Misha Belenkoff (Russian: Миша Беленков) is the Russian janitor and the central protagonist of the 1998 film Paulie.

He was portrayed by Tony Shalhoub, who also voiced Splinter in the 2014 live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and its 2016 sequel Out of the Shadows.

History[]

Misha Belenkoff is a Russian Immigrant and former teacher of literature, lives in America and works as a janitor at an animal testing lab. At the lab, Belenkoff encounters Paulie and is shocked to see Paulie speaking fluent English. Subsequently, Paulie does not speak a word when Belenkoff brings others to witness the talking bird. Wishing for someone to talk to, Paulie explains his story on how he first met his owner Marie up to his current status at the institute. Misha explains to Paulie that before he came to America, he met a girl in college and they became friends over books they read. One time working backstage at a school play he saw the girl perform onstage and was shocked by her beauty and wanted to tell her how he felt. But whenever he tried to confess his feelings to her, he couldn't. The girl ended up marrying Misha's best friend and she said to him that she always liked Misha, but she was afraid of his silence. After hearing Paulie's story, Misha broke Paulie out of his cage and tried to find information about Marie to no avail. But then realizing he had the info about her from when he used the paper as a shopping list, Misha called her saying she found Paulie. When Dr. Reingold tried take Paulie back, Misha quits his job and escapes with Paulie. Arriving at Marie's house, it took a moment to realize that Marie had grown up and Paulie was reunited with his owner. As Misha was about to leave, Paulie reminded him to not be afraid to speak up and Misha goes inside with the two to talk about Paulie's story.
