Synopsis for the number five-ranked Pro Hero Mirko from My Hero Academia.

History[]

Bunny-Eared Usako Manga

Rumi as "Bunny-Eared Usako" during her middle school years.

Rumi Usagiyama was a Japanese girl living in Hiroshima who was born into a superhuman society where eighty percent of the world's population had superpowers referred to as quirks. In order to ensure that the abuse of said powers would not cause society to crumble, the governments of the world including Japan passed a law that made it illegal to use quirks in public. There was however an exception to this rule professional heroes. Heroes were individuals who protected society from evil-doers known as villains and as such were able to freely use their quirks in pursuit of justice upon obtaining a hero license. Usagiyama's powerful quirk, called "Rabbit," gave her the powers of a rabbit such as superhuman senses and extremely strong legs.

As a teenager, Rumi found no small amount of exhilaration from fighting people with her deadly kicks. During her middle school years, she earned a reputation for entering various fight clubs in Hiroshima uninvited and battling the competitors. Among fans of fighting, she was known as the legendary schoolgirl hooligan "Bunny-Eared Usako." Eventually, her unauthorized activity led to her being taken into custody and the name of her school coming to light. The school, presumably wanting to avoid taking responsibility for Rumi's actions, had her expelled. After that event, Usagiyama stopped crashing fight clubs and it appeared as though Bunny-Eared Usako had simply vanished. Rumi later enrolled in a hero school in Hiroshima, hoping to earn a hero license and become a professional hero. Her friends in the school referred to her affectionally as "Ru-ko."

The Underground Masquerade[]

Rumi finds the Underground Masquerade Manga

Rumi Usagiyama finds the origin of the scent of a battle.

At some point during her school career, Rumi and her friends went on a school trip to Osaka. During their stay, the girls got lost in the bustling streets of the city and asked a young professional hero known as Fat Gum for directions. The hero obliged their request, however before the girls could get moving again, Usagiyama smelt blood and sweat in the air, realizing a fight was going on somewhere nearby. Excited by the scent of her favorite activity, Usagiyama left her friends behind without warning and began bounding through the city towards the commotion. At last she came across a building reminiscent of a parking lot that served as the origin of the smell. With a broad smile on her face, Rumi eagerly anticipated the fight she was about to have.

Entering into the building, Rumi was pleased to discover that her nose hadn't lied to her, as the structure was secretly serving as an illegal cage fighting ring known as the Underground Masquerade. Having learned from her previous problems, Usagiyama stole a tiger mask from an audience member before heading into the center stage so that her identity wouldn't be recognised. The announcer instantly heralded the surprise arrival of the school girl who introduced herself as the Masked Mystery Beauty "Tiger Bunny." The audience didn't take too kindly to Rumi's bravado, bombarding her with questions about her identity. In fact, one spectator quickly recognised Rumi as Bunny-Eared Usako thanks to her ears, causing the hero student to frantically deny his claims.

Fighters descend upon Tiger Bunny Manga

The "Tiger Bunny" battling the whole Underground Masquerade in a cage.

Tossing aside the subject of her identity, Usagiyama boldly declared her intention to fight, a statement that earned her the ire of the two fighters already fighting in the ring Metro Nanba Crusher & Umeda Siberian. After briefly lecturing her on etiquette, the two fighters leapt at Usagiyama with murderous intent, only to be knocked unconscious with a single kick each. Turning her attention outside of the ring, Rumi beckoned at the members of the crowd and any other fighters present to all attack her simultaneously. Surprisingly the spectators obliged her request, clambering one by one into the ring with the combined intention to take down the Tiger Bunny.

Hardened powerhouses, sadists hoping to inflict pain, even members of the facility's staff, all came after the Masked Mystery Beauty with impressive combative skills and quirks. Yet nobody could touch Rumi, whose powerful kicks were like lethal weapons cutting down her foes one after another as she stood atop the cage. However, the fight was soon interrupted by a gas flowing onto the surface of the room that began boosting the quirks of the crowd and turning them into rampaging monsters. As Usagiyama watched on from the relative safety of the high ground, a second gas, this one black, began appearing out of mid-air in concentrated amounts. The moment the black mist appeared behind someone, a hand emerged and drained the quirk from the target.

O'Clock saves Rumi from AFO Manga

Rumi is saved from the quirk-stealing mist by O'Clock.

The black mist appeared behind the oblivious Rumi, however before the hand of the culprit could steal her quirk a man grabbed her by the waist and carried her into a safe corner of the room where another burlier man (who was one of the fighters) was waiting. The burlier man, who went by the Rapper, asked his partner why he had saved the girl, a question Usagiyama herself wanted answered. The man revealed that he was actually the High-Speed Hero: O'Clock undercover and that he sought to enlist the aid of the Rapper and the Tiger Bunny. O'Clock assured Rumi that he would straighten things out with her school, although she continued to deny she was a hero candidate.

The Rapper was understandably baffled that someone as ruff and chaotic as Rumi was a hero candidate, and the pair of fighters soon got into an argument about whether kicking or punching was better. O'Clock ignored the pair's insipid argument and informed them that their mission would be to escape the Underground Masquerade and make contact with the police that were lying in wait outside. Using his superspeed quirk to steal gas masks for the three of them, O'Clock asked the two brawlers to act as bait for him as he moved for the exit. Rumi and the Rapper easily cut a path through the crazed fighters and would've had an easy time of it if a man wearing a hoodie hadn't appeared.

The hooded figure easily avoided all of the Rapper's fast-paced punches and delivered a powerful blow to the fighter's head, knocking him backwards. Usagiyama saw what had happened to her combat partner and tried to land a kick on the man, only to also get stunned by a knee to the face that knocked her mask off. The hooded man proceeded to stretch his arm to a superhuman level in his attempt to grab the stunned Rumi. However, O'Clock stepped in his path and used a knife to slice up the figure's arm. To the astonishment of the Rapper and Rumi, the hooded man's arm swiftly regenerated, a sign that he had multiple quirks.

Recognizing that the danger they were facing was a potent threat of an unknowable level, Usagiyama, Rapper and O'Clock opted to fall back onto their plan B. In the event that the trio faced an opponent they didn't know how to deal with, Rumi was supposed to flee outside to inform the police that they should call in the number one unbeatable hero: All Might. As the Rapper and O'Clock distracted the hooded figure, Rumi darted through the chaotic crowd with incredible swiftness, making her way to the exit. The hooded man tried to reach her by elongating his own arm, although Usagiyama avoided the attack and burst through the exit into the light of day. To a detective named Tanuma, Rumi relayed the High-Speed Hero's message with a broad smile on her face.

Bombing of the Sky Egg[]

Heroines pageant Manga

Mirko and other heroines participating in a beauty pageant.

Sometime after the Underground Masquerade incident, Rumi graduated from her hero school and became a professional hero known as the Rabbit Hero: Mirko. She was somewhat of an unorthodox heroine who moved around Japan protecting people where she could rather than taking up a base of operations. She didn't have sidekicks or a proper hero agency and it was rare for her to team-up with someone. Nevertheless, Mirko became a well-respected hero renowned for her strength and beauty. Around four years after the Masquerade Incident, Mirko was one of many professional heroes invited to attend the going-away party of the Playboy Hero: Captain Celebrity.

Captain Celebrity was a top-ranking American hero who had recently been making a name for himself in Japan, however having decided to go back to America, a large party was being held at the Sky Egg in Tokyo for him. During the party hosted in front of fifty thousand people, Mirko participated in a beauty pageant alongside the Dragoon Hero: Ryukyu, the R-Rated Hero: Midnight, and the Snake Hero: Uwabami where the Fiber Hero: Best Jeanist used his quirk to wrap the women in cloth. Suddenly, the party was interrupted by the sound of a large earthquake outside. The audience members began to panic, a sentiment that was worsened by the building suddenly losing all power. The heroes moved into a private room where they began to discuss the situation. Best Jeanist explained that the earthquake was likely an explosion caused by some sort of malevolent threat, and that for the time being everyone was locked in the tower.

Mirko, Ryukyu, Snipe vs. bomber Manga

Mirko, Ryukyu, and Snipe battling one of the airborne bombers.

To deal with the situation, Best Jeanist advised that the heroes work together to keep the civilians safe and stop whatever threat assailed them. Although Mirko was reluctant to work in a team, she and the other heroes agreed. Alongside Ryukyu, Mirko smashed her way out of the tower to confront the villainous threat outside. To their astonishment, Captain Celebrity was already outside holding up the tower after it had sustained heavy damage from the bombing. The culprits were equally surprising, as they were a group of large biologically-engineered monsters capable of flight and self-detonation. With Ryukyu and and the hero Snipe by her side, Mirko set about defeating and hogtying the airborne menaces while other heroes moved into help Celebrity stabilize the tower.

Although the heroes were successful in stabilizing the tower, a single bomber escaped and detonated itself, causing the building to topple. Before the Sky Egg could plummet onto the streets below, killing untold thousands, the number one hero of Japan All Might made his arrival and caught the Egg, averting the crisis. As relief aid began to arrive, the corpses of the bombers suddenly merged into one with the intent to self-detonate and kill everyone present. Once again, All Might stepped into action and destroyed the amalgamation before it could make its move, ending the threat of the bombers once and for all.

Japanese Hero Billboard Charts[]

If anyone is out there scheming right now, you best be prepared for me to send you flying!
~ Mirko's broadcasted warning to criminals.

Around three to five years later, a villainous organization known as the League of Villains became prominent in Japan. By making several moves against the most prestigious hero school U.A. High and the Symbol of Peace All Might himself, the League was able to decrease society's strong faith in heroes as their deeds continuously went unpunished. To make matters worst, the life story and ideology of a villain named Stain became fairly popular after his arrest, further stirring civil unrest. Perhaps the most significant event around this time was All Might's early retirement after a particularly brutal battle with the legendary villain All For One.

Around this time, the Hero Public Safety Commission that managed professional heroes informed Mirko that she would be the next number five-ranked hero and by extension the top female hero in Japan. Along with the other top ten heroes of Japan, Mirko attended the Japanese Hero Billboard Charts where the rankings were made public and each of the ten heroes would say some words in an attempt to sooth the public's unrest. As the fifth-ranked hero, Mirko walked onto the stage when the announcer called her name. As she did so, Rumi insulted the number four-ranked hero Edgeshot for recently joining a team, a choice she perceived as weakness. Edgeshot took no insult from Mirko's comment, instead choosing to remind her that she should watch her words in public.

The announcer then went to each of the ten and asked them for a comment. When it was her turn, Mirko stated that any criminals scheming should be prepared to face her wrath. Edgeshot's comment was cut off by the number two-ranked hero Hawks, who controversially spoke his belief that everything being said was superficial. Mirko expressed her admiration towards Hawks's bravado, as always speaking their mind was a trait she respected in a person. Hawks went on to make a long-winded and brutally honest speech about the state of hero society which was followed up by a brief comment from the new number one-ranked hero Endeavor.

Monster in Kyushu[]

The day after the Japanese Hero Billboard Charts, an exceptionally powerful Nomu attacked the city Fukuoka in the Kyushu region. Nomus were artificially-modified humans created by the League of Villains that had multiple powerful quirks and usually lacked the ability to communicate or exhibit advanced thought processes. However, the Nomu in Kyushu demonstrated intelligence and was far more powerful than any other Nomu that had terrorized society. The number one and two heroes Endeavor and Hawks fought the Nomu but were being overwhelmed by the menace.

Mirko arrives to fight Dabi Manga

Mirko bounding onto the battlefield to support Endeavor and Hawks.

After seeing the horror unfolding on tv, Mirko rushed over to the scene. Unbeknownst to Mirko, the Nomu was the hooded figure she had fought in the Underground Masquerade years prior, albeit further modified and more powerful. By the time Mirko had made her way to the battleground, the Nomu had already been killed by Endeavor, although both him and Hawks had been badly wounded in the process. In the aftermath, the League of Villains member Dabi who had orchestrated the attack appeared and surrounded the two weakened heroes using his fire quirk.

Before Dabi could kill the wounded men, Mirko bounded onto the battlefield, creating a powerful shockwave with her landing that dispersed Dabi's flames. Mirko, standing between Dabi and his prey, threatened the Villain with a smile on her face. Knowing he was outmatched, Dabi called for an extraction after which he began disappearing in a grey sludge that appeared out of thin air. Mirko tried to stop him before he could disperse but retracted when she discovered the grey sludge was harmful to the touch. With the immediate threats over, the citizens began celebrating victory.

Raid on the Paranormal Liberation Front[]

Pro heroes assemble to arrest Garaki Manga

Mirko and the Pro Heroes preparing to storm Jaku General Hospital.

Months later, a massive task force of Pro Heroes was coalesced to take down the Paranormal Liberation Front. The PLF was a gigantic criminal force led by Tomura Shigaraki that combined the might of the League of Villains and the Meta Liberation Army and sported a paramilitary of over a hundred thousand quirk-possessing warriors. Hawks and the authorities had managed to pinpoint two major locations run by the Front the Gunga Mountain Villa and the Jaku General Hospital. The villa was the PLF's primary base where a majority of its leadership was stationed.

The hospital was the base of Dr. Kyudai Garaki, the mad scientist responsible for the creation of the Nomus who was improving upon Shigaraki's body in the building. Almost all of Japan's Pro Heroes were brought together in secret to launch a joint raid on the two locations. Mirko stormed the hospital as part of the gigantic team led by Endeavor. While the other heroes dealt with evacuating the hospital and securing Garaki who wasn't able to put up a fight, Mirko burst through the morgue of the hospital and continued further in to find and apprehend Shigaraki himself.

High-End Nomu awaken Manga

Five incomplete High-End Nomus attacking the Rabbit Hero.

She quickly encountered a horde of Nomu blocking her path which she darted through, attacking them with her powerful quirk along the way. Mirko reached a large metal door that she burst through with ease, discovering a lab filled with developing Nomus with Garaki at its center (the Doctor at the entrance had been a double). Mirko's destructive entrance destroyed parts of the lab, upsetting the doctor. The Rabbit Hero reported her findings to the Heroes still located in the lobby, although they were also dealing with an outbreak of Nomu that prevented them from assisting her for the time being.

Mirko leapt at the doctor with a kick which was blocked by a miniature Nomu that took the blow for its creator. Although the creature was destroyed by the kick, it gave Garaki the chance to release the powerful Nomus trapped inside the test tubes. The Nomus instantly leapt at Mirko, striking her with enough force to send her crashing into an upper section of the laboratory. Although wounded by the attack, Mirko used her ears to pinpoint Garaki who had retreated further into the lab. With a powerful thrust, Mirko jumps past the powerful Nomus with the intent of following the doctor.

Mirko using Luna Ring on Nomus Manga

Mirko fending off the Nomu with one of her Super Moves.

However, she was intercepted by the Nomus who began attacking her with their multiple quirks. Rumi fought impressively against the creatures, unleashing numerous attacks and Super Moves that devastated her opponents. Even after having her left forearm ripped off by a Nomu's telekinetic quirk, Mirko continued to fight, using a Super Move to kill the Nomu that took her arm from her. She took a small breather to tie her arm up using strands of her own ripped-out hair. With a smile on her face, Mirko declared that she would defeat the Nomus, as her story would not end at the hands of zombies.

As Mirko and the Nomus continued to fight, the Rabbit Hero noticed that they were growing more powerful as she was slowly failing to land attacks. Realizing the brawl was futile, Mirko opted to speed away from the battle in pursuit of the doctor. Although the Nomus provided her with wounds to her abdomen, head, and legs as they chased after her, Mirko was able to reach Garaki who was tending to a life-support tank that housed the unconscious Shigaraki. The second she saw Shigaraki, Mirko's instincts told her he was a dangerous man without compare who should never be allowed to wake up.

Mirko badly wounded Manga

Mirko badly wounded in the aftermath of her fight against the Nomus.

Mirko used a Super Move to shatter the life-support tank, causing damage to the facility. It was then that a Nomu pulled her back through the lab, tossing her into Endeavour who was amongst the Heroes that had now caught up to Mirko. The Rabbit Hero informed her comrades that Shigaraki was in the next room and they couldn't let him awaken. The gravely wounded Mirko rested on the ground barely clinging to life. Endeavor took the time to cauterize her wounds using his "Hellflame" quirk, citing her aid in Kyushu and her efforts in the lab as reasons why he couldn't let her die.

Unfortunately Shigaraki was able to awaken despite the efforts of the Heroes. He activated his quirk "Decay" that began disintegrating the hospital and anyone still inside. The unconscious Mirko was carried to safety alongside another hero by Endeavor, making her one of the few Heroes to survive the sudden attack. After entrusting Mirko's wounded body to a heroine, Endeavor and several other Heroes launched a desperate counterattack against Shigaraki. The heroine carried the Rabbit Hero to safety where she was tended to by medics and placed on emergency life-support.
