Biography[]
Past[]
65 million years ago, Mills lived on the planet Somaris somewhere in the Milky Way. He was a deep space pilot who would routinely fly to and from the various planets colonized by his species, also being trained in combat and survival. He eventually married a woman named Alya, who bore him a daughter named Nevine. Mills and Nevine built a very close bond, despite Mills having to constantly leave for trips to space, although they were usually for short periods of time. Then, Nevine developed a terminal illness, and Mills didn't have the funds to pay for her treatment. At Alya's urging, Mills decided to accept a role as the pilot of an expedition that would give him enough money to pay for Nevine's treatment, but the mission would go through deeper, uncharted regions of space, and thus would separate Mills from his family for two years. Mills told Nevine about the mission when he and Alya went to a beach with her, where Mills also tried to teach Nevine a way to whistle.
Mills eventually left for his mission, flying passengers held in cryogenic stasis. During the mission, he received video calls from Nevine, who first told him how she was doing well, before suddenly falling into a more severe stage of her illness, making her angry and bitter at Mills for not being there for her, although she still said that she loved him. Then, still in the midst of the expedition, Nevine died from her illness, Alya sending the news to Mills and trying to assure him that she peacefully passed away.
65[]
During the return trip to Somaris, Mills slept as the ship automatically flew itself through an uncharted system. Then, the ship suddenly flew through an uncharted shower of asteroids, damaging it and forcing it down over the nearest planet. Mills, awakening from the impacts and alarms being set off, tried to land the ship and send a distress signal, but the ship crashed regardless, splitting in half on the way down, resulting in all the cryogenic pods being jettisoned, although Mills survived in the cockpit, still taking some injuries from debris.
Awakening, and having some flashbacks to Nevine, Mills used a medical device to crudely seal up his wound, donned a space suit, and inspected the crash site, finding the passengers dead, many of them thrown out of their pods and strewn around a marsh that the ship crashed into. Still distraught over Nevine's death, Mills nearly broke down, reentering the ship and sending a message that retrieval was not necessary, drawing a pistol and contemplating suicide while having flashbacks to Nevine, but couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger. He then got a signal from a lost pod, indicating that its inhabitant was still alive, and discovered that the atmosphere was breathable. Realizing that he had a duty to get the passenger back to Somaris, he set out to find the pod, locating it in the marsh and opening it, finding that the inhabitant was a young girl.
Taking the girl back to the cockpit, Mills managed to reactivate power in what was left of it, finding that his living quarters were still intact enough for the girl to stay in, as she had still not woken up from the cryogenic stasis. While waiting for her to wake up, Mills left the ship again to look over the landscape, finding a cliff from which he could see a mountain 15 kilometers away, using a scanning tool to discover that the other half of the ship, holding a still-functional escape craft, was atop the mountain. He then used the device to observe a group of small dinosaurs being hunted by a considerably larger theropod, until he was abruptly attacked by a small carnivorous dinosaur. He managed to throw the creature off himself and then kill it with his rifle, getting away from the cliff as fast as possible to return to the ship, only to find that the girl had left the ship, finding her outside. However, she ran from Mills, who was forced to get her back to the ship, discovering that he couldn't understand her, as she came from one of the outer colonies, and thus spoke a language he was unfamiliar with, not helped by his translator being lost in the crash. He managed to use the passenger manifest to discover that the girl's name was Koa, and used some red powder to try to communicate with her through crude drawings, attempting to express that they had to get atop the mountain to go home. Koa instead understood the word "family", and believed that her parents were atop the mountain, expressing it through another drawing. Mills, deciding to play along to encourage her to go with him, lied about her parents being alive, and told her to be quiet and move so that they could cut across the landscape as fast as possible.
The two set out, Mills taking a backpack with several tools and weapons for survival, keeping his guard up for hostile lifeforms, and had to take away some poisonous berries that Koa picked, trying to tell her they were bad to eat after his canteen scanned them. He then tried to stop Koa from saving a baby dinosaur trapped in tar, which was quickly attacked and killed by predators shortly after being freed, with Mills forced to hide Koa behind rocks and keep her quiet until the dinosaurs left. They kept moving after that, Mills climbing up a tree to get a better view of the mountain, only for a massive spider to startle him, making the branch he was standing on break. Mills fell to the ground and dislocated his shoulder, as several large carnivorous creatures began advancing on them, but Mills managed to relocate his shoulder with Koa's help, taking his gun and killing a few of the dinosaurs while ordering Koa to run. Mills stayed behind to fend off the remaining dinosaurs, and was pounced on by one, but managed to shoot it before it could bite him, allowing him to get to Koa just as she was cornered by two dinosaurs that had followed her, shooting both of them before they could reach the girl.
Mills decided to let Koa rest from the events when she refused to keep moving, even turning away from him, with Mills keeping watch until evening fell. After they got moving again, they found a cave to spend the night, where Mills set up motion detectors in a circle around them, and told Koa to go to sleep, although he spent some time watching holographic recordings of Nevine, which Koa also saw before going to sleep, with Mills able to see the hologram as perfectly life-like. Hours later, just before morning, Mills was awoken by the proximity alarms going off, finding that Koa appeared to be foaming at the mouth, and discovering that a small parasitic creature was in her mouth. He managed to get the creature out and wake Koa up, just before hearing what appeared to be growling coming from within the cave. The two backed away from the darkness deeper in the cave, only for a giant theropod outside the cave to try to break in. Mills fired at it, shooting out one of its eyes, before running deeper into the cave with Koa, the two falling to one of its lower levels. Using his scanner, Mills found an air current that led to an exit, but saw that the exit was a small crawlspace that was mostly blocked off. He began to break the rocks away with a shovel, but the larger rocks were too hard to break, making Mills despair upon seeing that he was out of tools. However, with Koa's encouragement, Mills struck inspiration to use the grenades to open the crawlspace, also showing Koa how to use the grenades and having her hold onto a few.
After blasting the crawlspace open, Mills had Koa go up first, following close behind her, but a rockslide separated the two, dumping Mills back in the cave. He quickly began searching for another way out, finding a different path, but then detected the presence of a human-sized cave-dwelling dinosaur. Turning on his scanner's proximity scanner, he discovered that the dinosaur was behind him, managing to avoid its attack, but it knocked his gun out of his hands. The dinosaur then jumped on him, but Mills repeatedly kicked it off while trying to get his gun, although he first managed to grab the scanner, emitting bright lights from it that blinded the reptile, allowing Mills to retrieve his weapon and kill it. He then found the new exit, his scanner showing that there was less than 12 hours until the meteor impact, and searched for Koa, finding her after hearing an explosion, which was the girl using the grenades to destroy a predator that was chasing her. Now together again, Mills and Koa made their way to the mountain, scaling it over the course of the day, reaching the location of the escape craft with only a short time left until the time of impact.
Mills entered the half of the ship that contained the escape craft, managing to get the power on, but Koa found that her family wasn't on the mountain, becoming angry with Mills for lying to her. Mills then took out a picture of Nevine and managed to tell Koa that Nevine had already died, opening up about how he lost her and wasn't there for her death, saying that he promised to protect Koa with his life and get her home. He then brought her into the ship, finding that his distress signal had been received and a rendezvous point had been set, boarding the escape craft with Koa. However, just before they could launch, small meteors flying ahead of the larger asteroid began hitting the surrounding area, with one striking the mountain and knocking the ship to the valley below, where its orientation prevented it from taking off. Stunned from the crash, Mills awoke to see two Tyrannosaurus Rex approaching the ship, trying to bite it open. Mills managed to get free of his restraints, jumping out of the escape craft to draw the dinosaurs away from Koa, which also made the dinosaurs drop the craft in a position that would allow it to take off, but found that his rifle was jammed. He managed to hide under some debris of the larger ship, where the dinosaurs closed in on him, but were then distracted by Koa managing to make a holographic projection of Nevine outside the craft. Encouraged, Mills fixed his gun and killed one of the dinosaurs, injuring the other and forcing it to flee. However, at that moment, the giant theropod he had injured at the cave appeared again, and Mills found that his gun was out of ammo, ordering Koa to take off while making a run for it.
The theropod chased Mills to a field of geysers, where Mills tried to get the creature struck by a geyser blast, which it narrowly avoided. Just as it closed in on Mills, Koa exited the ship and ran over, brandishing a sharp dinosaur bone coated with poisonous berries, and stabbed it into the theropod's still-intact eye, which made it fall on another geyser, killing the theropod with the blast. With the area being illuminated by the incoming asteroid, and a number of smaller meteors still pelting the area, Mills and Koa quickly got back into the escape craft, taking off just as the Chicxulub Impactor entered the atmosphere, striking the surface as the pair cleared the atmosphere, flying off to space. Exhausted, Mills slumped in his chair as Koa held his hand in reassurance, the two setting course to the rendezvous point to finally return home. Behind them, the dinosaurs were wiped out by the impact, and over the next 65 million years, the landscape and biosphere evolved, eventually reaching the time of modern man.
