Millie DeBruin (nee Millie Jacobsen) is the main supporting antagonist of the Rizzoli & Isles novel "Die Again". Millie is the survivor of a massacre in Botswana perpetrated by serial killer Dr. Alan Rhodes.

Biography[]

Millie is a British national who previously worked as a bookshop employee. She was seduced by Richard Renwick, a adventure franchise writer, into a relationship, but he constantly domineered her, while at the same time vainly wanting his life experiences mattering more than hers and turning to other women to flirt with. Millie constantly held her tongue, but the relationship strained too much, and it came to a head when Renwick signed them both up for a safari expedition in Botswana. They were guided by South African national Johnny Posthumus and his Shangaan-South African colleague, tracker Clarence Nghobo. The other tourists consisted of an American going by the name "Elliot Gott", Japanese couple Isao and Keiko Matsunaga, and Dutch nationals Sylvia van Ofwegen and Vivian Kruiswyk. Unbeknownest to the group, "Elliot" was really Rhodes, a wildlife biologist and a serial killer in just his preferred circumstances, among a group in the isolated wilderness he intends to slowly pick off. Rhodes killed Elliot beforehand and stole his identity so he could infiltrate the expedition, painting a presentation of himself as merely a socially awkward American.

Millie hated the expedition, but she bonded with the guides and the Matsunagas most. Renwick wanted all sorts of unrealistic experiences and tried to overcompensate by usurping Johnny's position as leader of the group, but Johnny noticed his cockinesss and kept him where he was to keep him and other from being in danger. Johnny also noticed the strain between Millie and Renwick, so he specifically grew closer to her in return, and she began to fall in love with him. Renwick was furious, disregarding how he himself continuously hit on Sylvia and Vivian since they met. But As Rhodes killed the group, starting with Clarence, then Isao, even sabotaging the vehicle to strand everyone, even cutting a hole in his tent and lying a snake was in it, resentments flared into distrust and rage. Renwick suspected Johnny and turned the surviving group on him, but Millie defended him most of all, especially since Johnny saved her life by a shooting a leopard near attacking her. When Millie tried to stop Renwick, he hit her, and as the group were so intent on turning on him that even Keiko, still grieving Isao, hit Johnny with a rock, Johnny agreed to leave. He pleaded for Millie to join him, but Millie was too shaken to answer, and he left. This was when Rhodes got the shotgun and killed the rest of the group, save for Millie, who fled into the Savannah and was later rescued. With all the publicity over Millie surviving, she refused to return to the UK, settling in the Western Cape in South Africa and marrying Christopher DeBruin, with whom she raised children.

Rhodes, in the meantime, continued his killing spree across America, from targeting isolated parties to hunting whoever he chose to string up like wildlife and eviscerate alive. But he soon turned to killing witnesses, ranging from people who had possessions from the victims of the Botswana massacre to the grieving families who could identify him. The Boston police started investigating him when he killed Elliot's father Leon, the Leon's ex-girlfriend Jodi Underwood, as they had photos of Elliot could prove Rhodes impersonated him on the expedition. When the massacre was discovered, Detective Jane Rizzoli and Agent Gabriel Dean worked with an Interpol friend of Dean's to speak to Millie. She was oppositional to going to America at first, but understanding the gravity of Rhodes' crimes and the danger she was in if he hunted her, she eventually took the flight and stayed with Dr. Maura Isles. But Rhodes soon found out, breaking into the home at night and trying to strangle her. Millie stopped him by slashing his face with an open cat food can, then stabbing him to death with a kitchen knife. When Millie was told the truth, that Johnny was innocent all along after believing for years that he was the killer, she resolved her long-standing dread she carried from her experiences and returned to her family.
