“ | It is obvious why Aleister Crowley constructed me within his own palace. And you already know the answer, don’t you? | „ |

“ | As for why he chose me over Mathers or Westcott, I can only assume he viewed me as relatively reasonable and sensible. I can guess he decided that making me the host would allow him to assemble the more difficult people such as Waite and Regardie. | „ |

“ | I doubt I could slay Coronzon as Mina Mathers. Pulling Westcott or Mathers from the archives would change nothing. But what I can do is think nothing of victory and instead focus on buying enough time for us to reach the atmosphere. I cannot allow such an ugly monster to climb through that hole. No matter what. My true name is Reading Thoth 78. No matter how overblown and ridiculous a fairy tale it might be, I am a device that lends my intellect to my administrator to find the most realistic path to success, so I will fulfill that role to the very, very end. That human can overcome any success or failure, so I only need to ensure that he has even a 1% chance of someday achieving domination. That is the primary purpose for which I was brought into this world. | „ |
~ Mina Mathers (Reading Thoth 78) to Coronzon |
'Mina Mathers (Reading Thoth 78) is a major supporting character in the A Certain Magical Index: New Testament franchise.
She was a magician from the Golden Dawn and the wife of its founder, after her death she was accidentally produced by Aleister Crowley when he incorporated with the Thoth Tarot into Reading Thoth 78. She is a thought entity and an AI a parallel processing device in the Windowless Building and created an original grimoire. The AI takes on the appearance of Mina Mathers and has claimed it can take on the appearance of any Golden Dawn members including Aleister's wife, Rose. She was given the reproduced identity and role to remind Aleister Crowley of his trauma.
She is voiced by Saito Chiwa in Japanese.
Appearance[]
Mina Mathers appears as a young woman, wearing black risqué mourning clothing which exposes her legs and her large breasts. She has long white hair which is covered by her mourning veil. She also has black cat ears and a tail.
Personality[]
The AI that takes on Mina Mathers has shown aspects of her personality when she was alive, such as Mina's love for the Golden Dawn and didn't regret her days when she was alive. Though she showed signs of jealousy for certain adorned figures who tended to forget they were protected by the state and the people's taxes. The recreated Mina also claimed to be truly jealous for the modern society and it's civilized definition of sexual harassment.
When first appearing in front of Touma, Mina likes to explain things a lot which led Touma to believe if she was lonely, she was sullen after giving him a thorough explanation only to be told that she didn't explain anything. Though Mina conducted herself in a reasonable mature manner, frequently acting as a mediator when her husband and Westcott got into childish arguments, she also displayed a witch-like tendency to tempt, tease and lead astray, to Touma's mild misfortune. She also showed little love for her husband, although when Aleister released the recreated Golden Dawn magicians, she showed a slight concern over him disappearing.
Mina is shown to be a caring individual, as seen when she cared for Aleister daughter, Lilith for the majority of the series even when Aleister was fighting Coronzon. After being freed from the Windowless Building by Aiwass, Mina can now move freely. She encounters Accelerator various times, but she doesn't want to fight him showing more concern over Lilith.
Mina is rarely seen in angry state, if anything she is always calm and collected hardly showing any emotions of anger, the only time she was angered is when Dion did when she was alive. Mina responded by attacking Dion with phantom black cats traumatizing Dion for the rest of her live.
Biography[]
The original Mina's past isn't fully known however she was a painter who married Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, a co-founder of the Golden Dawn, and was a member of the cabal herself. Mina's artistic skill gave form to the uncertain inspiration held by the Golden Dawn's magicians and played a key role in the creation of the cabal's ceremonial tools. She also often acted as a mediator to settle things when some of the eccentric members of the cabal, including her husband and Westcott, got into fruitless debates. Prioritizing the goal of the cabal's magical research like the other magicians, there were days where Mina had to beg her friend Annie for living expenses. At some point during the downfall of the Golden Dawn, Mina was among the many magicians struck down by Aleister Crowley, doomed to either die or live a cursed life devoid of all possibilities for success.
Later, Mina's identity was recreated by the Reading Thoth 78 and given to the thought entity and grimoire born within the parallel processing device, to remind Aleister Crowley of his trauma.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Palette Knife: Mina is skilled at art, she uses a small palette knife which draws a rainbow line through space. These are the ultimate source that drew, colored and constructed the many cards and ceremonial tools used by the Golden Dawn. Because of this, she has been compared to Prometheus, who gave fire to humanity.
- Phantom Black Cats: Mina can conjure black cats and influence intentionally and unintentionally, leading to a large number gathering at her feet like a shadow, when she attacked Dion Fortune home she used a swarm of phantom black cats the size of tigers which sliced Fortune back using their claws.
- Absorbtion: As an AI, Mina can absorb the power from her surroundings and ley lines enabling her to automatically use magic for self-defense, despite being unable to refine magic power as a living being can.
- Curse manipulation: Mina is capable of planting curses as shown when she planted a curse on Coronzon's hair.
- Aeon Card: The Thoth Tarot is an alternative sorting derived from the official Golden Dawn model and it contains the essence of Holy Guardian Angel Aiwass within it. The 20th card of the Major Arcana is named the Aeon. That card originally symbolized the final judgment, but Aleister changed the arcana because he decided that judgment had already occurred when he contacted Aiwass in 1904. This link to Aiwass allows the Thoth Tarot to draw and wield its powers if Aiwass is summoned.
- Selective Invisibility: Mina can selectively choose who could see her, and disappear then reappear at will, though due to her influence over cats, they would be able to sense her. This is shown during Kamijou's journey in the Windowless Building.
- Event Recreation: Mina has been recreated to remind Aleister of his past sins and trauma and as such she can show others his past. Almost as if they are delving into Aleister memories and experiencing them into their own.
- Secrets of the Black Cat Ritual: Is an original grimoire derived from the Thoth Tarot, created by Aiwass through Mina's hand to act as a vessel to support her existence outside of the Windowless Building, freeing her from the bounds of the several dozen ton processing device. Aiwass compared the transfer to transferring a candle flame to a new candle when the first had nearly burned down. The grimoire itself is a thick book with leaf pages bound by metal rings. Originally a cheap collection of ordinary loose leaf papers, the pages are filled with characters and symbols, and as with any grimoire, overturn normal physical laws, repelling rain drops as though they were made of plastic. As a grimoire, it holds a toxin which affects those who read it. Though it is normally a poison, following her understanding of her existence as similar to seemingly insignificant garbage data that wasn't deleted, with the potential to become a bug which can lock up a program, Mina was able to utilize it in a different manner to save Index from Coronzon's control, having the toxin burn though the pathways of her mind and fry out the John's Pen Mode controller, the poison acting as a kind of medicine in this case much like flipping a Thoth card upside down. While using this grimoire as a vessel for her mind, Mina Mathers possesses a physical body, supported and bound by earthly forces such as air and gravity. Mina retains the calculating capabilities of a true processing device in this state, being capable of calculating and executing movements which allow her to bypass Accelerator's redirection and strike him, as well as predicting and dodging his attacks. This body is apparently less energy efficient than her previous one, experiencing hunger and requiring food much like any other biological body.
Abilities[]
Superb Intellect: As an AI she has an extremely high level of intellect and a grimoire created by Aleister Crowley, should have superior calculation abilities to its book form, it's a grimoire originally created by Aleister Crowley and adapted by Aiwass, its calculation abilities apparently surpass those of Post-Headshot Accelerator.
She is also capable of reading thoughts to a certain degree, though it isn't known if the original could.
