Misao Makimachi is a supporting protagonist in Rurouni Kenshin.
Biography[]
Misao was walking with Koaru and Yahiko when they notice how dark it was getting. Misao explains to Koaru that where therey are headed should be where "Gramps" directed them according to Misao. However, the three find that Kenshin left before their arrival. Misao promptly asks the old man where Kenshin went for Kaoru's sake. The old man explained that they need to be careful as he went 'o see Niitsu who reportedly a potter with a deluge of orders.
Niitsu's hidden name happens to be Hiko Seijuurou who is the one teaching at the Hiten Mitsurugi School which was founded by a person of the same name and passed it down through the generations to be inherited by those who entirely mastered it in will and style to pass it on. Misao then comes to the conclusion that Kenshin did not master the style completely as there was a technique he never got to learn in order to be stronger. Misao takes the two to the school and they head in where they were noticed by Kenshin and the man in charge of the training.
During chapter 86, Misao is in a discussion with Yahiko and Kaoru about Shinomori Aoshi whom Kaoru knew as the Okashira of the Oniwanshu who was seen in a crowd by Yahiko in Kyoto. Yahiko grabs his stick and asks Koaru to back away as Misao knows the Oniwanbanshu. He then asks if Misao wanted to help Aoshi or avenge him and his fellows. Misao asks him on why he wanted to know between Aoshi and Kenshin along with what happened to the rest of the Oniwabanshu. Koaru forces them both to calm down so that Misao can explain all she knew.
It was because of "her" that she met Kenshin again recently and that she should repay Kaoru. Misao also explains that she did not see what had been going on and never knew Aoshi directly. What Koaru will be hearing will be a hard thing to hear for her. As the the plans for the Great Kyoto Fire are being planned, Misao starts looking for people who protected Kyoto a long while ago. She also was pondering about the price of a Gatling gun on the black market when Kaoru and Omasu overheard her.
Misao then admits that while they do need to be equipped for this pending arson, firearms such as the Gatling gun might not be a good idea to be relied on. Koaru explains that foru of the Oniwabanshuu were gunned down by it. Just then, Yahiko arrives with several of Misao's friends and a letter from the police. Misao comes to the conclusion they must stop the people planning to carry out the Kyoto fire and send carrier pigeons to warn the people of Kyoto of the impending fire and has Shiroojou, Masukami, Kurjou, and Oumine change into their battle attires.
Maoru explains to Yahiko that they will help out with the situation as well. After her friends dressed up for battle, Misao praises on a group of people taking out a couple men but explains that they need their guard up as the situation is still dangerous and they all must get back to their posts to protect the people from being burned. After everyone moved out as told, she tells Kaoru and Yahiko that they are now up for their current duty. Just then, Misao was confronted by Usui Uonuma, a man who killed 50 people in one night some time ago, who intends to have her killed like the people in the planned fire.
However, she survives this attempt on her life and later angrily approaches Kenshin and Kaoru about how Usui managed to sneak up on her as it embarrassed her. What's worse, Okashira Shinomori Aoshi joined Shishio out of a vow to kill Kenshin. Misao angrilly declares that Okashira has to be stopped. Later on, one of Misao's comrades alerts her friends that they have been surrounded by 150 men as Kenshin warned. Koaru insisted they fight to defend, not kill the enemy. Misao ensures that no one will die as long as she is Okashira.
However, "Iwanbō" manages to beat down her team in front of her, but "Gramps" told her not to break formation and wait for the police. Just then, another member of Shishio's group appears and asks her if they will really make it. Koaru warns her that her opponent is just trying to rile her up. Misao explains that she will take down the scythe-wielder who turned out to be a guy. Kaoru restrains her to prevent her from trying to kill him. Just then, Yahiko shows up to help Misao deal with the dissident. Once the tables turned, Misao tells Kaoru to deal with the aggressor, Kamatari after he got disarmed of his scythe. When Kama tries to kill himself upon defeat, Misao incapacitates him before he could penetrate his throat with a needle.
Soon after, they witness "Iwanbō" retreat. Later on, Yahiko and Misao find themselves trying to locate Enishi's hideout to at least find a clue on Kaoru's whereabouts with Misao asking Yahiko not to talk about the size of Arakawa as it makes the place sound bigger, same goes for the late summer heat. Misao acknowledges they could ask a question and check out suspicious responses.
Yahiko suggests that they head for home, but Misao complains that it would be so long and Aoshi is always gone when they get back. He tells her she is not a little kid and has to put up with it much to her annoyance. Soon, they were met by Oibore his weekly begging grounds. When Misao asks him about dinner, he asks if Yahiko wanted sword practice which leads to Yahiko realizing he was a samurai who was his son and daughter. Misao suggests he sees her as a daughter, but he declined as his daughter was much prettier which triggers her anger. After they part ways with the old man, she calls him a bum who should not come back.
