumble. Along with Peter B. Parker and several other Spider-heroes, Miguel tried to save as many people as possible but to no avail. Failing to prevent the deaths of all the people of that reality, including his daughter's, Miguel was left deeply scarred by that event. He eventually discovered that the aftermath of Kingpin's super collider has left holes in the multiverse, allowing different supervillains to go to different universe.

In order to stop the supervillains, as well as protect "Canon Events", Miguel created the Spider-Society, a group of Spider-People dedicated to returning those individuals to their dimension. He also made sure that each hero in their universe's history was following the intended path to avoid anomalies that may lead to their destruction.

Trying to return a renaissance version of the Vulture to his dimension, Miguel traveled to Earth-65B where he met an alternate Gwen Stacy, one of the people involved in the Super Collider event. Despite his initial reluctance to have her join the Spider-Society, his second-in-command Jessica Drew convinced him to let her join after Gwen's father discovered her secret identity and tried to arrest her, seeing that she had nowhere to go now.

Later, Miguel learned that Jonathan Ohnn was affected by the collider on Earth-1610B and, over a year later, would use the Spotted Dimension to travel anywhere within the Multiverse. Jonathan then successfully used a miniature particle collider he created to boost his traversal powers. After Gwen, Hobie Brown, and Miles Morales failed to stop him on Earth-50101B, he ordered all three of them to travel to his universe.

During his meeting with Miles, an infuriated Miguel reveals to him that there were certain canon events that each Spider-Person needs to experience to ensure the survival of their respective universes. After Miles refused to accept the fact that his father dying was a canon event, he escaped Miguel's prison and ran way, he and the rest of the Spider-Society following in pursuit.

Miguel eventually caught up to Miles and furiously reveals to him that the spider that bit him was from an alternate universe that came to his world due Kingpin's collider and Miles was never meant to be Spider-Man, calling him a mistake. Despite this revelation, Miles refused to give up, before revealing to Miguel that his plan was to get the Spider-people away from HQ. Miguel was surprised when Miles took the opportunity to escape and use the dimension portal and seemingly managed to return to his universe (in reality going to the universe of the Spider that bit him). The now-enraged Miguel then banished Gwen and sent her home, claiming she was a liability, before going to Miles' home dimension with Scarlet Spider and Jessica Drew to find Miles and Spot.

Quotes[]

Miguel: Been really fun cleaning up your shocking mess, by the way!
Gwen: What mess?
Miguel: Kingpin’s collider!
Vulture: What are you guys talking about?
Gwen and Miguel: None of your business! Nosy!/You shut up! Cállate!
Gwen: We saved the multiverse!
Miguel: You left a hole wide enough for guys like
him to randomly get shot into the wrong dimension! Now I’m stuck putting everybody back where they belong before all of time and space collapses!
~ Miguel explaining the ramifications of Gwen and her crew stopping Kingpin.
Miguel: And don’t even get me started on Doctor Strange and the little nerd back on Earth-199999!
Gwen: Who's Doctor Strange? Sounds like he maybe shouldn't practice medicine.
~ Spider-Man 2099 talking about Earth 199999 (MCU).
YOU BLEW ANOTHER HOLE IN THE MULTIVERSE!
~ Miguel furiously telling Miles the truth that he blew a Hole in the Multiverse.
“Spider-Verse”. That’s… stupid. It’s called the Arachnoid Humanoid Poly-Multiverse. Which sounds... stupid, too, I guess.
~ Miguel talking about what the Multiverse is called.
You have a choice between saving one person and saving an entire world. Every world.
~ Miguel O'Hara to Miles Morales
Miles, we all want to live the life we wish we had. Believe me, I have tried. And the harder I tried, the more damage I did... You can't have it all kid.
~ Miguel telling Miles that breaking the canon only makes things worse.
All stations, stop what you’re doing and stop Spider-Man. (Most of the Spider-Society points at each other saying "You?" since Miguel didn't specify which Spider-Man) Ay, coño, MILES! Miles Morales, he's entering sector four!
~ Miguel ordering everyone in the Spider-Society to apprehend Miles when he makes a break for it.
Miles: What are those, claws? Dude, are you sure you’re even Spider-Man?
Miguel: Are YOU?! Who do you think you are? Really?!
~ Miguel infuriated by the irony of Miles' sarcastic comment.
Gwen: I'm not coming.
Miguel: You're right.
Gwen: What....What the hell?!
Miguel: Go home, Gwen.
Gwen: We are supposed to be the good guys.
Miguel: We are. We are.
~ Miguel banishes Gwen and sending her home. (Miguel revealing his true nature at Gwen and Spider-Society)

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, and likely in this franchise, Miguel O'Hara is Spider-Man 2099 from Earth-928, a possible future of the mainstream dimension Earth-616.
  • According to Bob Persichetti, Miguel wasn't the only candidate for the post-credits Spider-Man that would hint at the possibilities for the future of the franchise. The decision to choose Miguel stemmed from the director and creators' perception that the "fans were very vocally disappointed to learn that O'Hara wasn't part of the central Into the Spider-Verse team."
  • He is one of the first characters who would take up the Spider-Man mantle and serve the role as a heroical antagonist; albeit a heroic secondary antagonist.
  • A fan theory heavily suggests that Miguel could be The Prowler due to his flashback selves being purple (his current self) and green (his dead self he replaced himself with); which are colors that the original Prowler has. Alongside a split second of of the movie when Miguel chases Miles with Miguel briefly being shown in a purple and green overlay as Miles glitches to his first Spider-Man suit, his theme being similar to The Prowler, Miles Morales's Earth-42 counterpart from another timeline being The Prowler, Miguel's claws and cape, and Miles even asking if Miguel is really Spider-Man due to the claws he notices, as well as Miguel being more brutal after Miles' comment.[1]
  • His "Canon event" quote and his theme were both turned into Internet memes, with the latter being even mixed with George Michael's Careless Whisper song.
  • His line, "You can't run forever, kid!" from all the trailers wasn't in the movie.
  • Miguel’s zodiac sign is Virgo, as he was born on September 19th in 2070. This could imply he's 29 years old.
    • However, most people often mistake this sign of his for Scorpio.
  • Miguel serves as an example of what Miles could've become if he didn't learn to move on from one of his family members' death and let it get the best of him.
  • Many people think Miguel O'Hara looks like British actor Christian Bale (Who Played Batman from The Dark Knight).
