Milos Novak (Czech: Miloš Novák), is a supporting protagonist and playable character in the 2021 video game Call of Duty: Vanguard, and a major character in the Vanguard comics.

He is a member of the National Liberation Army who was recruited into Task Force Vanguard by Carver Butcher, and participated in finding intelligence on the secret Nazi project "Phoenix". Despite being killed by Untersturmführer Hermann Freisinger, his death was avenged by his teammates as they stopped the general from forming his Fourth Reich.

Background[]

Milos Novak was born around the late 1800s to the early 1900s in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia of Central Europe to unnamed parents, and would bare witness to the Nazi Party invading his homeland. Wanting to free his country from fascism, Novak joined the Yugoslav Partisans (also known as the National Liberation Army) under the command of Josip Broz Tito. Novak became the army's most effective undercover agent, and was tasked to infiltrate the Wehrmacht in Serbia under the alias "Jan Zima". In 1944, Novak was approached by Carver Butcher, who informed Milos that he wanted him to find intel about a secret Nazi project called "Phoenix". Though reluctant at first due to being assigned to infiltrate the Nazis, Novak agreed once he eliminated the Nazi official that Butcher had knocked unconscious.

In April of 1945, Novak joined Task Force Vanguard, a special operations group formed by Butcher to find the intel with some of the war's best soldiers. Partnered with Polina Petrova, Lucas Riggs and Wade Jackson, Novak and the team met with Butcher, and told the others that they should move since the Nazis would find the corpse of one of their men. Carver then told them that they were awaiting for Arthur Kingsley, who would act as the team's leader, and his right-hand Richard Webb.

Call of Duty: Vanguard[]

Traveling to Hamburg, Germany, Novak and the team attempted to stealthily eliminate the Nazis onboard until several officers noticed the team's presence. Once dealing with the Nazis onboard, Kingsley informed Riggs, Polina and Jackson about their mission to find intel on the secret Nazi project. Afterward, Novak and the team battled their way to the German's U-boat to find "Phoenix", and Milos was tasked by Kingsley to use his safecracking skills to open the locked chest. Before he could do so, however, Novak and the team (excluding Jackson) were captured by the Nazis, and were taken to Gestapo head Hermann Freisinger. During the interrogation, Kingsley challenged Freisinger to kill him, but the general instead bludgeoned Novak with a chair as the others were imprisoned underneath the Gestapo headquarters.

Novak's death would be avenged by his teammates, who proceeded to kill Freisinger and learn that Project Phoenix was a coup by Hermann to usurp Adolf Hitler and form the Fourth Reich. Novak's wish to see the end of fascism was done once the Allied Powers defeated the Axis Powers, thus ending the war.

He is the only member of the team to not have his past explored in-game, as it's explained in the third issue of the Vanguard comics.

Novak is referred to as the "bohunk" by Wade Jackson, which is an offensive term used to speak of people from Central or Southeastern Europe.
